"WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE" alice cooper

Well I guess it's time for "What's Happening  Painesville" to welcome Harvey High School's new Principal Van McWreath to our little town.
I have asked numerous people both here and in Ashtabula  about him. All I can tell you is that the people I spoke with all were extremely positive about him.

Yes Harvey there's a new sheriff in town.

Former Head Football Coach, four years serving in our military. Sounds like a throwback to the good old days. Along with this not being his first rodeo. Why does it seem former football coach's make great Principals?

How our new Principal will succeed or not, really depends on the community, parents, teachers  as well as the administration and the Board of Education. I personally am tired of seeing Harvey's name dragged though the mud.
This nightmare must end now.

If we want a safe well run school where education comes first and foremost than I believe this is the right person for the job. If the administration, board member listen to few unhappy parents because Johnny or Jane are not happy with the rules at Harvey and these elected and non-elected administrator's bend to these parents wishes with threats of voting against a levy or maybe even the threat of a lawsuit. Well then the Board should just hire Barnaby.

Yes it might be a shock to students when they return to school later this month but they should look at this as an opportunity to see how life works in the real world.

To the educators in this building I believe you will have someone covering your back and will support you 100%. Please don't expect him to go to the mat over foolishness.

As a recent frequent poster who works in the middle school, I hope you are right.....however, we had someone with the same ideas as him at our school, but he was pressured from above, to not suspend so many students. We needed them to be suspended, I don't care what they say on Jefferson Street.....we will never get anywhere as long as administrators let students and parents get away with things that we all know that they shouldn't. Are the higher ups on Jefferson Street ready to take a stand, and not cow-tow to certain students and families, and TRULY put education first in this district. As a HHS alumni and teacher in the district, it saddens me to see what we have become. 90% of the kids and parents are great, but we waste too much time on the 10%. I told someone that we should have kept part of the old Harvey, and turned it into the district alternative school, where those 10% can get the help and structure they need, while the other 90% can truly excel and worry about passing the test....just my opinion....

4:29 To much paperwork for the folks at Jefferson St. to deal with. Seems they believe good PR is more important than our kids getting an education.
No the 10% must be taught that in school as in life we must follow rules. I can tell you some learn this and some don't. The ones that don't cut them loose.

Do we have an alternative school where the kids who aren't making it in regular school can go?

You have to be careful about "cutting them loose." That all but insures they will fail in life. Those are the kids that need the guidance the most. The simple fact that they ARE young means that they don't yet have the capacity to really comprehend just how they are ruining their lives. That's where the adults have to make every effort to step in and to try to keep them on the line so that they can be educated and helped.

I'm not taking away from the fact that they create problems, and I am certainly not saying that this is not a hard thing for teachers/schools to be tasked with--I'm just saying that these are the kids that need good adults the most.

DO we have an alternative place for these kids to go? And there also has to be at least one adult that is running after them trying to catch that crashing bus if they are to survive and end up a productive, reasonably happy member of society.

I know your heart is with the kids, Term, so I'm not taking YOU to task...I'm just sayin... I know that there was a house started for a few boys by some very dedicated people not long ago, but I think that was only for a few boys (not that that is not important).

When these kids grow up some more and take a good look around, they need to see an open door in their future, not a dead end with no way to figure out where to go and what to do to get themselves out of the nowhere box they have created for themselves.

by the time the police got there he took everything he wanted and rode off on his bike, he was in side the SUV and got out, why did the police not look for finger prints ??????

Well written, and the underlying theme is leadership. Military background, coaching, these are experiences that teach leadership. The position requires implementation of policies and procedures, which lead to expectations of what different behaviors will lead to, firm, fair and consistent. Very good point that there needs to be Board support and Administration support, but also staff. Time will tell. Wish this person the best, new energy and ideas are important to an organization. Too many times an answer to an issue is, "we have always done it this way".

Are you all really this naive? Would someone please explain to me why rushing to hire a new Principal is such a great idea? Has anyone stopped to ask why this great new administrator left his previous job so quickly? What kind of dedicated educator jumps positions with less than a month to go before a new school year? Why was his previous system so eager to let him go? Has anyone considered that. Given the time frame, the only candidates left available were the ones that no one else wanted? That vaunted search company only had the dregs left to offer. The good prospects had already found their positions. Why didn't the Board consider an in-house interim candidate or offer the position to someone already here?
I can only wonder how this apparent martinet (look it up) is going to fare within the walls of Harvey. There are already rumblings by the staff concerning his style and willingness to work with those in the know. I agree, the student body needs to learn about discipline, manners and how the real world works but, unswerving, overly harsh enforcement of absolute devotion to rules and regulations is not the way to go.
All I can say is Good Luck, you're going to need it.

I hope the new Principal and the SRO establish a good working relationship. With common goals and objectives. We need to restore consistancy in matters of disclipline, dress code, attendance and tardiness. Good Luck Mr McWreath we are very hopefull of this new opportunity.

6:11 SEE 5:40.
My point seems to be if we continue to go on the same path why would you expect a different outcome?
The Harvey as well as Heritage have leadership in place that will expect certain bahavior and civility from their students. This is a plus for everyone.

Yes, It won't be long before the daggers in town come out for anyone who wants to change the status quo.

Martinet? We had a Martin how did that work out? Yes presently to rght the ship a drill sargeant presently seems needed.

5:46 Your assumption is correct.

9:20 Ask the police? How would anyone here know? What were you doing up so early looking for Painesvilles exclusive pay phone?

6:11 Please explain how you get by?
I guess you go through live not following rules? Wher are they to learn that there are rules and regulations. Our jails are filled with people who didn't think those rules included them.

Mr. McWreath has a big job ahead of him. I have my hopes and I'm so grateful that he is willing to step up and give it a try. Our kids need boundaries, rules, discipline and consistency. I've worked in the district a long time and I can tell you for certain that it can't be worse than the last seven years. When I started in Painesville I was so impressed with how they had preserved traditions and how it felt like a family. The last administrator nearly destroyed all of that. I hope Mr. McWreath can bring some of it back.
