"SOMEONE LIKE YOU..." rod stewart

Downtown Master Plan, Streetscape Plans, Main Street America Plans? We gotta whole lotta plans! Now my question is can we believe or trust these plans? The first plan I remember was the Historic Main Street Plan. That plan was to make the businesses in downtown conform to a turn of the 20th Century look. Now in the latest downtown plan by City Architecture downtown looks like something right out of the Jetsons. How was Veterans Park at the turn of the century and why change the western exit so its in line with Mentor Ave? Doesn't that cut down the size of the park?
We hear numbers thrown around: 350 homes with a mixture of apartments, 85,000 feet of retail business, 97,000 feet of new office space, how in God's name will we fill this plan with people and businesses? Sometimes I believe the leadership of this city must think they have to do something just to show they are involved. I also believe all these "plan" ideas stem from the fact that we lost Lake East Hospital and to turn our attention away from that fact.
How do you lose a hospital?
If there was one business a city should have coveted it was a hospital.
First things first, let's start small. Let's give businesses a real good reason and oppurtunity to fill all of the empty space we have downtown; tax abatements, lower utilities, become business friendly, go after the unique.
I've heard grocery stores [they need alot of parking] A coffeehouse located where it would attract college students as well as residents.
Speaking of the college. THAT is Painesvilles future. Quit treating it like you do.
Education is going to become very big business in the coming years. If Mr.Victor can do what he did with LEC can you imagine what he could do with a downtown? Where was LEC grant for a master plan to take that college where its at?
The city manager seems to believe that to build businesses in Painesville you first must have a captive audience... no... first you give the people some good reasons to live and work near your downtown.

And why did LEC partner with Mentor rather than Painesville for their entrepeneurship program? (9-9-2010 News Herald)

Painesville for as long as I have lived here has always viewed the college as an unwanted step-child for what ever reason I can't figure out.

I watched a councilman ask about cost, along with private sector money for this project. The answer given was all about everything but those two items?

To 6:58 it's probably more like they both view each other that way...but that doesn't have to continue...Lake Erie has made huge strides in increasing enrollment by adding their sports programs and going co-ed. A new administration head has the drive and vision to make things happen. Just guessing but I would imagine that they would be receptive to anything that would enhance the college...LEC is a phenomenal asset that I think the whole county should align themselves more with.

Truth be told Lake Erie College probably wishes it was anywhere in the county but Painesville Cityn.

1. A coffee house is coming to downtown by way of the old ESCO/Artful hands. Yeah!
2. You can lose a hospital the same way a Cleveland may lose a trauma center.
3. How many times, and you don't acknowledge this - a hospital is forbidden to open on the former Lake East land. Forget it. Not Gonna happen there.

Well it seem's the powers the run Lake Health never thought it was important to have a truama center in Lake County, even at the new Tri-Point hospital. We on the other hand lost everything including bedpans in Painesville.
They did move that trauma center to another hospital did they?
Although I agree another hospital was forbidden to open on the former Lake East site, the question should be why? greed maybe, no competition?
Glad to hear a coffee house is coming downtown!

And what about that much-vaunted 'Urgent Care' center that we were promised? I don't think the band-aid station next to Subway qualifies.

To 10:59: Just one more lie from the administration of Painesville. There were people like Term and John R. Murphy right from the beginning that were figting for that and doubting that it was going to happen. They fought hard to save the hospital and once they realized that was a lost cause, they turned their attention to the urgent care center trying to make sure it would happen. They were saying that they didn't believe it would happen, I am pretty sure. Anyway, they were right. We were all lied to again by McMahon and Hada, etc.

A note about electric/water bills from the city. Twice I put my payment in the special payment box behind the police station in plenty of time to be on time, and I got a late fee. Nothing I could do about it. I sure couldn't prove it with a postmark now, could I? Anybody else have this problem?

At November 9, 2010 at 5:30 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've been using the box for probably 11 or 12 years, never once had a problem.

Term ...please let me say that I am not defending the loss of Lake East in any way...I just want to gove you some food for thought. One of the main reasons there is a no-compete clause (or whatever they want to call it) for the former hospital site is that building a hospital is a very expensive proposition and they have to make sure that they can keep as many of their beds full of paying customers as they can. Another medical facility would dilute the market and eventually make both places inefficient and unaffordable. Kind of like when Convenient Food Mart used to be around and they had a rule that stores could not be built closer than one mile to each other. Having two facilities with redundant services in close proximity without the population base to sustain both of them would have ensured the eventual failure of both.

I understand your argument but your competing with yourself. Do you think Open Pantry, or Lawsons followed that rule when there was a Convenient aroud the corner? I always thought Lake Health was a not for profit operation anyway. You do make an undersandable arguement, Thanks. Now where is that promised Urgent Care Center? Another problem with asbestos removal I guess.

Food for thought? Isn't there a new University medical center right next door to the new Lake Hospital complex?

To:TERM They did move that trauma center to another hospital did they? Nooooo, to the best of my knowledge it is on hold and the city of CLE still is trying to talk them out of it.
While I can understand those who are upset, the hospital is a PRIVATE BUSINESS and they have EVERY RIGHT to leave if they so desire, without owing anyone a reason or explanation.

re Lake Erie College, when I was growing up in the 50's-60's a lot of people regarded it as a sort of snobby school for girls from affluent families that seemed (to me at least) as a fallback choice for those who didn't make the cut to attend one of the prestigious Seven Sisters colleges. I don't know if that was really the case, but at least among my acquaintances--North End trash-lol--LEC just seemed so aloof and apart from our experience. I'm glad to see it's becoming more integrated into the greater community. One of my best experiences ever was a class trip from Harvey to hear a string quartet performance by members of the Cleveland Orchestra in Morley Music Hall. I hope this sort of thing is continuing in Painesville. LEC can be a great cultural resource for the whole city and county.

To 5:30: The discussion of the drop box for electric/water bills has been continued on a newer post. It's interesting, however, that you have been using it that long and never had a problem. Very interesting. I am the one, if you were reading the blog a while ago, that was saying that I thought my electric bills get padded. So this is a double-hmmmmm. Thanks for the input.

2:21 am
Did you put your payment in the box 1 or 2 days before it is due ?
If not, try it, dont wait for the day it is due to pay it.

I have never had a prob. with paying it in the box, it is picked up every biz. day around 7-8 am.

Hey my verification word this time is SUCKSFOR, just got to love this blogspot........

To 9:50: This is 2:21. Did you see where I said I put the payment in the box in plenty of time to be on time - and yes, that means days ahead of when it was due. I am certainly not putting it in the box the day it is due and expecting a miracle.

At November 14, 2010 at 4:32 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

How did the city notify you were late? Was it there claim that you deposited the payment late?

At November 14, 2010 at 12:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is 12:45. No, I had a late charge show up on the next bill. Called and said it was absolutely not late, but I had no proof of when I put it in the box. Their word against mine.

At November 15, 2010 at 4:11 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone know how often they empty out the box? I would think it would be every day so they could get the money in the bank right away...but who knows? And is there a process where one person takes care of the payment and someone else logs it in to credit the resident? (GAAP - generally accepted accounting practices). Anyone care to share how long it takes from the time they drop it in the box to when their check is cashed? Just curious.

This is 12:45 again. The reason that I asked the question if anyone else's electric/water/sewer payment was marked late when it was put in the drop box in plenty of time is because I thought that the answer would be no. I am someone who speaks out against the city, and this seemed like just one more thing they could do to me and did. Could have been a coincidence, but I doubt it. Want to thank everyone for their input.

At November 17, 2010 at 3:38 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

12:45 I would hope that wasn't the case. The only problem with putting your payment in the drop box is that theres no record when you did this.
I feel more comfortable dropping it in there then dealing with some employees inside.
