"RUNNING ON EMPTY" jackson browne

Well, this coming Saturday at Veterans Park the Tea Party Patriots will have an event.

I will be honest with you from the start... I believe the only reason there even is a Tea Party is because somehow we elected an African-American to the Presidency. Nowhere in the past eight years, with the wars and out of control spending, did anyone seem to have a need for this group. Seems to me Bush drove the truck into a ditch and for almost the next three years Obama has tried to push it out and received little help from the opposition. All this bad stuff has started since he was elected? Right.

Now as far as the Tea Party's standard bearers: Palin, Bachman and this month's flavor of the month, Rick Perry, all seem to want to take us so far to the right that we will soon be next to the kooks on the left. How, after the last ten years, how anyone can still be a loyal Republican or Democrat is beyond me.

The "normal" GOP must now be thinking 'I know how the Dems felt when the Lefties seemed to be running the show.' What did our current Congressman call the new tea party Congressmen; "Knuckle draggers"? This bunch would call Reagan a poor choice for a conservative... too weak and compromising.

Now Perry tells me Social Security is a "Ponzi" scheme. Along with it being unconstitutional and a drag on American freedom. Sorry Ricky. I've been playing the game for over 45 years and you're not going to change the rules now.

Then again, does he have a point? Even a clock is right twice a day. Recently in the September 7,2011 News-Herald there was a tragic story about a 32 year old Mexican national... legally in this country on a passport. Eduardo Sencion who went into an IHOP in Carson City Nevada and shot 12 people, killing three, two of whom were National Guardsmen in uniform. It is unclear if they were the motive or the prime targets..... Now for the rest of the story: Mr.Sencion (who ended by committing suicide) was reported to have mental issues by his family. The attorney who represented him in a bankruptcy hearing listed more then $42,000 in outstanding debt for a car, several credit cards, and some medical expenses. It was reported he had a net worth of $200.00 and $923.00 in disability income, mostly SOCIAL SECURITY.
Forget for a minute the bankruptcy. How in God's name does a non-citizen here on a passport, 32 years old receive Social Security, along with working in his brother's grocery store?

How and why did some bureaucrat give this man a disability check? Hell, I know deserving American citizens who can't get disability, maybe they should get a passport.

Want to know why we're going broke? Screwball ideas such as this. Bureaucrats giving your money away. Medicare fraud, tax loopholes, tax cheats, this might be where the Tea Party should look first.

The tragedy of this story is the dead and wounded people. To a lesser extent giving people with mental issues a government check to stay here ranks somewhere on the "Rick Perry ain't as crazy as I first thought list."

Bankruptcy? Wonder if those credit cards puchased the AK-47 he used on his killing spree?

Then again, we import almost everything else... why not wackos too?

Out of control spending is why the tea party came about. We haven't had any increase in the deficit in the last 2 3/4 years RIGHT.

The biggest problem is instead of listening or learning what the other guy says, we just call him a RACIST, TERRORIST, IGNORANT, ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT. If they happen to disagree with you, they are ALWAYS wrong.

POC vs. school board, city administration.

Term vs rally team.

R's vs D's.

Blacks vs Whites vs Hispanics vs Illegals.

Me vs You.

Most people will bring something of value to the table. It should be interesting how these two groups get along on Saturday. Who will show constraint and who will be doing the shouting. Who will spread false innuendos and who will present another side of an issue. Who will attack and issue and who will attack the person. I think if you look hard enough, you will find members of both parties and even independents attending. Will you be listening or protesting. That will be the problem.

Just look at what happened last weekend. A simple yet moving tribute to our safety forces, military and the ones lost on 9/11 turned into a Bush bashing political debate here. I attended that event and saw members of both parties honoring the fallen. Will that continue this weekend or will we be back to the senseless name calling and political attacks we have become so used to in Painesville and this blog. Kids blame and call the other person names, responsible people try to work together to solve the problem.

term I thought you were more then fair, The deficit was caused by Bush. This guy wants it his way or the highway?
In his last sentence he asks "responsible people try to work together to solve the problems"
When has the Tea Party EVER tried to work with anyone?
What other group is he talking about? No one with half a brain would show up to make this group revelent?

Term, I don't think that the Tea Party started because Obama is black. It's my opinion, that that is just looking for racism that never existed. I think it just simply had to do with the Republicans and who they are. They didn't raise an eyebrow while Bush and the R's took us into a war on lies, nor did they make a sound when Bush and the R's almost collapsed the whole country - literally. But when they saw the D's taking over and having to try to save the country, they had to find a way to take away the blame from the R's and put in on the D's. So when President Obama DID manage to save this country from total collapse - something the historians will tell you was one of the greatest feats of a political leader ever seen - they had to attack somehow. They started in on the deficit, which if it wasn't for the R's would NOT be up like this. This is what needed to be done to save the country. And it worked. It's not totally done yet, but we still have a viable country. So now the Tea Party is there yelling about what a failure Obama is because the deficit is so high, without a mention that it was the R's that caused the problem. The sad thing is that a lot of people believe what they are yelling and are not looking at the facts. Every time the R's get in power they wreck what the D's have accomplished previously. The R's look right PAST the fact that it was Bush who started the stimulus, etc. just before he left us with a collapsing country. The R's have also stopped Obama in every way they can from saving this country even more - anything they can do to make him look bad, even if it means taking down our country.

I feel the same way about the Tea Party now as I did when it was forming. It's based on a lie with people who don't mind lying. So the fact that the Tea Party formed because of the deficit, 1:39, is just as laughable and disgusting to me now as it was then.

1:39,

I see that you didn't directly address Term's point about the eight years of deficit spending during the Bush administration. Why no call for a Tea Party from, say, 2003-2008, when the federal budget was bleeding red in record amounts thanks largely to two wars and a tax cut? Using a straw man retort of not listening to opposing views being the true problem simply serves to evade answering the question - why did a Tea Party form after an African-American became President? It wouldn't have seemed so fishy had Tea Party leaders acknowledged during its nascent stage in early 2009 that the huge deficit, thanks in large part to the bank bailout, was the responsibility of the Bush administration and a spendthrift Congress, controlled by Republicans during most of his two terms. They could have pointed all of this out along with their protest over the impending stimulus legislation created by a Democratic president and Congress. Presenting the problem as a bipartisan creation would have given the movement more credibility. They did not, however; yet I shouldn't be surprised, since it's easier to win people over to a cause by feeding them red meat of rhetorical half-truths (based, in this instance, on bias against one political party, and the more subtle use of race to entice those already angry that a black man was President), than by using truth and facts that would honestly spotlight the budget-busting ways of both parties. It's no wonder that, among the overwhelmingly white people wearing tricorn hats and flying Gadsden flags at Tea Party public events, were the signs of Obama with a Hitler mustache, or depicted as a witch doctor with bones in his nose. The fact that Tea Party leaders didn't make much of an effort to denounce the vile imagery only served to diminish the original intent of their cause - maybe not with people in the movement, but certainly within the media, as well as those who hadn't yet committed to the movement, but were paying attention to see how the Tea Party and their message evolved.

If the Tea Party had refrained from the path they chose to sell their message, and had been truly willing to pin the blame on both parties, I suspect that they would have drawn support from at least some fiscally-conservative/moderate Democrats (yes, there are a few, believe it or not). Instead, they wound up alienating at least half of the nation's voters, and who knows how many independent voters - the ones who have determined the outcome of at least the last three presidential elections. If their actions and words end up helping to cost the GOP nominee what should be a win over a weak incumbent in November 2012, I wonder if the Tea Party leaders will be honest enough to accept that they made a mistake in how they tried to sell their cause?

P.S. - I'm neither a Democrat nor Republican; I don't support most of what both parties advocate these days. I do support, however, fairness, honesty and dignity from politicians and policy advocates across the ideology spectrum. I may not agree with their ideas, but if they present them with facts, without rebuttal of the opposition that employs cheap rhetoric or otherwise ventures off-course from discussion of said ideas, and without using tactics that appeal to the the worst of our base instincts, I can at least respect them. That's why I don't respect the Tea Party.

Term, as per your original post: We have a Mexican national living in this country, receiving Social Security payments from our country (!?) and killing people in an IHOP. And nobody can figure out how to make ends meet in this country. It is insanity. Obama is doing more than anyone else has in stopping Medicare/Medicaid/tax fraud, etc., and they have made a lot of progress, but obviously, then have to keep going. We don't have enough money to take care of our own, and yet we are taking care of probably 40 million illegals and policing the entire world. It's time all the illegals get out, and the rest of the world steps up and helps us more with the rest of the craziness.

Sometimes you hear that the illegals have to stay to support our country and all us older folks. That is such BS, too. I watched a program recently on CSPAN that was put on by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, "The Latino Community and the Economy." A few facts: 40% of the people 18 and younger in this country are non-white (and I am pretty sure they said most of those are Hispanic). There are 3 million jobs that are not filled right now because there are not enough skilled workers. These non-whites (as a whole) will not be able to support or run the country. They will be taking instead of contributing. We're crashing and burning in large part because we are taking care of the whole world, either in our own country with all these illegals, or policing the entire universe.

We have to get the illegals out if our country is going to survive. Nothing illustrates that more than a Mexican national living off of OUR Social Security and killing Americans in an IHOP. I don't care if that guy was here legally or not. We have to get legal immigration under control, too. There are so many ways for people to come into this country legally, and so many are coming every year, that the police can't even keep track of all the different programs. We have to stop being stupid, and we have to insist our leaders clean up this mess - NOW. The majority of the people coming to our country are Mexicans, and if you want to see what they will do to our country, and ARE doing to our country, just go look at Mexico.

The Bush stimulus failed and Obama passed an even bigger stimulus that is even more of a failure. I don't really care about the Tea Party or what precisely their values reflect, but I do know that spending responsibly is a good idea and should not be dismissed just because you refuse to acknowledge that a conservative movement might have some worth to it because you have voted democrat your whole life. I'm being taxed every which way I turn and the deficit is still climbing to almost unimaginable numbers... something is wrong with that and you know it. Obama scored big points in a debate vs. McCain because he said McCain's spending freeze idea was irresponsible because it was like taking a hatchet to a problem that needed a scalpel... well they are both wrong as clearly we need to take a flamethrower to our budget problem. Completely gut the entire thing and get this budget under control, then we can start talking about the importance of school levies, firefighter pensions, etc. again.

First off this story could have happened with any European country Asian country. Yes the majority of the illegals are Mexican.
Now how do you blame them when they hear about all the benefits this country is willing to give non-citizens?
Someone must start to be held accountable, it you notice in America very few times is anyone held accountable. City, State, National. Why is that

2:53: The Bush stimulus did not fail. It had just started when Obama took over. All of this spending had to be done to save our country from total collapse. Nobody wanted to do the spending, nobody likes the spending, but the spending was necessary to save our country. Now that the economy has not picked up as it was hoped it would, more spending has to be done. There's just no way to get around it, and that is why it has to be done. Once the economy is going again, then the deficit can be brought down, and they are starting to do that already. We have to save the country first before we start cutting spending so we have a country to cut spending in.

5:01: Yes, I agree with you. We even give automatic citizenship to any child born here, including if both parents are illegal. It is clear that our government is not stopping the insanity - either the R's or D's - so it really is up the the citizens to get out and demand that the anchor baby bill be changed, or at least stops being misused, and that all the illegals get out.

In your blind support of Obama you are personally gift wrapping this country and handing it over to Mexico.

7:45 You have a point maybe my post jumped to a conclusion. I should have implied that any Democrat who would get elected would have faced with this wrath. Maybe being African-American was just a by-product. At the same time I have had many people stunned that a Black man could become President in their lifetime and are very wary of him because he is Black. As well as African-Americans believing that Obama was going to give them everything. Sorry , the man is President of the United States all of us. Has he made mistakes? Yes he has.
Was he my first choice? No. Would the country been better served if McCain been elected? I don't believe so. Yet I believe there would have been NO Tea Party if a Republican had won. You judge.
I believe the GOP believes the White House somehow belong to their party.
Another example. This stupid light bulb debate we have been having. It has reached back into Congress as will as a talking point in the candidates debate. Who was President when it passed? who was in control of Congress at the same time? If you guessed the GOP on both counts you were right. Now how does this make any sense to scream at it's passing Along with my favorite the unfunded Senior Prescription Bill that has cost this count5ry Billions. Who was President and who was running Congress? Yet ONLY Democrats are socialists. Sorta doesn't make sense.

The Republicans have a great "noise" machine, along with putting it to good use. Mayor Blumberg of New York City maybe right in believing what we saw in the Middle-East taking place in this country. 5% of the population cannot control all the wealth. Along with all these new college graduates who can't find jobs or a future the Republicans are playing with fire. I hope they know what there doing. Telling Americans S.S. Medicare and other social safety nets are going away seems like a losing idea.

7:49: How soon you forget. Bush was going to legalize the illegals, remember? Do you see any R's fighting to get them out? Obama has done more for border security than any other president. He has also deported more illegals than any other president. They are also spearheading the e-verify system to get rid of illegals in our jobs. But now he has stopped most deportations it seems and, yes, the fool wants to legalize them, just like the R's. Apparantly this fight has to be up to us, the citizens, and we had better get out there and do it.

Term, of course the Tea Party wouldn't have been started if a R had won. They are just an anti-Democrat/Obama group. And the only prejudice in voting that took place is blacks voting for Obama just because he is black. I'm white and I voted for him, too, but I had the impression that no matter who he was, if he was black, he had the black vote. That was the only prejudice I saw at that election. And I still think many of the blacks don't get it that the whites that have things(and the blacks that have things) have them because they go to school (at least through high school) and then work their butts off their whole lives.

As for the Tea Party, why aren't they fighting to get the illegals out? I don't understand that at all. If they want them out, then get them out. They have shown that they can organize, but still no organization to get out the illegals. They just want to run around and yell socialism where no socialism exists, and yell all kinds of other stupid things. I wish for once they would do something that doesn't disgust me.

I'm glad to know that the stupid light bulb thing started with the R's. I, too, thought it was the D's, and it's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Well checked in to the "Tea Party Event" at Veterans Park . All I'll say it was a small gathering. about 100 people. Mostly older, I'll get back to that later.
Seems it was to celebrate the Constitution. Where the founding fathers believed power should come from the bottom up? Really.
The main concern of this meeting is the SB 5 not be voted down and it becomes law. Isn't the rights to collective Bargaining somehow guaranteed somewhere in the Constitution?
All you really need are people to bargain as if the government was a business. Quit giving the hose away!
Along with the belief in smaller government. Now do these older senior citizens I viewed at the event, not on a government pension or Social Security, Medicare? Do they understand the concept that smaller government translates to smaller benefits for them? More out of pocket Medicare costs, smaller Social Security checks?
Maybe even a smaller military?
My favorite speech was "we are all Americans here, Democrats, Republicans, Independents." later in his speech " Obama yells pass this Bill I yell Pack your bags, you will be gone a year and a half".
We don't even know who will oppose him yet but already this bunch claims he's history?
If this is all the Tea Party has Good Luck. Weak very Weak.

I just love it when the Republicans scream about the stimulus ... and all this "take our country back" stupidity. Take it back from whom? ... the Democrats that SAVED it after the Republicans collapsed it? And they keep acting as if all the stimulus money is just gone. Really? Much of it came back. A lot of it came back with profit from interest and/or sales of stocks, etc. We are still getting it back big chunk by big chunk. Some I think will be lost, but I'm not sure if we will be behind, and how behind we will be, since they did give out the money in many instances with the idea of recovering the money with a profit in the end. The R's also never mention that Obama saved the car industry in our country - and there are also tons of businesses that are in existence in this country because the automobile manufacturers still are. Actually, I want to correct the above statement. The R's DO mention that he saved the automobile industry, but they always say that that was the wrong thing to do. Anyone that can say that is not very bright. I personally am still mad as hell that he said he would not let GM default and then he pushed them into bankruptcy, wiping out the stocks I didn't sell because he promised that they would not default, but that's a story for another day ...

The unemployment benefits are money that is gone forever, but I didn't see any Republicans refusing those benefits. I did see, however, Republicans delaying those benefits at least two times to make erroneous political points while Americans desperately needed them to survive. And what worse shape would our economy be in if those benefits had not been paid?

I also didn't see any Republicans refusing the Social Security raise a few years back that was higher than normal from Obama, but I sure DO hear them screaming about a LACK of a raise since then.

They scream and scream words like "socialism" and "take our country back" while the Democrats continue to undo the damage they did and continue, inspite of all the oposition and propoganda by the Republicans, to save our country. The Tea Party is just one big, ridiculous temper tantrum as far as I am concerned.

DETROIT (AP) -- The United Auto Workers union won $5,000 signing bonuses and the possibility of sweeter profit-sharing checks as part of a new four-year contract with General Motors Co., two people briefed on the talks said Saturday.

The deal, which was reached late Friday, also includes a $2- to $3-per-hour pay raise for entry-level workers over the life of the contract and guarantees more union jobs, the people said.

In addition to the bonuses, workers could get profit-sharing checks that exceed the $4,000 that workers earned last year.

Our taxpayer funded stimulus program at work. Tell me again about unions, colective bargaining and SB 5. It was to save jobs not for increased bonus' and pay raises the rest of us taxpayers aren't seeing. Looks to me like we are adding unions to the entitlement programs.

Sorry, I'm against stimulating the unions at the taxpayers expense. Tell me you union members, ready to spread the wealth to me? Feed me? House me? Have to spend that bonus money somewhere.

Term must be expecting his own stimulus money coming his way or he would be fighting this like he does everyone else who wants more tax money from him. Opps, he's a union man. Scr*w the taxpayer.

8:56 I will treat you accordingly. I have nothing to do with the UAW, but you are so wrong on this one, I believe my answer will clear some of thias up for you. Who did the UAW agree to terms with? Ford Motor Company. How much stimulus money did Ford accept from the Obama Administration? Answer None. As part of the agreement with GM and Chrysler the unions can NOT go on strike. Why is management giving them a bonus? Maybe because they knew it took sacfifice from not only them but the unions.
The taxpapers had nothing to do with this contract. Please get your facts before you try to discredit me.
On another thought won't those workers pay taxes on those bonuses.
Remember all Republicans leaders didn't want to save the American Automobile Industry? Yet with the stimulus it's seems to have flourished and the money is being payed back to the treasury.
Keep destroying the middle class and you will have a civil war about class warfare this country. Check the disparity between workers and upper management. Theres the problem.
One argument no one can bring here was the financial crisis our country finds itself in caused by people on Social Security, Unions, Firefighter, teachers?

Sorry Term. It is GM. $4,000 last year and $5,000 this year. That's close to 500 million dollars in bonus' for just the rank and file workers. This after receiving a government bailout. Don't even get me started on the donors from Lightsquare and Solyndra bankruptcy. The latter is another 535 million dollars lost. Over 20 visits to the White House, 4 in the last weeks and 1.7 million spent on lobbying. Seems the companies investors get paid back before the taxpayer on this loan.

Our taxpayer money well invested by whom? Our government in action.

This is 5:56 to 7:51: You said the last COLA was in 2008. You also said that Obama didn't take office until January of 2009, and there has been no COLA in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

According to ssa.gov/cola/automatic-cola.htm, the last COLA was in 2009, and it was 5.8%. Since he won the election in November 2008, I remember that this came from him. I also remember that he gave people 250.00 checks for one or two of the years that there were no COLA raises. I am pretty sure that I am the one that is correct. I also believe that he tried to give 250.00 in another year that the Republicans in power blocked. Again, I doubt that any of the potential Repupublican recipients turned down any of this money, or would have turned down any additional money.

If the Tea Party wants to make sure we follow the Constitution, then let them get the illegals out.

6:48 I did answer your question, you just don't understand the answer. Complain all you want, why not sit down and discuss this? Hate Republicans? are you crazy? I didn't agree with you so I must hate you? Real clear thinking. Come out of the shaddows.

No, you said Ford got a new contract. It is GM and they are giving bonus'. Your answer was wrong.

What I meant to say was that Ford workers would be the only ones who the UAW could strike because Ford never accepted stimulus money. There is no one holding GM hostage they made money and the upper management as well as stockholders want to share the rewards. It's call the American way. Well up until atleast a few years ago.

300? Your dreaming just look at the News-Herald video. Where were the tea bag hats? Along with the colonial ones? You people are a joke and really American voters know it.

That's right, 12:24. We bailed out GM to keep them from going away forever. It was successful. Now they are an independent company (I am pretty sure they have finished paying us back) doing what they want to do in America. Just as it should be. Them giving bonuses has nothing to do with the taxpayer or the government anymore. The bailout worked for them and America. They are now back to being an independent, successful American company - a superior feat of wisdom and success carried out by the Democrats inspite of the Republicans.

4:10, you are mistaken. Polls are showing the rapid growth of tea party members. We are not a joke. We have everyone running scared because of our growing power and influence. You have to resort to degrading us verbally, but it isn't working. You are the one dreaming. And, yes, a head count was taken and no children were counted. Deal with it. We are here to stay and we are growing in numbers.

6:21: I sincerely doubt that the Tea Party will grow beyond Republicans. It's a Republican anti-Democrats/Obama group that is greatly hurting America, just as Republicans almost always do. I believe more and more people who were interested at first are seeing just who the Republicans and the Tea Party are and how badly they are hurting America and Americans. It's just one big sour-grapes-the-Democrats-won group, that is willing to take down America to make sure the Democrats can't accomplish anything good for our country. So, yes, don't worry - most of us know exactly what your group represents and exactly who you people are. As I said previously, I think the Tea Party is just one big, bad-for-America temper tantrum carried on by very immature people who are very dangerous for America and have already done great harm to our nation and to our nation's people.

6:20

The bailout loan was only part of the deal. The government also took 60% interest in the new GM in the form of stock. So how many billions will we lose on that deal. Stocks aren't exactly skyrocketing now. In fact, GM stock has lost around 30% in the last year alone.

I still question the need for a bailout if they can turn a profit in such a short time. The Democrats had nothing to do with running the company so why would they get the credit? Also, why would they try and maybe succeed in refusing to honor warrantees from the "Old GM"

And, why didn't Ford need money. They made the necessary decisions to not need a bailout. So if I spend my money foolishly, do I get a bailout? Complain about big salaries in wall street. I'm sure the car industry has some big salaries too. Add to that, the union leadership's salaries, one can only want answers to this question. Between questionable green energy investments and such a rapid return to profit by GM in this economy, it raises a few red flags. Taxpayer money must be spent with safety.

Term, has a right to question the city on it's investments. Well I have a right to question my Federal Government too. Call me all the names you want, but that is my responsibility as an American citizen and taxpayer.

Right on, 6:46: The Republicans have used their "trickle-down" economics for decades. For decades it has taken down America and Americans. And now that their same policies almost collapsed our entire country under Bush, what are they doing? ...Well, they are fighting for more of their same "trickle-down" economic policies. Here's some news for them ----- it doesn't work. It has never worked in the past, and it will not work now. WE get that, now YOU get that. How dumb can you get? It's more of the same and it just doesn't work. Never has and never will.

To 6:21 and the Tea Party. Do you even have any idea how misinformed and ridiculous it is to be screaming about the deficit completely out of context with what is going on in the whole of the United States of America? America almost collapsed. The deficit saved her. Get informed and do something useful. You people are hurting America.

Knock off your talk-radio conspiracy theories, 9:28. Here's a nice little tidbit for ya -- BUSH started the GM bailouts!!!!! With his presidency almost over in Dec. 2008, Bush started the bailout of GM and Chrysler. He also agreed to invest another $7.5 billion in GMAC and Chrysler Financial LLC. Last November, he defended his decisions for the bailouts saying he "had to safeguard American workers and families from a widespread collapse."

He said that the economy was extremely fragile, and his economic advisers had warned that the immediate bankruptcy of the Big Three could cost more than a million jobs, decrease tax revenues by $150 billion and set back America's GDP by hundreds of billions of dollars.

And Cheney supported the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program initially designed to help struggling banks. He said that providing sufficient support to avoid the collapse of our banking system was something only the federal government could do.

So how do you like that? You and your Republican Tea Party buddies are HURTING AMERICA. KNOCK IT OFF. Stupid people running around saying stupid things, and you DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

8:55: A whole new perspective on the Tea Party? A whole new "refreshing" perspective on the Tea Party? I've already seen the Tea Party and who they are, what they do to America, and what they are willing to do to America to gain points for Republicans. Got it. No thanks.

Tell me why unions aren't just for union leaders.

All it took to give nearly two dozen labor leaders from Chicago a windfall worth millions was a few tweaks to a handful of sentences in the state's lengthy pension code.

The changes became law with no public debate among state legislators and, more importantly, no cost analysis.

Twenty years later, 23 retired union officials from Chicago stand to collect about $56 million from two ailing city pension funds thanks to the changes, a Tribune/WGN-TV investigation found.

Because the law bases the city pensions on the labor leaders' union salaries, they are reaping retirement benefits that far outstrip the modest salaries they made as city employees. On average, their pensions are nearly three times higher than what the typical retired city worker receives.
