SIGNS,SIGNS, EVERYWHERE.. 5man elec.band

Yeah we got signs and we don't have signs.
First the signs that make little sense to me. Traveling east on Mentor Ave. just past the railroad tracks are three overhead signs. It shows a left turn arrow for the left lane a straight arrow for the center lane and a straight and right hand arrow for the right lane?
First the center lane ends within a 100 feet, where do you turn right with the right turn arrow? I always thought you did that at a street not Pizza Hut?
This is not a big deal for most of us locals but it could cause problems for someone not from the area. Yes Hal there are signs telling people to not block streets coming into Mentor Ave. but its hard to do when you have bumper to bumper traffic from Fern Dr. to Walnut St.
Now I notice a "NEW" Painesville game has begun called "Run The Center Lane". People pull into the center lane at say Lincoln Dr. and run if almost to Chestnut [although most chicken out by Newell St.] There a Black Ford Fusion that runs that center lane with success daily.

Now the signs promoting the 6 mil. Replacement Levy. They would have been better off without the signs reminding the "what levy are you talking about?" citizens. As of Thursday evening I noticed only two city councilmen with "For the Children" signs in their yards. [Hada, Hach] What gives, even a current employee doesn't have a sign along with a former Assistant Superintendent? Hal must have figured a sign might hurt his re-election chances even more? How about our own "Ground Traffic Controller" on Levan Dr., where's her sign?

This along with the usual sign of the times in Painesville. AVAILABLE, FOR SALE, FOR LEASE, FOR RENT.

HERE'S YOUR SIGN

Attended the school board meeting. At the beginning of the meeting Mr. Dillard explained that the BOE was setting up an "Informational Meeting" for people who have concerns and questions about Issue 3. No date was given for this meeting. A word to the board:.... voting has all ready started almost two weeks ago. If you're going to have this meeting it should happen very soon... please.
A couple of very interesting comments made Monday night. First off, Mr. Taylor said "We are all right through 2012". We were also told
"If the levy passes, people should still expect to see cuts" and
"If the levy fails, the BOE will implement severe expenditure cuts".
(Along with asking for a higher millage levy in 2011).
The "Race to the Top" money was discussed: it was explained this money cannot be used in the general fund.
Resolution #10-259 to approve a work-study program between Lake Erie College and Maple Elementary School for the 2010-11 academic year. GREAT IDEA! What about the other two elementary schools?
Resolution #10-266 to approve "Moving Stipend". Now this one I going to have to ask for an explanation.
On a final note nothing that was discussed at the Town Hall Meeting last month was addressed. I have to wonder why?

NOW HERE'S MY SIGN

Since the passing of my father in the early spring I have spent many a day taking my Mom to his grave site. I have grown to appreciate the flowers, the planters and how much time people put in to honor their loved ones final resting site.
Now Painesville "Riverside Cemetery" has signs that explain to people that all summer decorations must be removed my October 1. Well today was the day that the city got around to removing planters, sheppards' hooks, solar lights, balloons as well as artificial flowers. Fine. Now will someone from Parks and Recreation please explain why the city took the time to have city employees dig up all the mums and perennials along with other planted flowers? Now please don't get the idea that my family had planted flowers at my fathers gravestone. We removed our sheppard hook and pots in late September.
I did watch a young mother cry at her daughters grave that her mums had been dug up, along with watching a very irritated man who had just planted flowers at his wife's grave that was going to give the city an "earful". A lot of man hours spent doing what? How about cutting the grass, its pretty high in section 18.
As I drove home the thought that kept going through my head was I expect this city to run a service department, a water department, a light plant along with a waste treatment plant. Heck, these people can't even run a cemetery.

Maybe the above know something we don't? This city can't afford another levy? Hada doesn't pay much in city income tax so he's for any tax.

Nice job, you just made sure there would be at least ten more signs on Monday.

News-Herald thinks the Lakeland Levy's a winner, what do you want to bet that the Painesville levy is a go also? For the children ?Honestly it should read for the staff. What resession are they talking about?

Hey 1:47...that's OK that there will be more signs...now more people will have more time to find out exactly what this levy is all about. I think what Term meant was they should have stuck to their stealth campaign.

An interesting post on "Sympathy for the Devil" I think we all should read.
The courts have prohibited foreclosure proceeding or any other transfers of the properties. The city would not issue building permits for these properties after the flood. They can't fix the property, they can't sell the property, they can't give the property away, they can't get rid of it in bankruptcy and they're not even allowed to go down there without a police escort. Everyone is being led to believe that Gibbs is holding this process up, but it's the city and the courts that are holding these people hostage.

Quite a story. Now why would the city pay as much as 10 times the value of this property [valued at $195,000] to turn around and hand it to the State of Ohio? along with no longer owning it but are obligated to take care of it? Four and a half years and no solution, why?
I don't get it, does anyone?

Pretty much the same reason as when they paid $250,000 for property along Richmond Rd. by Whalers Cove that isn't worth a tenth of that. Better known as Horvaths Lagoons why does the city feel compelled to aquire useless land. You don't get it no one gets it.

Traveling east on Mentor Ave. To make a left turn onto Fern Drive, the left light signal gives you about 3 seconds. Why is that?

To Term 2:44: Investigations. I think we need formal investigations into what goes on in this city because I just don't get it either. And I think the investigations need to go back at least 20 years.

To 2:21am, Just because you and Term don't get it doesn't mean it is illegal or dumb. It just means you don't get it!

2:21 Just maybe you can tell me how legal and/or ethical it is to take government funds and spend it on something 10 or 20 times what it's worth? If it isn't illegal it must be dumb, and maybe we're getting taken. Look it up.

5:19 Why don't you take the time to explain why it isn't illegal or dumb? It makes no sense to alot of us.

Speaking of Lakeland. I just found out today about the free education for people on welfare. Apparently those on welfare get a free ride.
Anyone know this for sure?
I heard this from another student.
They get a debit card to buy classes, books, clothing from the bookstore.
I would prefer the tuition increase for those attending and leave everyone else out of it.

This is 5:19

It isn't illegal because the City Manager has the right to make purchase arrangements and Council is the final approving body, they approved it, it is legal. When this city voted in the council you gave them these rights.

It isn't dumb because why would a city manager and 7 adult council members vote yes for something if it was that dumb? You may not know the reasons behind it but if it was a dumb move we have to assume the voters in this city elected 7 dumb people, who hired a dumb person, that in my mind would make the voters dumb themselves.

I'd like to see investigations into more than the things mentioned here. I'd like to see every real estate investment by any council members for the last 20+ years looked into. I'd like to see a very thorough investigation into the Painesville/Amp relationship also. They can start with an AMP investigation and branch it out into Painesville's connection with them when they are done.

To 2:10....I guess you live in that perfect world we all are striving for and just can't seem to reach. My world has a lot of human beings in it and I would venture to say that most of them do 'dumb' things on a regular basis. Doesn't make them 'dumb'...just them making 'dumb' choices on occasion. It isn't an all-or-nothing proposition...throw in just a few dumb councilpeople (like a simple majority will do here) and a lot of dumb (for the day) voters and then you end up with.....well...since you are so smart...I guess you can figure out just what you end up with.
Your simplistic argument might stand up elsewhere but please don't insult my intelligence today.

5:19 It's the city managers responsibility to inform council of ALL options not just the ones she approves of, and not keep them in the dark. {Cobblestone}
The council pays the CM to recommend all iimprovements to the quality of life in Painesville. I telling you people your asking a lot from people doing this job part-time for $6000.00 a year. A crossing guard makes more money. Then you have a CM who decides to present her legislation on a Friday evening and expects them to vote on expensive legislation Monday evening. Dumb?
I will never forget the CM face when councilman Flock pulled the correspondence between the city and Mentor out of his lapel pocket in regards to the Cobblestone situation. That along with her withholding the fact that the agreement with Grand River had ended. She thought that was important when she proposed it to council "in the beginning". Dumb?
Council can only function if the CEO of the city informs them of ALL facts, not just the ones she wants to. That's how we end up with $250,000 swamp land. People who trust the ones they put in charge. I believe the AMP-OHIO meeting will open many eyes Thursday night.

I hope the residents realize that when the BOE freezes pay on school employees. The average school employee receives a 2% longevity step pay raise yearly. Something to consider.
Something else to think about. Dr. Hanlon salary has gone up for the last fifteen years, and school scores have gone down in the same period.

Yes, what has happened? 25-35 years ago, Riverside and Harvey were very similar. The students grades and achievements were about the same.

So what has changed since then? Hanlon coming to town, businesses leaving town, New Market Mall disaster or more government subsidized housing and multi-family homes as a result of urban renewal? Maybe it is the change in the ethnic makeup of the city?

Can we point to any one reason or is it the result of all the things mentioned above and more? One thing for sure is that back a few years, we had several grocery stores along with shoe stores, restaurants, clothing stores, doctor offices, and a hospital.

Now we have drug stores, fast food and check cashing with maybe some gambling thrown in for good measure. The way things are headed, maybe the churches close to the Court House will be converted to half-way houses or bail bondsmen. Now when someone drives down Main Street, what do they see? Welfare offices and empty store fronts.

Makes us look more and more like Cleveland everyday. Is this really what living in a small town in America is going to be like?

With regard to the flowers: Did these people ask to plant on the grave sites? A lot of places forbid planting of live flowers into the ground. Perhaps they dod not check first so that is why they were removed?
Will someone help out 6:37.
I'd like to know before I vote.
