"MAPLE ELEMENTARY"

Mr. Sebring Principal at Maple Elementary who I have found to be pro-active sent home a letter with students about changes to be made when returning to school after the first of the year.

BREAKFAST (8:15-8:30)
Over the past few years, we have allowed parents to come in and sit with their kids during breakfast. However, in an effort to be proactive and maintain a safe environment for all children, parents are no longer permitted to sit with children during breakfast. Children are to be dropped off at the main entrance. Maple Staff are readily available to supervise and assist children. Thank you for your understanding in this manner.

PARENTS IN BUILDING (8:15-8:40)
Safety of all students is our primary focus. In an effort to proactively provide a safe environment. I am no longer allowing parents to walk down the building to drop children off at classrooms. Please say your goodbye prior to entering the building. If it is necessary for you to escort your child, please schedule to meet with  Mr. Sebring to discuss this option. If you have made prior arrangements for a meeting, please be sure to properly sign in at the main office with Mrs. Haffa or Mrs. Carmona.

AFTER SCHOOL (2:55 AND AFTER)
A strong partnership between home and school is essential. If you need to discuss anything with your child's teacher, please call them by phone to arrange a scheduled time to meet. Scheduling a time to meet and/or talk allows your child's teacher to be prepared for your conversation. Dropping in unannounced on teachers after school does not allow time for adequate preparation. As always, you can communicate with your child's teacher by notes, classroom phone or email. The best way to track your child's daily academic progress is by logging in to the Parents Portal each day. If you need assistance with this , please email Mr. Sebring at daniel.sebring@ pcls.net.

Please feel free to contract me if you should have any questions.

I believe the first step Mr. Sebring wants to do is account for everyone in this building.

Why just 1 school out of 5? They should all be on the same page.

Congratulations to Mr. Sebring for starting to take steps. I'm sure nobody ever thought they would see the day when we would have to be afraid for our children in school, and have to do things like keep the parents out unless they have permission, in order to start accounting for every person in the building, but here it is. It is some good first steps, and I think he should be commended. On behalf of your students and your staff (even though I am not one of them), thank you.

They all might have. This was the letter my granddaughter brought home.
What I got from this letter is that all adults in the building are accounted for and the administration doesn't have a "Who's That?"

I suggested to a board member that the building should also be locked after school during the Y key afterschool program. The door should always be locked. It seems they took this suggestion.

Term 6:27: Good for you, and good for them for acting on the suggestion. For sure you are right; the doors should always be locked - right up until the last janitor is leaving and must unlock it to get out, and lock it again once he/she is out.

7:06 I am sure many of us see minor things that the school's would act on. These are our schools and our responsibility.
We all want our schools to be a safe place.

It is a shame that it has come to this, but I commend this principal for implementing this. When I would go to my kids' school in the Township, you would have to be buzzed in, but they just automatically opened the door and did not even ask what I was there for. I think this is a great idea and, unfortunately, it should be implemented in every school.

Yes,it is a shame. I hope you bring this up to the proper authorities. No matter who or what distrit the school is in.

This should have occurred last year when a Heritage teacher's husband came into the school and threatened a staff member with physical harm in front of 60 children. Just so you know there was no discipline for the teacher and her husband's actions.

We should be taking even more safety precautions, and we should all be supporting our principals. This year we are honored to have a true leader at the high school. What a difference it has made. Kids are on time and ready to work.
The atmosphere is educational for the first time in a very long time and I am so grateful. However, I'm afraid it will not continue if our principal does not get support from our board, superintendent, assistant superintendent and the community. Change is not always easy or welcomed, but our school is changing for the better and I pray it continues. Keep up the good work Mr. McWreath and thank you.

Well, my grandkids attend city schools and they haven't brought home a letter. Again, why just one school?

Why just one school? We don't have a captain at the helm!

We have SIX schools. Everyone forgets about our preschool. Red Raider, it is in Cedarbrook building - Lake/Geuga Head Start is in that building as well. Red Raider Preschoolnhas Painesville City Local teachers, paraprofessionals, and children. That school has been brought to board members attention several times BEFORE this tragedy occurred. TERRIBLE security, the worst in the district! Check it out! The youngest children- preschool students, sone with special needs. ANYONE can get in that building at any time!

7:01 I agree that for the first time in several years we have a TRUE LEADER at the high school. Mr. McWreath, you are doing a fabulous job. Thank you. I now feel safe sending my kids to the high school.

3:38 If you feel that way, support him before he "slips away" or is "driven off."
Truth be told it's in the communities hands.

I have thought a lot about this subject as I have children I take to one of the other schools in the system. If I had not read your blog I would have never known about the rules at Maple. I firmly believe that security should be at the top of the list EVERY year. Cameras, lights, signs, buzzers, panic buttons, etc. should be checked and working. This includes Red Raider Preschool and Head Start.I believe that additional security measures should have been put in place after a team -including parents- gathered and made recommendations. If you look at those school shootings, all of them have been done by young white males that have had some form of mental concerns. We need to find a way to still have the type of parental interactions within the school and have them safe for all. This should be a DISTRICT policy and not just one school. All children are important and not just those that attend Maple! Teachers should not use the school shootings as a way to keep parents from enjoying the joy of participating in their child's school life. I recently brought my child to school with a project. I was greeted by a rude secretary who informed me that she had to ask the teacher for permission to help the child take the project to the classroom. I don't fit the profile and I have never committed a crime and yet this is how I, a tax payer supplying her job, was treated. I believe there are better ways!
