"ANOTHER DAY IN PARIDISE" genesis

I going to need some help with this one. At the last school board meeting Treasurer Taylor made what I thought to be a mistake in a statement that "If Issue Two becomes law it will cost the board of education money".
So if S.B. 5 becomes law a law that is to give us the "tools" to save money, will end up costing us money?
At the end of the meeting when citizen are allowed to ask questions I asked Mr. Dillard if Mr. Taylor could explain that statement since there is so much confusion over this Bill.
As far as I and two others in the audience believe what they heard, yes the statement was true?
Mr.Taylor then stated that all administrators salaries would have to be renegotiated since the teachers would be making more money then an administrator's?
I thought long and hard before putting this on the blog. because it just didn't make sense to me?
So if someone out there can explain what I think I heard was a mistake or even explain why this would cost more money and I heard Mr. Taylor correctly.
Does S.B. 5 only cover "Union" employees and how does this affect administrators?

I need some clarification here and am asking for your help.

As I read SB5 if only effects the union for teachers, fire, police, and blue collar state workers. It does not effect the higher ups and the politiction ofcourse. As read in most news articles most public unions have been taking no raises and paying more for health benifis. The bill seems to be aimed at the wrong end of the pay scale

I would like to know if you heard anything about the situation at Harvey this past Friday? Also, why the school was not in a lock down..I heard there was not a lock down maybe this is a rumor as well. What is the School Board Policy on a situation like this.I heard the administration didn't believe it was true so they weren't going to do anything about it but parents started calling the school . What do you know?

Wow, someone actually had the guts to say it. YES the treasurer is right. Ask any superintendent in the state and they don't want this bill to pass because it will COST districts more money. You have to read the fine print of this 300+ page bill. On the surface employees will pay 15% in healthcare (many lake county districts already do, or are very close to 15%) and that sounds like it will save money, but there is so much more to this bill that costs districts money.

To answer your question, the law is only for union members but will have a trickle down (or up) affect on every employee.

There was a very good article in the PD yesterday about this very subject.

In all honesty, every account I have heard of this bill does NOT actually save money. The referendum is being presented that it does, but it does not. Nor does it create jobs.

I work for the government, and am part of a union, and pay 20% of my health insurance costs. I fully support the merit-based pay and the ability to lay off regardless of seniority....but the rest of the bill is just too far reaching. In another form, I would support this, but not in it's current state.

3:22 Less then you probably do. I believe the administration did inform parents at Harvey but presently all I'm hearing seem to be rumors. It's the obligation of the district to inform us of the situation.

Watched the City Club Forum on WVIZ last night. Dennis Eckert was the Democratic voice on SB5. Not sure if it's on the web but well worth the time to watch if anyone is having trouble figuring out what the ramifications of SB 5 will have to small communities. Also Eckert would be a good local source to ask questions.

5:59 spoken like a true teacher. You just don't want to give up the cushy life you have had for years. You will still have it better than most of us. Your benefits are paid for by me, and my pay has been cut and I pay more for my insurance and you are not paying my pension. IT is time for you to enter the real world.

Like to see you get threatend.
Like to see you teach 30 kids.
After you pay for your college.

hey 5:15, public workers do pay for their health insurance and surprise, surprise, they do pay into their retirement. They DON'T get Social Security. In fact, if a spouse dies, they can not collect their spouses social security and their pension. They forfit the social security that their spouse paid into. Also, if they went into the public sector as a second career, they forfit any money that they already paid into social security. I should know, I paid a good chunk of money into social security that I will never be able to collect now that I work in the public sector. It's called offset-windfall and you don't hear me complaining that you can collect social security that I paid for you!

9:33- add to the list getting punched, kicked and chairs thrown at you....oh, and thats working with 6-7 year olds.

I paid for my own college. I may not be a teacher but I have a very stressful job working 60 hours a week and am salaried so no overtime. And I do not get summers off to relax or take a summer job to help pay my bills. And I know retired teachers who themselves have told me they collect Social Security on the jobs they held while a teacher, so not sure what you are whining about. So quit whining. BTW, Painesville City pays your college loans if you stay in the system for just a few years. Sounds like a good deal to me. I'm still paying my college loans 15 years later.

Painesville city does not pay college loans not matter how long you work for them. They do give a 100.00 extra for those with a degree, thats it. I went to college and worked for the city and paid my own loans off not the tax payers. Whe I started I made 3.35 an hour and paid 10% pf ,y wages into retirement. I have since retirned and now pay 800.00 a month for just basic health care and perscription coverage only. It an 80% 20% plan with a 1500.00 deductable. sound like your paying for my benifits right

9:43am, were you a teacher? Painesville City does pay college loans for teachers. I know some who have had this done. Not for all city workers, I'm talking teachers. The school system pays the college loans. And if you go for your masters while you are teaching they will pay for that schooling.

I find this statement to be very hard to believe. You have almost a total staff of new or young teachers. Their starting wage would be nearly half (or less)of what any administrator makes which is on the average of $90,000 and higher.
What this bill will stop would be that of administration making all the decisions. If you have a great administrator, then you will have a great leader and the decisions will be in the best interest of everyone. If you have a poor administrator-which we seem to have many in our local schools- you will see some very bad decisions being made. There are many very bad parts to this bill that you have to read to find.
As a teacher, I put in many hours a week-way over 40. I also coach and directed a student club. I do not have the possibility to get Social Security and I paid for my TOTAL college expense that included my Masters.
My summers were spent in classes at my own expense and caring for my family. Although some teachers receive a paycheck over the summer, this is for the time they have already worked. We never got paid for summers our checks were spread over the summer instead.
My sister with a 2 year degree from Lakeland made more money from the beginning in industry than I did with a 4 year degree. My job never ended at 3:15p.m. and included nights and weekends.
The way I see it S.B.5 would take away the abusive power that people in administration have been using recently!

PLEASE VOTE NO ON ISSUE 2
A YES VOTE, MEANS THAT NO CITY, STATE, COUNTY WORKER, TEACHER, NON TEACHING WORKER, WILL BE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THERE WAGES, INSURANCE, EQUIPMENT, CLASS ROOM SIZES, OR ANYTHING THAT THEY NEED TO DO THE JOBS THEY DO, IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY OR INSURANCE, IT IS ABOUT OTHER THINGS, TO MANY THINGS ARE IN THIS ISSUE, IT IS TO VAGUE, AND IT WILL HURT ALL OF US NOT JUST THE WORKERS.

AND I HOPE THAT MIKE KNOWS THAT THE GUYS THAT KEEP HIS HEAT, AIR CONDITIONING, ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING WORKING IN HIS OFFICE AND THE COURT ROOMS HE WORKS IN, WILL BE BLOCKED FROM DOING SOME OF THE WORK AND/OR NOT HAVE ENOUGH MANPOWER TO DO IT ALL.

P.S. DON'T FORGET THE POLICE THAT GUARD HIS WORK AND THE CUSTODIANS THAT CLEAN HIS OFFICE AND
THE LANDSCAPERS THAT KEEP THE SNOW AND ICE FROM HIS DOOR.

P.S.S THAT GOES FOR EVERYONE NOT JUST MIKE, THINK ABOUT IT.
