"TRACES" classics IV

  "HAPPY FATHERS DAY 2013"

Photographs, tickets torn in half.

Everyone from council to the administration along with residents are trying to find new revenue streams for the city's general fund.

My thoughts it must be resident neutral meaning not just hitting workers, property owners, renters as well as  just people on the upper scale or the lower scale.

I was presented with the idea of camera tickets watching major intersections for people who run red lights and camera's placed in school zones to ticket people driving over the posted speed limit during certain hours. We may get two benefits from this, revenue and safer drivers.

I would like to hear your thoughts. I believe Euclid has this system where a private company sends the ticket and collects the money, working on a percentage system. 65% to the city and they keep 35% for there trouble.

When I first heard this idea I was very opposed to the idea and than after thinking about it  seems like a decent fair idea.

Maybe someone could start a company with the only responsibility of writing parking violation. No meter reader and the police can do important work in the process. Working on a percentage.

Let's hear your thoughts, please.

A neighbor of mine told me you might have some influence on this subject. My mother who can't get around very well has to have my assistance to get around. Recently she wanted some Chinese food and wanted to check the menu at China House downtown. We parked on St. Clair St. and walked over to China House as we got close there was a fence a light pole as well as a car bumper that blocked our way in front of Your Vine or Mine. To get by we had to walk in the middle of Main St. to get to the restaurant.
Why is the city allow this to happen. It seems very unreasonable to assume the city approved this?

Influence? A cork from a bottle has more influence about this than me.
Look I've asked zoning, planning, council how that fence was ever approved?

No one knows The city planner told me the city. When I asked who in the city he didn't know.
Now I guess we could make a fuss about this but within a month the fence as well as the front door will be history for at least 90 days.

Lets see how this works out. Presently the owners of this establishment seems to careless of your concerns. It is so important that they have this sidewalk tables so their customers can look west at a Bank Building in need of major repairs, east to see a rundown former hotel. To the north to the county health and human service building?
They must think these sites are conducive to more alcohol consumption?

Street lights car bumpers and fences are more important than your mother getting anywhere on Main St.
I have promised myself never to spend my money there.

I would hope every liquor establishment in Painesville does the same fencing.

How is it that no one knows anything about this? I have seen this fence and in a word it is hideous.

Here we go again, mind you that personally I think the fenced in area is somewhat worthless. The establishment in question received a permit from the city, so someone there is well aware and did approve of the fence in order to get the permit. Why is it you never complain about the Sidewalk Café at Main and State STreet?
Take a look at how tight that space is at a busy intersection with tables wedged between the building and the newspaper boxes. While we are at it why are newspaper boxes allowed?
How about Joughins putting lawnmowers and equipment in front of their store?
My point is not to change those businesses but rather don't play favorites. Everyone wonders why businesses are not in downtown, trust me the city is already doing more than enough to discourage them. Another thought perhaps the Main Street Project will serve to rectify some of this "problem" that exists.

11:12 Here we go again. WHO signed that permit? No one knows.

If I remember right the city made La Mexicana change?

The difference between Sidewalk Café, Joughins? Well NO fence.
I can go past Joughins, Sidewalk Café with no problem .If there was you could move a table or a flower pot with no problem.

Your Vine or Mine seems to believe they own that property. who do you know that would fences in something they don't own?
And in a good business practice thumbs their nose at anyone who might be inconvenienced.

I have a pretty good idea how this happened and lets just ask who in Painesville could have let this happen without going through proper channels?

I agree the Main St. project could solve this lets hope it does.
Still who knows who to get this done?

Forget the fences. I think ticket cameras are a bad idea.
What would ever make you think people would go along with this?

I guess we can all vote NO and forget about it?

Today I watched a car travel through a red light with a waiting police car on the street with the green light. Either he ignored the offense or he was watching something else?
I have been told by an officer they have been told to ignore parking offenses?
Wonder why your broke?

I don't think traffic camera profit would even make the down payment on a sewer jet truck.

Start looking into economic development, it is the only way to dig out of this mess.

starting to get the feeling council and city hall are waiting for the new city manager to start...... they need a leader and I hope he can fill the bill.

Cameras giving traffic tickets sounds a little too much like Orwell's 1984. I have a friend who went to Europe last year and came back, six weeks later received tickets via the rental car company for alledged speeding violations taken by some mechanical device, how do you challenge that?
I have seen stories on the camera tickets, the company that provides them gets a percentage of the tickets and they are not infallible. No one should be profiting from writing more tickets, that's profiting on someone elses misfortune or mistakes.

Good idea. This would be safe for our school children.

What's Happening Painesville?????

Well we have a safety levy possible coming this fall.
Now many people tell me the police don't do much but talk on cell phones and drive around?

You know a community can get to believe that if for some reason the people in charge might not want you to be aware of what's happening around here? Meth Lab?

First mid week a Painesville business was robbed at gun point. The Business owner and the alleged robber scuffled {this could have turn out badly}
The alleged robber fled the scene but left something behind. The Painesville Police have this person in custody. Good police work not accomplished by sitting around or talking on a cell phone.

My question is why is this a secret?

Sandy, Last year Cleveland had revenue of 6 million dollars? Now I know we're not Cleveland but 5% of that amount is still $300,000.
Council as well as the administration definitely are looking for leadership.
At the last two council meeting the only thing the seemed to agree on was we need more money.
I can only hope Mr. Carson comes in and straightens things out. With his background I feel directors won't be able to shovel you know what at him.
5:59 That's pretty much how I felt when first approached with this idea. With that kind of thinking would it be O.K. to identify a criminal using a camera robbing a store? We could only use eye witnesses? As much as I agree with you we need money and if we don't want to raise taxes we need other solutions.

Seems odd what's there?

If The Police would give out tickets for the idiots that are driving around with sound systems in cars that rattle windows in houses they could pay of all the bills.

WHY DO THEY NOT CARE ABOUT THE NOISE
ANYMORE ?

intersection cameras a very bad idea, the Marx Brothers must have been hired when the "new" lights were installed, the timing is a joke, adding cameras would only add insult to injury. There is no one with the intelligence to run such a system from the street dept, so money would just go to a vendor, maybe a few cents on a dollar, and its not a safety issue, smarten up.

4:15 After a ticket or two don't you think people will drive slower thru a school zone?
I can agree with you. What would you believe the best and fairest idea would be?

4:15! I went to city hall with exactly this issue and was told the city had hired a firm to time all the lights...... I said; You have change coming!

They do not perceive there is problem. I have customers who drive around downtown and come in through Perry or Vrooman Road! I even approached the issue as an energy saver....... Nothing.

yes, this makes me crazy!

On those intersection cameras...... Is it possible to rent them from a private company for a year at the school zones or intersections with high accident rates to see if this would be feasible before going all in?

Also watch idiots race down that suicide lane on Rt. 20 to jump in line a few cars up. That really needs to be addressed!

THE CAMERAS SEEM TO BE WORKING VERY GOOD IN OTHER CITIES. try it it could be, "BETTER IN PAINESVILLE."

Sandy, Anytime someone mentions something that should or needs to be fixed our professional staff always defers to a 'hired firm' Why do we need these professionals? All you need is someone that can dial a phone number.
It's not there problem just their job.
We can only hope our new city manager see through all this B.S.

The police do seem to turn the other cheek a lot here. I too have seen people run lights and stop signs and no one bothers to ticket them. Loud noise? I agree ticket them also. Get with the program and enforce the laws here. Begining with these and ending with the illegals.

Sandy, I give you respect. I went to city hall with a different approach and asked to see the job descriptions of the supervisor and director and found that, surprisingly, they are responsible personally for running the software which had been turned over to the city after installation. Never happened, an issue of expectations an accountability I guess. The obvious answer of "outside firms" is to deflect. Maybe that is the answer though to many issues facing residents, out source.
Was at the electric plant Saturday, wonderful event, and I asked why the plant was not producing electricity, cost was $25 a megawatt to buy and $50 to generate, so why have it staffed and more importantly, why am I paying a surcharge. It is supposed to be a charge the city imposes when the cost to generate exceeds their revenue. But when the plant shuts down, to excessive costs and buys from the grid, the city should not charge me, but really owes me a rebate. That brought my tour guide to a halt with nothing to say, poor guy, but all that ancient machinery, ever so quite was fun to see for a first time. But times change, maybe its time to shutter and just keep distribution. Look at CEI's Eastlake plant. Anyway, I would love to read some residents comments. And, have a good day Sandy

>I was presented with the idea of camera tickets watching major intersections<

Another great idea for never going to Painesville for anything!

11:52 So why are they not presently going to Painesville for anything?

To get a good deal, or a quality product along with a good dining experience people have a knack for finding and going to these places.

7:13 I'm glad that more than a few have been following how well this city doesn't operate. There is no reason for operating this way except this is the way we always have. I expect the power plant to go off line soon. The party's over now we can go back to playing cards or cutting grass again.
Pretty good show Saturday.
