"EVE OF DESTRUCTION" barry mcguire

As a good friend Foghorn Leghorn would  say, I say, I say, boy there's a lot of destruction goin' on here in the Ville'?

Lets look over the past few years.

The schools. Was the plan all along for mini-parks? Yet the city claims it can't take care of what they have so they create more?

Old Harvey future site of what and when? Even the coming soon signs are now gone.

Lake East Hospital big hurry to tear it down so that we can do what? Chicago style housing?  Odd how many seemed to buy into that folly.Yet everything stayed the same. Well give it an interesting name. "High Pointe Centre" maybe "Failed Ideas  Buried  Centre" how about we  grow corn there next year and other vegetables to sell at our Farmer's Market. We can promote Chicago style veggie's!  The old hotel, met the wrecking ball. Nothing is safe even 239 Mentor Ave. Hell that building was built in the 1830's If that's not historic maybe we are looking for something from the Jurassic Park era? Someone even took a swing at General Paine  accident or omen?

Now they tore down the gas station at N. State and Erie so a new CVS can be built. Finally a purpose. The office building next to Burger King will soon be the site of our new county jail. Maybe it will be made official  after the election.

Why bring this up? Well whenever a building comes down the first question always asked is what are they going to build there? Seems Painesville  is razing building only because someone is willing to pay to do it..

Look there was no concrete plans for the hospital site only that Lake Health was willing to finance the project. They didn't want the possibility of any outside competition. Again where is that promised Urgent Care  Center? The Down Town Streetscape that was just a diversion by that administration to redirect attention from losing the hospital.

The hotel is gone. O.K. replaced with what? I hope the plan is to replace it with a tax generating endeavor ?

239 Mentor Ave. Anyone seen any future for that property?

Look this is Urban Renewal .2 In the old days say 50 years ago the government paid to tear the town down and finance something new going up. Today we just tear it down to be used  for what  parking for special events.

Someone mentioned that where were the  people and finances to purchase and rebuild 239 Mentor Ave. Well it's public funds tearing it down why can't public funds be used to rehabilitate the property?

Already missing the good general. Wonder what he's thinking?

I have been watching the demolition of the old hotel and have to say Holiday Inn did a good job on the construction of that old hotel. The structure was pretty well intact, even after years of neglect. The building should not have been torn down but instead repurposed. I hate to keep sounding like a broken record but this all goes back to economic development. We need some new blood, new ideas. I don't understand why council or the administration has such a hard time understanding this.
Currently I have gallery space in the old America Greeting bldg in Cleveland. The place is hopping! My rent is very affordable and w78th street studios has over 40 artists studios rented out with 17 more opening after the first of the year. What about places like the old telegraph building or the old schools would have been great especially State Street.

I have been a bit intrigued with the 239 Mentor Avenue property as I walk past it quite often. When the article came out last week I actually thought to try and get an appointment to see the inside and consider investing and rehabbing the house as I have been looking for this type of project.

The property is a bit of an odd property. The house sits below grade and very close to Mentor Avenue which means not only is it subject to a great deal of road noise from the passing traffic but also the storm water runoff would funnel towards the house (not having seen the inside I am curious if has had water issues in the basement). The entire side of the property borders the bike path so there would be little privacy in the backyard without creative landscaping.

I checked the auditors website and it shows the property being built in 1880 not early 1800's (still old but certainly not a Goldsmith house). It shows the house only being 2 bedrooms and 1 bath which does not make it that attractive for a residence so now what would you do with it make it? Looks to be another rental property?

My take as a potential investor/rehabber is it just isn't that attractive. I can only guess based on the outside condition that the inside is in need of work and dollars. I say if they have a deal to get it tore down let them and create a little extra green space.

I'm more than a little curious how the trustee's decided to let the bank have it. How did Thomas Reality get involved I just see something strange here.
Sandy, economic development around here means new names and lets keep doing it like it's 1965.
No Painesville's development is limited to narrow streets, awnings and painted trim. Oh I forgot pretend brick!

8:13 Yeah it's a Lib thing? What we should have is a Republican Governor, a Republican controlled Statehouse and all this ripping off (as you call it) would end. Well those Republicans have controled the state for the last four years?
What we need is people freezing to death, and children having frostbite. Throw in a few that stave to death. Will show them!

Milking the system, teaching how to do it, lying a little to get it, it's a community activist thing. It promotes a subculture. A subversive nonproductive subculture. Once it starts, and you try to stop it, you get a bad label.

Programs to help those who qualify for heat in the winter is a good thing. Heating a rented apartment with electricity is outrageous $$$. Thank God for gas.

I too have heard of Subzero and donated to them. I believe it was a fill the bus at one of the schools.
This is AMERICA and no person in this great land of ours should go hungry, without shoes or shelter. We NEED to stop sending our money to other countries for 'foreign aide'. Take care, the right care of our nation first, if we have any funds left we can help others. We need to stop welfare and the fraud that goes with it. Get a job, may not be the one you want, but help yourself up then get a hand along the way. Stop this entitlement - don't have a cell phone? The government will GIVE you one. Sorry, not everyone needs one. Cant afford to belong to the YMCA? Here have a free membership because my rates have gone up every year to pay for your free ride. Again, this is not a need it's a want.

10:33 Sounds like a worthwhile charity.
12:01 What a wonderful sub-cluture we could have if there were jobs that paid a living wage and having a job that gave you benefits that were far better then government programs. Keep importing America and you will keep contributing to this welfare subculture. Show me two people with two children making $7.50 an hour and tell me financially they would be better off than being on welfare. Include healthcare and food stamps. We punish people for taking low wage jobs here and then we complain about the government assistance they receive?
Raising my family I had a good paying job, benefits that included health care and retirement, oh yes it was a union job damn union providing me and my family the good life. Even min. wage was 25% higher in those days compared to todays dollar.
But let's give the 1% everything.

TERM, Independent 12:01 here. Disjointed random comments follow.

There will always be the 1%. They achieve because they are ambitious and fight their way to the top. It’s HOW they fight and WHO gets hurt that counts. Not ALL 1 percenters hurt their way to the top. But they are always a great target because they have more than we do.

I've always marveled at the words and tactics of the Unions. They have an agenda and ways to implement it. It isn't always fair or pretty either. Pitting the haves and have not’s against each other has always been a tactic since the beginning of time. I hate it because it is counterproductive. The "ends justify the means" idea is just so corrupt no matter which side wields it.

Americans are being manipulated constantly by so many groups. America and Americans rise above that because we are a nation of free people and we are willing to fight for it. If we lose our freedoms guaranteed by the constitution, we will become surfs. The constitution is always under attack by those who choose to ignore it.

I realize I am putting forth mostly statements, but if I could write and speak more eloquently, I'd be a politician. 12:01, out.

Term you had a good paying JOB is the key word! did the union or YOU? provide for your family? WHY was there welfare when it was so good back then? It was to help them get back on their feet! if you could check you will find the same family's are on it TODAY! WHY? TAKE all the 1% money you could not pay for welfare alone!

12:01 yes there will always be a 1% many reaching that status by ambition and hard work. Ever notice how these newer 1% seem to have progressive idea's?. Then there are the likes of say the Koch Bros. They were born on third base and believe they hit a home run every morning. There wealth, well they inherited it. no hard work just a couple of lucky sperms.
Do you think the middle class is under pressure because there are fewer unions? Look even if you worked at a non-union business that business had to compete with union jobs don't have to for the most part anymore.
7:01 I worked for poor and middle class people my whole life and unless you are into the private jet business you did to. Were the rich the only ones going to the store to buy a half-gallon of milk? Were rich people the only ones who purchased Chevy Biscayne's? The guy down the street assembled at a Chevy plant? No the happiest days at work was not when the union got me a dime but when the company gave me a bigger truck! Look we worked on commission the more I made the more my employer made. If the truck broke down nobody made anything so the company gave you good equipment and you took care of it. Holidays just another day the cows didn't know it was a holiday. Now take for example UPS and Fedx. UPS driver's are Teamsters. Fedx non-union ask who has a better hourly wage, who has a better benefit package? Yet to send a package cost the same sometimes UPS is cheaper and sometimes Fedx. You get rid of the Teamsters and employee's in both companies will suffer.
7:26 Look there are many success stories and there are many failures I guess it comes down to the individual. I know a young man that grew up on welfare and as that young man reached the age of reasoning his goal was to never have his family on welfare.
Again life gives us winner's and loser's.

12:24 So you believe I'm a Communist? Sorry the greatest fear I have for the future of this country is it little by little becoming an Oligarchy ruled and controlled by the few . Even more since the late 70's we seem to be in the process of becoming a Plutocracy where a few control all the wealth. Check the number's it's happening right in front of our eyes. Sorry in no way do I believe Marx or Lenin is the way to go. As Mr. Bucar once mentioned Communisms does work for one simple reason. Who stays up at night and takes care of the sick cow in a collective?

SUB ZERO
Dear Friends,
This is the 2nd year that the The Sub Zero Mission bus will be here at Heritage Middle School 135 Cedarbrook Dr., Painesville, Ohio on Friday 11/14, from 10am-2pm. The bus will be set up on the side of the school near the basketball courts and practice fields for drop offs that day. If anyone needs to drop off items earlier due to being unable to come on November 14th, please call Ms DeAngelis at Heritage Middle School.
We are asking ALL staff, students and everyone in the Painesville community to help us stuff the Sub Zero Mission bus with men’s and women’s new or gently used coats, snow pants, tents, sleeping bags, hats, gloves and blankets. These items will be distributed, by volunteers, to the homeless people in our local area, with special focus on Military Veterans, to save lives this winter. PLEASE look around your house for these items to be donated! Nobody should freeze to death in America!

Info about the Sub Zero Mission:

The Sub Zero Mission was started in 2009, by Al Raddatz a former U.S Marine who served active duty from 1990-96, as a means of collecting sleeping bags to be distributed directly to the homeless. Using email and social networking, the mission collected approximately 50 sleeping bags. These were handed out to the area homeless. In 2014, The Sub Zero Mission continues on as a charity run by members and volunteers, to prevent the freezing and injury caused by extreme weather exposure of the homeless and financially destitute Americans, with special focus on Military Veterans. Transportation, fuel and other incidentals has been provided by the members and volunteers of The Sub Zero Mission.
*I believe I read PPD will be collecting also.
