"BRILLIANT DISGUISE" bruce springsteen

For you who may not realize it, today is General Paine Day in Painesville. If you had an extra twenty you could have had breakfast this morning at Jalapeno Loco to celebrate 265 years of General Paine. I have only suffered through sixty years of it.
Remember. this is not Private Paine Day or Major Paine Day, its General Paine Day here in my hometown.
Honestly, tell me, are our best Painesville years behind us or ahead of us?
Have we had too much 'paine' or not enough?

"tell me are our best Painesville years behind us or ahead of us?"

That depends who you are. A lot of the people that post here are pessimists who will tell you they are behind us. A few that post here are optimists that believe we are getting better and they are ahead of us.

For you Term, I would guess you believe they are behind us.

Please, what do you optimists see that I must be missing?
Yes your probably right I may be a pessimist honestly I hope I'm wrong.

Yes,I got so many emails from Doug Nagy I lost count! Fine Dougie but I would have rather had emails alerting the fine residents to the boy scout breakfasts!

Why just JL? We attended the boy scout breakfast last Sunday and it was great. Great group of people supporting the local community.
Sat with the coach for the swimming team at the "Y", young guy, great family. He had so many questions about what the heck is going on in this city. Also has a young family and worried about the schools, not sure he wants to put his kids in our school system. Several around the table agreed with his concerns, me too.

There is another boy scout breakfast in Feb. At the Methodist church on the square.
Instead of yelling Reba Reba, start yelling Rita Rita!

Tell the young family guy that all the old and cheap people in Painesville will never support the schools.Please...Please move because the schools have the biggest effect on what kind of people move into this city.Tell him to move to Delphos Ohio and attend the best elementary school.. bite the bullet and commute to work!

7:55 Tell the young family guy that the old and cheap people in Painesville have always supported their schools. Who in Lake County pays higher property taxes to fund their schools?
The reward for all this spending? The lowest test scores, along with a 65% graduation rate, worse the county, and most administrators living outside the district, why? They know better.
God forbid if the people in Painesville ask for any accountability.

I think people miss the point that any city as old as Painesville will have its ups and downs periods.

I just wonder are we at the bottom and heading into an up period or do we have a little farther to go down.

History will always show you that the politicians in charge were responsible for what happened in given periods. Why did we get the influx of hispanics and not Geneva, or Ashtabula, or even madison?

I think people will look back at History and realize the era of Hada, Horvath, Delamotte, Hach, etc. was an era that took us into a down cycle because they had no vision of our future.

The key for Painesville is will the people wake up and quit voting "popularity" and start voting for people who will get the job done.

If the illegals are not removed ASAP, then this will be a Mexican city soon enough, and that will be the end of it as we know it. And based on what they do in cities in America and Mexico, it will be horrible, and it will spread from there. We have Horvath, McMahon, Hada, Hach, Delamotte and Fountain to blame for this.

At January 27, 2011 at 3:23 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Sorry 2:11, we are all to blame when did we as a community ever mention to the above leaders that we were against the influx of illegals into Painesville? This includes myself.
We were all apathetic to what was going on. Either to lazy or unconcerned what was happening. This apathy still is strong in Painesville, when and how we chose our leaders and administrators.

At January 27, 2011 at 4:51 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is 2:11 for Term. I was one of the ones who fought hard, and enough people fought hard enough to stop the advertising of our city by our city leaders as welcoming to the illegals, i.e., a sanctuary city. You are right about the apathy now, however. We need the whole city to stand up and demand that the illegals are run out of our city. And it will take the whole city to do it. I also disagree with you that we cannot blame the leaders. They were the ones (Horvath) writing letters to government officials telling them we liked our illegals here in Painesville, and we wanted nothing done about the problem. The others I mentioned were just as guilty as he was for going along with it. And they are still not doing anything about getting them out. I see nothing but welcome signs for the illegals here.

I have a good friend who is here legally, had a very nice house and his kids were in the pc schools. He was so disgusted with what was going on here he moved to Chardon. Chew on that one and then tell me we don't need a shake down at the top and the school board!

Do any of you believe Ms. McMahon or Dr. Hanlon have a love or even affection for Painesville?
We were just a stepping stone in their climb to the top. Problem was Painesville became a dead end for both their career's.

I think this whole school thing, starting from when they decided to build all new schools at the same time, instead of a responsible one-at-a-time approach, is deplorable. I think they (McMahon, Hada, Horvath, Fountain, Delamotte, Hach) decided they needed the illegals here for federal money they would bring for these shiny, new schools. Add the 50% grading policy, WHICH NOBODY IS DOING ANYTHING TO STOP, and you have one big mess. Gee, who could have guessed?

As far as I'm concerned, they can get the illegals out, consolidate a couple of schools temporarily if they have to, and stop the 50% policy. Without these changes, pretty soon nobody will want to educate their children here, except for the illegals. Our town will continue to go down along with our property values.

I did not want all the schools done at one time, and worked to stop it. What is happening is exactly what I thought would happen, along with my taxes being too high for them. They should have done the worst one first, and when that one was payed off, tackle the second one.

Everything has come together in this town now to create the perfect storm. We need to get rid of the people in the schools and the ones running our city that have done this to our city and to our children.

Most of the Hispanics here in Painesville are here legally.
You Racists want to blame innocent people.

To 7:13: Are you kidding me?! I can guarantee you that almost none of the Hispanics in this town are here legally. You can call me whatever you want, but I have the right to have only people who are here legally in my country, and the government has the job of getting everyone who is here illegally out. Now. And I couldn't care less what you call me.

And let me tell you something else. Calling the illegals illegal is a whole lot better than what the illegals call us. And one more thing - what do you think we should be feeling about people who are illegally overrunning our country and demanding rights in the process.

Don't even pretend that Mexico or any other Spanish country would be letting Americans do this to THEIR country.

Have you not seen the families of Hispanics shopping at Marc's and Walmart?
Count the children -multiples 3,4,5,6 kids! Those are legal "anchor babies" who grow up and add again and again to their family. So, gosh forbid the parental unit gets deported and those "poor" babies have no family in the USA anymore. Then they all should go too.
Painesville City needs to wise up and get us a Super Target, Kmart or Walmart. Imagine all the revenue that will come with the building and sales generated by these people. If they wont leave we should at least be making a profit.

Wolverine, I have no idea how long you have lived in Painesville? From as far back as I can remember I have watched a steady decline of the quality of life in Painesville.I do not consider myself a martyr, and have no intention of grabbing a few of my friends and moving out.
Many of the changes were brought by people who might have had good intentions but just spedup the decline. [Urban Renewal]
Now I watch as a city and school admininistration go through the motions of presenting good things for Painesville. We're stuck with each other for sometime I think? [try selling your home] The whole county has advanced in the last 60 years all except ONE community. Can you help me explain that?

Has the whole county advanced?
Unfortunately we have one thing no one else has: the county seat. Where everyone brings all their baggage.
This in itself has brought many problems, the poor, troubled and homeless to name a few.
And since you do not consider yourself a pain/Paine loving person or a martyr I think you are just a curmudgeon.

You, Wolverine are a panglossian, how do you like our school ratings, how about the general condition of our streets? the opportunities to shop downtown Painesville, your property value?Nice addition to that hospital you use in downtown Painesville uh?
You keep looking through those glasses and calling me misanthropic, instead of questioning the people in charge. No stomach for that uh?

Talk about going down hill. How about the shooting in Painesville on Liberty Street. Someone tried to break into a car and the owner shot him and the car. Shooter was arrested and charged with a felony. Read the comments in the NewsHerald article.

Hope those people don't live here. Anyone who has a concealed carry permit knows you can't shoot someone unless they threaten your life or someone else's. Never can you shoot someone to only protect your property. Now we have punks and idiots to go along with the drug dealers and our illegal immigration problem.

So how many here think he was justified in shooting the person trying to break into his car. Doesn't make me feel safe knowing people are out shooting wildly at a car and a thief. Wonder if there could have been another bullet that hit a house or something. Could have been much worse.

Community center, pool and ice rink? Really? Dont you think there are more important places to spend money? I do, especially when this entire country is in trouble, not only Painesvile. Those fluff things should be so far down on the priority list.
Would you vote for a tax increase for a pool? I didnt think so.

At January 30, 2011 at 8:13 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, so many more things to do. Like lets keep the tax cuts for the top 5%, along with Republicans voting against a law to refuse government contracts to U.S. businesses that outsource jobs overseas.
We are the only city in Lake County without a quality community center or a pool.

Hey Wolverine...I WOULD vote for a bond issue for a pool and a few other amenities that we are sorely lacking. And if we weren't wasting big bucks with AMP - Ohio and buying up flooded condo property maybe we could afford a pool.

You bet would vote for a tax increase for a pool and/or community center.
And I will always vote for a library tax levy.

Our taxes continue to go up and yet I see little for my return. Every year the cemeteries look a little more neglected as do the roads and services.

I will not vote for a school tax levy until the 50 percent grading policy is abolished and the principal of Harvey HS is replaced.

And so it goes here in the city of spainesville.

The senior center is a joke. I wonder if hal's "concerned citizen's" meeting are better attended since he moved them to the morse ave. Community center.

He probably has his little group of 'cheerleaders' that will follow him anywhere but I imagine you are right that attendence would be down. I'm way over Hal but you bring up a very good point about the Senior Center. It's off the beaten path and old. Check out some of the surrounding communities like Mentor or Eastlake..

At February 2, 2011 at 6:27 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, the city talked to the senior center a few years back about figuring out how to build a new one and they said "no thanks", they were fine right where they are.

Not everyone thinks new and bigger is better.

To anonymous 6:59pm, or anyone else who wants to answer.

I investigated the 50% policy and was quite surprised by how much there was involved in it that was designed to "force" students to do work.

So, how many people on here that put it down all the time can actually tell anyone what else is part of it except the "50%" part?

At February 2, 2011 at 7:29 AM , Anonymous REW said...

To 6:30....I did the same research and, although the language and goals are impressive, it is a failed policy. This is a case of instituting a regulation before it has been thoroughly vetted by the educational community; much like the 'new math' in the late sixties/early seventies (I was a victim of that fiasco) and the 'whole word' theory of teaching reading in the eighties that was an attempt to replace phonics. Phonics has made a strong come-back because it works. The 50%policy DOES sound good on paper but just isn't practicable in the real world. When exceptional Harvey graduates are denied admission to good universities due (in part) to this policy you have to wonder what do they know about it that our local administration doesn't? Another issue that I have with it is that it seems to be a part of a bigger trend for 'feel good' education that does not prepare students for real life. My employer doesn't worry about my self-esteem nor does he/she give me more time to complete a job because my first effort was sub-standard. The 50% policy may have a small place in elementary education but not once a student has reached high school age. And finally....if it's such a wonderful thing then why is Painesville's graduation rates dropping instead of going up or, at the very least, staying the same?

I personally don't believe any of you have read it, it is just an easy jump on the wagon item.

At February 5, 2011 at 6:30 PM , Anonymous REW said...

To 4:24....doesn't really matter to me whether you think I've read it or not. All I can tell you (and anyone else that might be interested) is that it is a laudable plan on its face in that it requires a student to actually make up and/or re-do the work until he/she can show a passing grade level of understanding. It is an example of a public policy whose definition is one that potentially benefits everyone and is equally available to everyone. Unfortunately...it is also an example of a failed public policy in that it has done absolutely nothing to halt the slide of the Painesville City schools. Graduation rates continue to drop and we have not improved in any area measured by the state. One of the two passing scores we DID receive is for attendence...not academics. I could go on with many other criticisms such as how is a teacher supposed to implement this policy adequately and still teach the rest of his/her class? Someone will get the short end of the stick...which actually defeats the goal of educating all students fairly and equally. It's a plan meant to insure a student's learning the material but in reality it just keeps marginal students in class at the expense of the rest of the student body. I'm sure funding is part of the hidden equation in why it was implemented in the first place...
So the short answer to you is the whole thing has failed....

At February 5, 2011 at 6:33 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey 4:24...I read some good explanations on the 50 % policy failing....why don't you step up and explain how and why its such a good thing?
