"MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE' the police

The Painesville Oversight Committee has received this memo through freedom of information from the Painesville Police Department.

You can decide for yourselves if this is the procedure we want in place at Harvey.

Subject: Communication with Administration

Dear Staff:

In a meeting with the SRO, it has come to our attention (Missy, Dave, and I) that teachers are calling, emailing, and reporting students to the SRO without first (or ever) reporting incidents to Dave, Missy or me. Please refer to the call list that has been shared in the past if you need assistance in your classroom. Remember, immediate disruptions should be directed by a phone call to Mrs. 0 (ISA), Val, Darlene, or an administrator as we all have walkie talkies and can be alerted to a classroom. Phone calls or emails directly to Officer Ponder do not properly keep us in the loop and we need to close that communication gap. Communication between teachers and SRO should not commonly occur (except on very rare occasions), and should occur only when directed first by an administrator. Remember, students are protected under FERPA, and ONLY directory information can be shared with individuals that are not PCLS employees.

Thanks for your cooperation.

It's not about what we want, its about adherence to the procedures dictated by state and federal laws. Sounds like the principal is ensuring staff compliance to regulations.
Good job!!!!

So am I to believe that if a violent incident happens the first person notified should be an administrator? Rather than a professional that's trained in handling such incidents?
Please direct me to that state or federal law's your speaking of.
Sorry I can't agree.

I'm sad to see Mr. Grippi leave! He and Mrs. Martin both had great ideas/chemistery. I was looking foward for them to work to gether to better the Pvll. School system. I hope Mrs. Martin continues to work with her ideas and doesn't leave too.

The letter refers to "reports", which are administration issues to handle. Violent issues are obviously handled by the SRO officer.

Please read the letter again very carefully and then provide your opinion. I am so interested to read your view.

At March 26, 2012 at 9:31 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

First off at the beginning of the year this policy was put into action to be able to cut down on the number of reports that were generated to the state by the SRO.
If the teachers are contacting the SRO then I would have to believe they feel that it is necessary and they are not getting the needed support from the administration.

I am very sorry to see that Ross left the board! I hope that we will learn the reason.

At March 27, 2012 at 6:50 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

6:12 The memo refers to reports? I read it to mean the number of disruputions? I believe a teacher would only call the SRO if these disruptions could cause physical harm to a student or themselves.
Teachers are not calling the SRO over frivilous incidents.
Who cares how many reports are generated?

At March 27, 2012 at 7:01 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The amount of reports is not the issue, it's the reporting process which needs to be followed. What is wrong with you people? I know, your from the Grippi cloth, you make your own rules. See where that got him!!!!!

At March 27, 2012 at 7:10 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

The reporting process? What administrator decides if you should call the SRO? [read the memo}
Please lets not sweep everything under a rug. Teachers are smart enough to know when a policemam is needed.
Yes I'm proud to be from Mr. Grippi's cloth, you make your own rules? Seems better than no rules?
What you should be concerned of is where this will get our students.

7:28 I'm not hopeless?
Neither is Harvey.
It's seems what's seems to be happening is that to many of us want to pretend there isn't a problem.
Everyone in this community has a vested interest in the schools being as successful as they can be.
If you have a child you want the best possible education and if your a homeowner you want to be able to sell your property for what its worth.
Those of you who believe all Harvey needs is a little tweeking are wrong.
Parents need to show up at board meetings to help them set goals.
Harvey leads the county in suspension and expulsions
there trying to create the proper environment for learning for kids who want to be there and want to learn something.

Term, gosh darn it, your not hopeless after all!!
You are correct, now let's stop with all the drama and work with the administration to drive improvements for uou children, families, and our community.

At March 27, 2012 at 6:19 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

First of all Administrators do not respond very fast or at all they always have an excuse.

Why was there nothing in the papers over the 75 students who rioted the halls of Harvey?

Ross Grippi was so mistreated that he said enough is enough! Furthermore, Hanlon lied in the papers, he was notified a week earlier of his leaving and why!

Painesville City Schools needs a house cleaning and a big stick!

Parents and homeowners need to take their school back.

At March 28, 2012 at 6:46 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

4:02 No drama, I have spent my first day at Harvey Monday as a D.O.G.
Very interesting day. And again no drama.
I witnessed many good things and just a few bad things. I believe it would only be fair to discuss this with Ms. Martin before I reached a conclusion.

At March 28, 2012 at 7:34 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No riot in the hallways that's why it wasn't in the paper.
Ross Grippi mistreated? He is the one who has pyhsically, verbally, and emotionally hurt children over the years. Remember when he grabbed a student by the throat? Everyone in the community knows this and it's time we stand against this type of behavior.

I also agree that Hanlon must go!!!!! We have not held him accountable thus we are stuck in this rut as a school district. Who is willing to call for his job?HOw about you, Term?

No, I really don't care about the little kids. Their not high profile enough. Plus their principals are _________.

You fill in the blank.

Just to clue some of you in....those reports that make it to the state are included in the disciplinary records....take the time to get on the state education site and check it out. It is very interesting reading. And for any of you that does not think there is a problem in the Painesville City schools...maybe you should try taking off those rose colored glasses and looking again.

At March 28, 2012 at 1:02 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

REW,

Everyone knows there are problems. However, the problems will not go away until Hanlon goes away.

The data is fine and dandy. The question is what are you willing to do with it?

Talk was cheap 30 years ago and it's cheap today.

At March 28, 2012 at 3:50 PM , Anonymous in the trenches said...

Unless you are working in that building, you really have no clue as to what takes place. There WAS a near riot about a month ago and let me tell you it was frightening. So, Anonymous (7:34) you are misinformed. You want to know who is really mistreated? THE TEACHERS!!!! They are totally disrespected by the students and by the administrators. Students are NOT held accountable for their actions. Administrators are inconsistent with discipline!!!!! One student gets punished for cutting class once, while another student cuts class 47 times without a consequence. Breaking the rules at Harvey is like going to Vegas. Just roll the dice and see what happens. Maybe I'll get caught this time....maybe I won't. The kids don't even know the rules. In fact, the administrators don't know the rules. I asked, "what is the consequence for being tardy to school multiple times?" The response from an administrator was, "It depends." It depends????? On what????? Does that make sense to anyone? How about having a rule in place and then discipline everyone the same? Hmmmm...That makes sense. I could give you a thousand examples of inconsistencies, but I'll end with just one. If a student gets kicked out of class for being disruptive, then they get sent to ISA. If they are unruly in ISA, then they get sent to an administrator. SOMETIMES and for SOME PEOPLE the student is then suspended, but for others they get to sit in an administrator's office and hang out and play on the computer. Does that sound fair to you?
And by the way, Anonymous (7:34) We've all stopped living in the past. Whatever Mr. Grippi did back in 1979 really doesn't matter to me anymore. He has done thousands of wonderful things for thousands of students over the years.

I saw a small glimpse of what teachers are dealing with at Harvey presently.
I'm glad you mentioned the near riot people were giving me to much credit for having a policeman in the building.
I am looking forward to having a talk with Ms. Martin in the near future.
Since my day there things are bothering me more and more.
Remember this time when I was there I wasn't shadowing the SRO.

Term, retire to Florida!

In the trenches, your probably an underperforming teacher. Follow Grippi's lead and get out!!!!!

For the most part the teachers are doing a great job and I commend them for that.

Oh my a near riot?
Again, I am concerned about Grippi leaving. As I ask around I am hearing several items like: The administration was coming down on his significant other who works at Harvey by making many demands on her that were not being made on others. I also heard that he felt that he could not make any changes as Hanlon has the upper hand. And last I heard that the Board was coming after Grippi because he didn't live in Painesville even though he owns property and gets his mail in Painesville. So it all seems to fit the behavior of the board and Hanlon.
I also hear that the Sports programs are broke and bingo is closing for the summer most likely to never open again. What a sad day for all.
"Dogs" day recently in the elementary schools has also raised some concerns. To discuss this with people responsible for the control of the building. It would be worth everyone's time to spend a few hours helping in the schools to see the true picture of concern at all levels. The 4th and 5th graders are a huge concern-just think of what they will be like at the high school level!

9:57 I have three grandchildren. One at Heritage, and two in elementary school. I plan to visit them all. Harvey at the time had the fewest parents involved. Please speak for yourself and not for me.
7:35 Yes for the most part the teachers are doing a great job. Why no support from administrator's? Why so little respect from a small group of students?
What are the consequences?
One thing I noticed when the comments in the News-Herald came up people who thought Mr. Grippi was terrible mentioned it under anonymous names. People who spoke positively signed there names. That to me says it all.
7:34 You want ME to ask for Dr. Hanlon to leave get some moxie and go up there yourself. As if they would listen to me.
As far as the Booster's Bingo program closing I have no knowledge about that. The best kept secret in Painesville is how many hard working volunteer's have given so much time so the student's have a first rate athletic program. If that money drys up?

To 1:02 PM..the point I was trying to make was that the state figures are pretty bad for PCLS and they are only made up of the numbers that actually get reported. Seems like the letter Ms. Martin issued is trying to circumvent some of those incidents being reported. It would not be the first time that the information we have (scanty as it is) at the local level is not accurately reflected when and where it is supposed to be. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

Amid all this speculation, has anyone considered the Ross was forced to resign because he is NOT a Painesville resident? It is quite possible that this has nothing to do with administration throwing their weight, and comes down to someone not being qualified to hold that office.

At April 2, 2012 at 3:41 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Yes It could even be as simple as Mr. Grippi thinking do I need all this? As far as qualified I believe you couldn't find a candidate as qualified as Ross. I heard rumblings that people like Ross and myself want to go back to the 60's and 70's?. I would at this point be glad to get back to the
90's.

At April 3, 2012 at 4:35 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No no...qualified as in did not fit the residency requirements. He is more than qualified as far as his professional background goes. I think it's a shame that he took the opportunity to serve in that office from someone else who ran for it, just to resign in 3 months. But even when he petitioned to be on the ballot he was not a legal Painesville resident.

At April 3, 2012 at 6:46 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

He was forced to resign. Ross obviously committed some sort of violation which got him in trouble.Qualified? Don't make me laugh. 60,70,80,90's don't compare to 2012. Every freaking aspect of our society is different. The way we were raised and disiplined doesn't work today. Today's parents and schools have different challenges and need different solutions. Term's,Ross,or my way will not work. Term,, you need to help. Pointing out the obvious is getting us no where. Going into the school yelling at the students with a white t-shirt is not going to work. Kids now days will laugh at you...just like they did.

To this poster I don't care who's living where with you that's why I deleted it.

6:46 So things have changed so much that when a student is asked by a teacher where is he supposed to be, he can use profanity and charge at the teacher aggressively?
Another student can make a sexual remark to another person on staff and laugh at them about it? A dress code where a student wears a cap all day and is constantly pulling up his pants yet most of the time he shows 8 inches of his underwear?

The bell rings you have 4 minutes to get to class the bell rings again an many could care less that class has started? Still socializing in the hall, teachers voices unheard as if they were deaf? Yes things have changed and not for the good. Ask a Chardon resident.
This is our future and I guess we must accept that young people have no respect for anyone even themselves?
Harvey has camera's monitoring the halls that's what should be shown on channel 96 so residents can view what their paying for.

Just to let all of you know that the State Super. is from Madison and a friend of Dr. Hanlon. At least one of the schools should have had changes made BUT the game that was played involved changing school numbers (as listed with Columbus) so that the schools all appear to be different schools. This buys time for the administration and teachers in the low or poor performing schools. In Cinn. the Super.took a bold step and closed the lowest performing school. She reassigned the teachers and fired or reassigned the administration.
The school reopened with an entire new staff that had been sent over the summer to a University down South that offers workshops in how to deal successfully with children of poverty/ELL/challenges. We need this type of administration and knowledge in Paineville so we can see success again!
