"LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS" joe cocker

Some of you by now have seen the construction work on Mentor Ave. from Wood St. to just west of Lake Erie College. You might even be wondering what the hold-up might be? Well, as best as I can piece together, Orwell Gas has run a gas line down Mentor Ave. between just west of the YMCA to Wood St.
Now the rub... they have installed a regulator west of the YMCA where it happened that the fence doesn't meet Painesville code. That can be easily worked out, but Orwell Gas has purchased a Century Historical home west of the College to put another fenced in regulator in the front yard. They then intend to rent the house out. So much for Mentor Ave. Historical District. [Nice signs by the way.} I understand the College doesn't want this eyesore on their property so it's next door at 521 Mentor Ave. Again, is this another violation of Painesville City Code?
My question: where is the present regulators for the college located? Well... they can be seen just west of Ardmore and Park Ave. where they intersect Walnut St on college property.
I am for free enterprise but what kind of hocus-pokus is going on here?
Why wasn't any of this discussed with the city before the zoning board had to be involved? One guess where this gas is coming from. Along with my question "A little Help From My Friend?"
I tried to look up the minutes for the last couple of months for the Zoning Board, maybe some of you will have better luck then me...or did anyone out there attend and are able to shed some light?

You should see the crap that is going on in the south end, by Dominion Gas Co.,with there 3 miles of gas line replacement, as far as I can see no city inspectors have been on this project, they have damanged peoples property, and they tried to repair it but it is not like it was before they started, they even cut the wires that control the traffic lights, and try walking down the new sidewalk it slants all over the place, if you walk at night you can fall it is so bad, they back filled peoples yards with the dirt they took out from under the sidewalks, it is bad, real bad.

Call Lynn, Rita's sec. at city hall and have her send you a copy of the minutes on the decision they made in regards to zoning and or you can go to city hall and request the minutes for review and a copy for your records.

The city inspectors probably don't have a clue what Dominion Gas is doing. Their forte is handrails, water heaters anything a resident might do to make their property look better or safer. These are some of the rudess people in town with no clue on the true meaning of their job.. Wonder if the police had to get a permit for the work they did this week on their State St. building?

Hope they grant the gas co. request. So then finally I can go to thec zoning board and request a 6 ft. fence on my front yard. Why them and not me?

To 5:09: There IS no "councilwoman" Becks. That is a total misrepresentation. You are not an elected official of this city, so how dare you represent yourself as one?

5:09 I thought the same thing. Except I hear politicans called Mayor, Senator, Congressman, whatever all the time.
To clarify maybe it should read "former councilwoman"
ie. Senator Santorium is running for President.

City of Painesville is high bidder for Millstone Condominiums
Published: Monday, June 27, 2011

TRead@News-Herald.com

Members of the Millstone Condominium Association clapped and cheered Monday after the city of Painesville was the high bidder to buy the flooded-out property.

Donald Richer, attorney for corporate entity unit holder 270 Main Street, made the minimum bid of $130,000.

Then Doug Lewis, Painesville’s assistant city manager, immediately made the winning bid of $2,343,640.66.

“I’m happy for the homeowners,” Lewis said after the auction. “And I’ll be much happier when we finally get it closed out as far as the payments to the residents. We will be working with the courts as far as the payouts are concerned.”

Unit holders waited five years for the public auction that was held in the lobby of Lake County Common Pleas Court in Painesville.

“I think this will be a merry Christmas,” said Dan Nicholson, president of the condo association. “I appreciate everything the state and the city have done. It’s going to make most of the residents happy. Unfortunately, we have had a few residents that have passed away since this whole thing started. This has been tough on everybody for a long time. Some people have issues other than a place to live.”

On July 28, 2006, the Chagrin and Grand rivers burst beyond their banks — burying some parts of the county under up to 8 feet of water.

In January, Judge Richard L. Collins Jr. ruled the entire property must be sold at a public sale at not less than two-thirds of the $195,000 appraised value.

The city has been unable to tear down the 38 decaying units because of ongoing legal action between 270 Main Street and the condo association.

City officials had to buy the property at its pre-flood value because of conditions of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant. The purchase was made possible through a $3.5 million FEMA grant. Continued...

After the property is demolished, city officials hope to turn the land into a park.

Richer’s client wanted to buy the land to restore and rebuild the condos.

Last week, Collins agreed to stop the sale as long as 270 Main Street came up with a bond of more than $2.3 million made payable to the co-tenants of the Millstone property by 10 a.m. Monday.

When that didn’t happen, the sale was allowed to proceed as scheduled.

However, the demolition of the condos is not a done deal.

An appeal remains pending before the Warren-based 11th District Court of Appeals on whether Collins erred by allowing a sale by public rather than private auction.

Meanwhile, the city must provide proof that all 38 liens have been cleared by the banks before any money can be paid out to residents.

It was unclear Monday how long that process might take.

Still, Steve Ferryman of the Ohio EMA called Monday’s sale good news for residents.

“It’s a definite step forward for the city towards mitigating this property and making sure the next time it floods that people and property aren’t in harm’s way,” said Ferryman.

Why are agendas and minutes available on line for all boards except zoning board of appeals?

It does not surprise me that former councilwoman Becks would have the nerve to call herself councilwoman Becks currently, even though she is not in office and has not been for years. That's how nervy she was as a councilwoman, too. Thought she was better than everyone else, and more important. She was useless. Please do not forget this. She is showing us who she is.

4:18...I agree! My landlord replaced most of my front porch (no renovation, just repair) and the very first thing out of the city official's mouth was a snappy "Where's your permit?"....not "My name is..." or "Hello". Someone from the city finally called to apologise after it had escalated into a shouting match. The fellows doing the work were trying to finish as quickly as possible so we weren't inconvenienced but they had to stop work to go pay the permit fee. Meanwhile, I had to climb over a stone wall to get in and out...And the repair guys had a valid question or two....what about the three other porches on this street that are OBVIOUSLY not up to code and/or in need of repair. A lot of high paid talent involved for that 25.00 and it sure left a bad taste in my mouth.

Hey 5:17am, try $125.00 for not getting the permit before starting work, and your landlord should have got a permit, just like everyone has too, most landlords try to cut cost.

This is 5:17....maybe he should have gotten the permit first...I'm not arguing that point. I was agreeing with the other poster that city employees are rude. Those boys were just doing a job and didn't deserve to be treated like that from a city employee. And I would still like to know why the city DROVE PAST obvious violations a half-a-dozen times to get here.
