"DENIAL OZZMOSIS " ozzy osbourne

As I left last night’s school board meeting, someone mentioned that I didn’t even take notes. I responded, “You’re right, but didn’t you hear… everything’s fine!”

Nearly 50 residents attended last night’s meeting. Most were concerned with the situation (or non-situation) at Harvey. One big question is ‘whose facts are right and whose facts are wrong?’

At the very beginning, the first guest speaker was reminded not to use people's names…. well she slipped in the first minute so we all knew she was talking about former teacher Ross Grippi. I have made it a point to leave many comments off this blog if for no other reason than I can't prove them or they have nothing to do with the subject.

As always, in Painesville fashion, the problem is never attacked first, but the person who brings this to the public is the villain. Destroy the messenger, who cares about his facts, whether real or unreal.

Then another person gets up with his graphs and charts. For such an accomplished person he failed to pass them around or even tell us where these facts can be found. One chart I wish I could have seen is how many Harvey graduates go on to college and get an Associate, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree. Let us compare PCLS to other districts. I am tired of hearing about Ashtabula schools, could we aim a little higher please!

Even being the underachiever that I am, I will at least tell you where my facts come from.

An elderly person in the audience mentioned ‘if this was a corporation you all would have been fired by now.’ I guess he is wondering how many years can you be in continuous improvement before you have to show real improvement? I would like an answer to that myself.

I made the mistake of mentioning Ms. Martin’s next monthly meeting to be held September 29th. Mr. Dillard said NO NAMES or he would end this now. O.K., so I guess some unnamed person will have a meeting on that day.

Next came the administration and board’s answer to last month’s comment section.
The first comment I remember by the administration was regarding the teacher who had managed to get 87% of her tenth graders to past the math portion of the equivalency test. They added that ‘yes, that was true, but her scores for her 11th and 12th graders dragged down her total scores.’ You have to wonder why. Due to confidentiality laws, they would not discuss why she was not re-hired….and as a side-note: in the first three years of any teacher’s contract, they do not have to give any reason for dismissal…so we still really do not know why.

Board member Reverend Gerald Kalb, who I view as one of the most honest people I know, read the Painesville City manager and police chief’s analysis of the situation at Harvey. Yes, there were 86 fights, 18 assaults and 68 minor disturbances that I guess must happen in every high school. Ninety-nine percent of all discipline problems at Harvey are caused by approximately twenty-two percent of the students.

Here is what I came away with: Dr Hanlon has invited anybody to meet him at 7 AM at the high school, he’ll buy the coffee. There is only one way I can honestly tell you if there is a problem or not… personally, I don’t want to take the guided tour, I would like to take a few days off from work and spend that time shadowing the SRO officer at the High School…not for a selected hour or two but for a full two or three days. I will even be willing to do this after the November election and I will promise everyone that reads this blog that I will print exactly what I see….good or bad. My guess is the school administration will stall this for some reason or another (insurance, confidentiality etc.) but I can think of no other way for me to find out the truth. I have heard from too many people that I trust and respect that there are very real problems. I would give them an unbiased view of what is really going on at the high school. I will make this offer in a letter to the Board of Education and the school administration. The ball is in their court.

If there was a positive out of last night’s meeting, it is good to see that many residents are looking for answers.

I did state all the data was compiled from the Ohio report card website. I am also willing to share the details at your next oversite meeting.

I also stated that we as a community should not be satisfied with the results. We should be teaching our children to never be satisfied to always strive to be better.

I also stated this can only be accomplished by ALL of us working together.

The success of our youth and our community is a stake. Let's stop the mud slinging and get to work!!!!!!

To MS: I know that you are truly concerned about the quality of education and we have that in common. If you would forward the list and/or link to me I will be happy to post that data here so that anyone interested that didn't attend the meeting can see it. I will post when the next POC meeting is and I am sure everyone will be interested to hear from you.

I am truly concerned about individual agendas and vendettas, first and foremost. These types of diseases only add to the negative perceptions of Painesville City. My sole purpose for attending the meeting was to convince members of the community that we need to work with the schools, the students and the staff to improve in areas of weakness. The social, demographic, and economic challenges we are face with weren't built over night and won't be fixed overnight.

I am willing to invest my time in constructive dialogue with whoever necessary to propose positive solutions.

Let me also make it extremely clear.......there is a way to hold the school board accountable. However, it is not through slander and intimidation.

I hope all who are reading this will join in the effort to drive positive results.

MS Really where was the slander and intimidation coming from?
I thought it was coming from the audience?
I don't have to defend the messenger he has more then enough backbone to stand his ground. Along with his answer if all these alligations are true I would have been fired. If they are true and he wasn't fired who do we blame?
All he has done is make the Painesville community aware of a problem. It was in the same vein as Reverend Coffee's view of the CVC and member schools. Should we have all attack him also for informing us?
I have sent an email to Dr. Hanlon to spend a few days at Harvey I wish you would do the same.
Let's find out for ourselves. One person has already told me I have a better chance of spending a couple of day's in Area 51? I guess will find out?
Let's invest some time for the sake of Painesvilles students?

Angelo,

I am not trying to be a jerk. However, if you have the time and talent to consistently write blogs, go to meetings, and now spend two days at Harvey....just maybe you have the time utilize your talents to mentor or tutor a student in need.

4:11...didn't take it the wrong way...it's a good question. I attended a Townhall meeting put on by Andy Flock where members of the school administration were the guest speakers. That was a suggestion that came up and several of us immediately volunteered. Mr Dillard promised to get back to me....that was over a year ago. I'll bring it up again.

Are you allowed to post the name of the teacher who was dismissed on your site? I am curious as I could not figure it out in the meeting minutes. Something else to consider when visiting the school is they will let you go where they want and see what they want you to see. Ask how some teacher evaluations are handled when a disruptive student is in the classroom. FYI: The disruptive student is kept out of the classroom during the eval, thus teacher gets a good one when not having to deal with the problem student. Make sense?

New to this site. What's with the song titles and the artist that recorded them? Some are funny and some titles make no sense.

1 Dillard and Hanlon must go!
2 Based on what was said during the meeting, it would be a disgrace for Grippi to be a member of the board....retire...travel....just go!!!
3 Let's see what Mrs Martin can do with a new superintendent.....a good one!!!!

Just an FYI for those who didn't take Dr. Hanlon up on his offer. I and few others showed up the next day at 7 a.m.We watched the students enter the building and head to class. There were stragglers as expected. There were kids being kids. Maybe it was too early in the a.m. to act up. Maybe they were acting up in the broom closets or the kitchen. I didn't see chaos and mayhem. And i didn't see kids behaving especially well because of Dr. Hanlon. So while I am sure there are kids acting up or planning on acting up when they woke up I saw a typical high school. I didn't walk in fear. I would suggest everyone get up there to see for themselves. I'm heading to the middle school next.

Just got tired of using the same old same old. It's not a newspaper. Then I remembered one of my favorite movies Forrest Gump.
Remember how songs played into scenes of the movie? Everytime I heard one of those songs it reminded me of the movie. Some times a song has lyrics that I'm talking about such as "tell me" I know it's really not very important.

Hanlon said he starts his day off at the high school everyday..."meet me there at 7am". Well, I didn't see him there Tuesday or Wednesday. How many strikes does this gut get???????
