"PARADISE CITY" guns n' roses

 COMING SOON!

Painesville residents, expect a 5% increase in your sewer  bill . I believe this will be on Mondays agenda. What the Heck it's only what another dollar a month. The real question to ask when did the city know about this 2008? and wait until now to raise it?

Grumpy here.

Recently a comment was made on "COUNCIL MEETING 10/06/14"

Still not one mentioned of the Halloween finger pointing. Don't agree? PC changed the date to Thursday. Facebook followers were angry (100 or so) So it was changed to Saturday. The paper residents received   got blamed for this when it was not even their fault.
Its very simple: Fill in the blanks with something positive.

A challenge to all of us! Something Positive about Painesville.  Nothing about the past or future but the present. That's why they call it a present.

As far as Halloween, the kids will get their candy, Some will go out on Thursday, some on Friday and some on Saturday. Some going on all three days, all will be able to claim ignorance.,

I am game so let's give it a try.

1. There are some citizens who really care about the City and the direction it is going. (BTW, the includes Term in spite of what you might think)

2. The Fire dept seems to be pretty good.

3. We have lots of park property which seems to get used positively. The anchor park is Kiwanis Park which many communities would love to have.

4. We have a couple of outstanding bakeries.

5. We seem to have a good electric distribution system even though we don't produce any power.

Homework from the blog…… This is much like my teacher asking me at Thanksgiving what I am thankful for. Ok I will play.

1. My neighborhood.
2. A city that pretty much leaves me alone if I pay my taxes.
3. Morley Library
4. It's really quick to drive through, even with construction.
5. It's a diverse community but nobody really talks to each other.

This was really hard. Please ask me for a list of things I would change. For those who are really happy here you need to go visit other places.

I prefer locally owned and operated restaurants [as opposed to fast food franchised food]. In the past month, I've eaten at Jimmy's, Flavor around the Square, Sidewalk Cafe, Local Fish House and Rider's Inn. I'm grateful for the positive impact those 5 business have on Painesville.

I was told by a City employee that originally the City Manager moved Trick or Treat to Thursday because he didn't want to compete with Friday night football. The Harvey Red Raiders are travelling to Orange High School on October 31. Like Term says "you can't make this stuff up".

Some good points, but I'm looking for things that are enticing for people to buy a home and live here.

Am I the only one seeing this? People are putting money into their houses in Painesville and staying put.

Five positives about Painesville:

1. Morley Library (especially now that they've finally addressed the problem with the homeless and assorted riffraff congregating on the first floor, as well as too many items being stolen)

2. Affordable housing (why much of it is affordable is a different topic, but, still...)

3. Locally-owned businesses that are competent at what they do (based on my personal experience, this includes Federico Tire, Bella Donna Salon, Model Bakery and Joughin Hardware)

4. Beaty Landing and Recreation Park.

5. The utility department is usually very good at promptly addressing issues such as power outages. Of course, it could be because they sometimes get a lot of practice.

1. Harvey Red Raiders (your father would agree)
2. Yes and the many great students in our schools - debate team, band, chorus, etc.
3. the many neighborhood parks, our square, Rec. Park, and the new area where Millstone was - I've been watching and it looks great.
4. Lake Erie College and it's students
5. Joughins Hardware
6. Home of STP Products
7. The many beautiful churches
8. Morley Library
9. All the events we have on the square seems we have one or two a month plus the weekly car cruise.
10. All the volunteers, businesses, and city that make these events happen.
11. the Historic buildings
12. the Central YMCA
13. the Grand River
I could go on this took me about a minute and a half.
Term no not all is rosie but not everythin is a thorn. My glass is about 3/4 full. Yours seems pretty empty.
14. Oh that reminds me..Your vine or Mine, Namath's, Bestro 70, El Senior, FATS, 5 Star, Jimmeys...

Well done, the positive side to life. All too many times people are quick to find fault. Historical footnote, at the former city managers' staff meetings all dept. heads were required to report on good news only from their depts., the rest could come under general dept. updates. This was not a popular theme, as people struggled with it. Many leaving their offices with, "give me something positive".

6:04 Interesting comment, makes me understand the working and failures of the past administration. Bring me only "good" news! With leadership like this it's no wonder this city is in the shape it is. You have to wonder if this kind of thinking that made resident's, companies, even a hospital to leave? It will take Painesville decades to recover from all the past mistakes.
3:59 you should check your glass as well as mine.
5:39 Sneaky, positive? with a spin. Interesting.

Bring you good news? A while I challenged YOU, TERM to not be so negative and put up 5 positive things about Painesville. You did not, you put it on your blog (like it was your idea) for others to do. Well done bloggers. Term you get an F as you did not listen to and follow directions :@ Great comments Painesville residents! See, I knew Term could NOT find anything positive, you proved my point.

A young couple bought a house on my street near Lake Erie College. They told me they wanted an older century home. They looked at houses in Mentor, Chardon and Concord but the cost was out of reach. Their dollar went further in Painesville City. I asked if they were concerned about the schools and they told me they plan to send their 2 children to Our Shepard school. Their 5 positives; Century home. Affordable. near private school. near LEC. and near YMCA.

Leadership is a concept, the actual results of any organizations' policies is with the administration of this concept. This is shown by Congress, Republican or Democrat, and then the 'administration' of those policies. So, it starts with council to set policy, communicated to the 'implementers' through a manager. City Council needs to think through this concept. Legislation is the result of policy. But who is really setting it? Maybe time for council to re-think council agendas and discuss publicly with the administrators, not just a 'presentation' from a dept., but actual discussion. Just a thought.

At October 15, 2014 at 10:00 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

9:31 Do you think we will ever get a council that will do that?
We all know who set policy here for the past 20 years.
9:17 That's the best reasons so far.
7:20 what is "IT"?
3:59 Thank you for your service. I was under the impression many doctors left when the hospital did.
3:24 Interesting question

3:08 I have more than five reasons to be positive on Painesville.
2:27 Wouldn't it been nice that instead of demolishing Lake East it would have been turned into a VA Clinic and local emergency room? We would even had room for VA nursing care. Jobs? Shortsighted?
Local problems with a Senior Center? We could have saved State St. School for Head Start and turned Cedarbrook School into a one floor Senior Center. Seems someone was in an awful hurry to bring all those schools down.

Also those aren't your father's Red Raiders.

3:24,

What I have been told was that the director of Morley Library met with officials from St. James Episcopal Church, Project Hope, and another agency who works with the homeless (I wasn't given the name) regarding ongoing issues with the homeless, both within the library and outside its main doors. The director told them that the library was instituting a tougher policy regarding loitering, or otherwise not using the library for its intended purpose. She also provided them printed copies of the new policy, to pass along to their clients. I don't know the specifics of the new policy, except that those who aren't using the library for its intended purpose will be asked once to either do so, or leave. If there is no compliance, library personnel are supposed to call the police. Also, St. James agreed to change the entrance for the free meals that they serve to the homeless; the previous entrance was across Phelps Street from the library's main entrance, so many waited for the meal inside the library, or gathered in front of the library's entrance. This "get tougher" policy was enacted by the board of directors of Morley, in response to a survey conducted by the library on its website not quite a year ago. Most of the negative comments concerned those not using the library for its intended purpose, or those who gathered outside its main entrance, many of whom were smoking cigarettes (and other substances). As for stolen material, there are now security cameras in place at the library, as well as a sensor alarm system by the front entrance. This was especially overdue; from a source at the library, I was told that there have been over 3500 DVDs stolen since the new library opened in 2004. A cynic might say that these measures were put in place in time to sway voters to pass the library's renewal levy next month, but whatever the motivation, they have been long overdue.

Five positive things....... I am at a loss. Our house is so devalued, it worth what we paid for it when bought it 20 years ago even though we did major upgrades.. We have decided to leave the city, we really won't miss anything. We are moving to a city with a community center, skating rink, jogging paths, and other ammenities this city doesn't seem to think are important to the quality of ones life.
People coming up with lists don't get out enough. I expect more for my tax dollar. City council members, not sure why any of them wanted job, not impressed.
The sound is so bad on channel 12 you can't understand anything. This has been an on going problem. This is not hard to fix so it does make me wonder what council doesn't want the residents to hear.

AGAIN-3:08 I have more than five reasons to be positive on Painesville. How many days ago was that challenge thrown out? Now you claim you have more than 5 reasons? Nope, not buying what you're shoveling now. Sorry, in your next line after you claim you can do it, you go after the hospital, schools and senior center. Nope, all negative nothing positive from your mouth or computer.

I am not so much on the positive or negative aspects of living here. More on the reality of living here. Does it suit what my family needs? The honest truth is, No. I have grown old waiting for this town to turn around and it just keeps plodding along. It really needs a wake up call to council and administrators. We seem to do enough just to get by or not make waves. This place has so much potential and it fails, continuously. It is encouraging to read the post, why a younger family purchased a century house here .
Would love to know the reason a few business have chosen to stay here, one is major stake holder of downtown lands. Has it gotten better for business or more challenging.

Positives or negatives has digressed to a very passive/aggressive issue between the moderator and a disgruntled blogger, too bad could have been a good post.

Off topic, has anyone else received a letter from R.I.T.A. Saying they didn't file a tax return and need to prove they did ASAP? Since the city switched from cca this is the second time I've gotten a letter. I hear my neighbors are all getting them too. Just wondering if more people are having this problem. Oh, and it goes back to 2008, six years ago!

At October 19, 2014 at 2:02 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

12:09 Yes I've heard from others. RITA (regional income tax) is new to the city. Previously CCA did the income tax for Painesville. It appears that when people answer RITA's questionnaire another one is generated^ The city should have someone in the administration that be contacted to clear up these misunderstanding.
I have always believed you could go back seven years on taxes? As with most tax related items see a professional.
9:11 I see your point and most people that view this as you have left.
Sandy, Yes one of us should have been an adult. I don't understand why anyone would want to know five anything about what I see as positive. I love Painesville and that's all there is to that story.

At October 19, 2014 at 2:06 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought CCA was bad until the City went to RITA.
They are simply unbelievable.
They want money for periods BEFORE they were the tax collecting agent.
They want money for taxes when the money has not been earned (it is called income tax for a reason).
Their forms take a CPA to figure out.
I am not a stupid person but reading through their instructions sure makes me feel that way.
I REALLY hope someone in the City Council reads this and wants to make a change. I have complained to several Council members. Maybe this will let others know that they are not alone.

3:29 I got a posse now? Outside of 9:17 comment although I will agree with many of the positives, a great library, and bakeries hardly make someone move to a city. Look at your property values, look at your shopping opportunities, look at your taxes, what makes most people move to a city are great schools. We can debate why for many reasons are schools have a failing grade and there are people in the system who are invested much time and energy to improve that situation. When people purchase a home it's not what the place could become but what the place presently is.
Sorta like a former city manager who only wants good news, you seem to fit the mold.
6:12 I don't know I have asked also and I would put the information on this site. One suggestion is that there is a site called "If you grew up in Painesville" but I don't know if that's what your speaking to it's a great site.

And you think Term is a curmudgeon?
