"OH WHAT A NIGHT" four seasons

Now where do we go from here? Keep your signs, expect a special election as early as February.
Have to wonder if the board and the administers will get serious or just try to take it out on the citizens and students of Painesville? We want real cuts, not half hearted ones and please.... no theats.
You have a very large and fluid budget... get serious.
I hope the people in charge engage with people in town to solve the dilemma. I know some people willing to lend a hand.

Charter change? We don't need no stinkin' council; one lady showed the people that we can make a difference. When Ms. Becks first approached me about this, I gave her as much chance as winning the Mega Lotto. Arlene, make sure you buy a ticket! Even in victory she seemed humbled by the situation. I, for one, know the way she was treated by some members of council when she wanted this presented as a charter change. She told me I, better then most, should understand people in town are fed up with the way things have been run in Painesville. I didn't think that many people were paying attention. I guess when they realize over 2 million dollars might be coming out of their pockets people perk up. Arlene, this one is all yours and the people that helped you... enjoy the moment.
What do you think about a Mayor instead of a city manager?

What do you think about recalling the three councilmen still there who voted for that contract. I thought you were the crazy one.

We definitely need to have a system where the PEOPLE can vote the city leader in and out. This is enough of this mess we are in with McMahon, that's for sure.

Term,
Yes thanks to everyone who voted down the schools, my wife will be in the first lay-off, she does not work on the top of the pole, she is a worker, one that is needed to help the kids learn and make it thru to the end, her and the other 28 workers that will be laid off right after the new year, will be the down fall of the city schools, they are the heart of the schools, the ones the kids need so much.

And about the other thing, the people had no ideal what they were voting for, how much do you think it will cost us, for the people at the Elect.board to check over the apps. and then when some idiot council person fills it out wrong and they have to send it back to the idiot, cert. mail, and wait for it to come back and do it all over again, no one read the whole thing if they did it would have failed.
Plus I hear there was some problems with some of the people supporting issue 4 at the poles, breaking the rules ?
I wonder if anything will be done about that.

Why would the administration lay-off the heart of what the children need the most? Either your wrong or they are. There is plenty of ways to save money without the remedy you see.
That issue 4 passed by almost 1000 votes? Was someone putting a gun to everyones head? sometimes it seems we need some common sense on council lets face it its not all that perfect a body. If you have an issue take it to Mrs. Clair at the election board, she I have found to be a fair person.

I didn't vote 'no' on the school levy because I'm anti-education or even anti-English as a second leanguage. I am against poor job performance...period. The letter the school board put out as a rebuttal to the anonymous one that circulated recently left a bad taste in my mouth. This administration went on and on about how and why they deserved the big bucks they get and forgot the audience they were trying to reach. They were talking to the poorest city in Lake County in the middle of a terrible economic slump....and they think we should believe they are justified in the salaries they get? I am really tired of the 'don't hurt the children or your property value' tune; how 'bout playing one where the administration actually gets in touch with reality and the adults start tightening their belts instead of making the kids tighten theirs for a change. I guess you are like so many other public entities...afraid to give something up because you think you won't ever get it back. You are turning out a product that you won't even let your own children consume...and I am supposed to subsidize it? Good job voters....lets hope the top dogs actually get the message.

The voting against the school levy has little to no impact on your wife's job. If you call and talk to the administration they will tell you that even if the levy passed, the cuts would still be necessary.

Your wife should know by now that this administration lies and uses fear and threats on a regular basis.

You hurt the middle-working class residents, no one else.
So a big thanks for nothing Term for all the damage you and your mis-guided followers have caused the working class people of this city. Your dad was a big supporter of the city schools. Think he'd be proud of you now?

They chose not to and now must face the fact that there is very little money and confidence in adding revenue to the system. I don't know much about annexation, but I do understand Painesville annxed township land & built beautiful homes. But all of the tax money for the schools goes to the township. I was once the land is annexed it's almost impossible to annex it for the school taxes. Why is that? Why won't the board try it? Seems to me that would solve alot of the problems they are having. Can someone explain this to me? The city really needs to get the taxes from these properties.

Take your grade transcripts to an upper teir college. They do not except the grading policy that Harvey has in place.
O.K. can't prove it failed, seems we don't have a high enough graduation average to prove the point one way or another.

At November 5, 2010 at 8:08 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It doesn's even have to be an upper tier school...I know a 2010 grad that couldn't get in to Kent State because of the policy. And this student was an average to above-average kid....not outstanding but certainly good enough to get into a state school. The 50% policy is a feel-good thing that gives the student more time to pass whatever work it is that he/she is failing. So why bother studying? It's an unrealistic approach; anyone that has ever dealt with a teen-ager on any level will tell you that they will find every flaw and loophole there is and exploit it to their advantage. Bottom line is that it keeps moving the kids along and keeps the all-important money tap open. And then when these kids get into the real world (sad to say, even McDonald's) they are shocked to find out that what they learned in school has no place in the adult working world. Oh, and good luck Mentor school system...you're next.

Hey 2:27... I will only comment on this ONE MORE TIME....the student that was refused admission to Oberlin was one of the most outstanding students Harvey has graduated in quite a while. I know and worked with this student so I know first-hand how the situation unfolded. This student asked for help from the school board (no help forthcoming) once the reason for the refusal was known. This student pursued other admission avenues with Oberlin until time constraints forced applications to other schools. This is a fairly recent occurence, (2 years ago) look it up. There was also a case of a student from the previous class (3 years ago) where the same situation happened...another outstanding student denied admission to a good private school because the 50% policy was not recognised.
Your remark "that means no one from Harvey ever gets to college now?" is simplistic at best. (and I'm trying to be polite.) There are quite a few that go on to higher education but it is IN SPITE of some of the education policies not BECAUSE of them. Painesville City Schools are just not getting the job done...PERIOD. And this in a day and age where no one can be successful without a good solid education. Why are you having such a difficult time wrapping your mind around the fact that there are huge problems in our local schools and that the 50% policy is just one of them?

It starting to seem that this levy failure wasn't only about people being not able to afford it, but also the product the system delivers.
I don't know what the answers are but it seems people are more concerned of their jobs, then the education of our children.

At November 6, 2010 at 1:31 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's see. School Levy was defeated and people here are happy because they say they have no money. Some are even taking credit. This would have added about $100 plus dollars to average home taxes. These same people probably voted for the Democrats who at this point, have yet to extend tax credits. Now the average income per household in Painesville is around $34,000. If the you deduct $14,000 in tax deductions, that leaves $20,000 that becomes the adjusted gross income. If you eliminate even the lowest tax cut of 5%, it will raise your income tax due by a $1,000.

Things sure seem quiet about this election. All we hear is Arlene for Mayor and so far we have saved around $100.

At November 6, 2010 at 1:38 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You can't have jobs without an education and without jobs, you can't pay for a school levy. They go hand in hand. A better economy would have produced different results. Hand people money and they will be happy. No money, they get angry. The election is proof of that.

At November 7, 2010 at 6:33 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

1:31 If it was so simple. Most will pay more than $100 along with businesses? Only $100 we also passed a Lakeland levy, along with a large increase MR/DD levy that passed in May, people will have sticker shock when tax bills come out in January and this levy would have added what, only $134.00 more?
It's not that the Congress won't extend the tax cuts for a few more years it's do the top 2% get the extention also.
What most people will have to watch early in the new year is if this Republican Congress votes to raise the country's debt ceiling? This will serve as a lesson to teapartiers who really run this country. [GOP leadership already has made the point they will?]
Goverment in this country has run amock, we can't win or end a war. We can't balance a budget. We can't keep American businesses jobs here. The richest country in the world has no idea how to provide healthcare to all its citizens [along with a document 20,000 pages that still doesn't do the job] We have no regulation over Wall St. We can't control our borders. Along with not being able to educate our young.
To someone like me it seems all of our problems stem from GREED!
The bigger problem I see no leaders. No Lincoln, Kennedy, Roosevelt,Eisenhower, Reagan in our future.

The problem is that government workers are over payed. When I was young it was the lowest paying job so they made it up with benefits. Now they have a 40% pay advantage over people in the private sector and have kept all their benefits?
Isn't it the same government that wants's to raise your retirement age, lets its own lemmings retire in their mid 50's and let them double dip, awhole other subject. If everyone in the Painesville School system agreed to a 10% pay cut and to pay for all increases in their health explenses this I belive would save the schools over 3 million dollars a year. The Lemmings would like some parisites to step up.

So if they were under budget, why wasn't the unused portion of what the taxpayers voted for returned back to them?
Does that make sense? It does to me.

"The bigger problem I see no leaders. No Lincoln, Kennedy, Roosevelt,Eisenhower, Reagan in our future."

Excellent statement. Big change in the Midterm election. Will we find any leaders among the newly elected? I HOPE so, but not expecting much change. We were promised hope and change from an inexperienced President. I don't think we got any. Our unemployment, foreign policy, war involvement and how the world looks at us have all stayed the same or gotten worse.

Even race relations were suppose to get better. Have they? In my opinion, NO. Say anything bad about the President and you are a racist. Yet, 90% of blacks support the President. This isn't reverse racism? When have 90% of a group of people agreed on anything let alone politically. Seems to me this has everything to do with race. Looks to me that if a white Republican says anything about the government, he is a racist. Yet a Black Democrat can say just about anything he wants to say. Just another way to play the blame game.

So between Republican and Democrats fighting each other, now we have to contend with racial issues that seem to be going down hill.

If the average American can't get along, how can we expect Congress to get along. Time to work together and work for what is best for the country, not just a select group.

I could care less if my President was Black, Green or White. I just want a leader who is Presidential and not a Rock Star or looking for personal achievements.

I can't handle this slamming the President. He did do many things he promised to do, including save our country from total collapse, thanks to the Republicans. What happened with this election is that the Republicans screamed and yelled and lied and scared people for two years. Instead of the average American remembering that it was the Republicans that got us into this mess, they followed the screamers and turned on the party that saved our country. Obama should have taken into account how despicable the Republicans are, and he should have realized that the American people would stupidly follow them. Most of the tea partiers have never participated in government before, have no idea what they are saying and screaming about. Take our country back - give me a break. Obama's mistake now is tucking his tail between his legs and bowing down. He should be telling people straight out what they hell happened this last two years, since they were too stupid to get it.

Sometimes I wonder if the most socialist country we have near us Canada. Do they have 10% unemployment, 30 million without healthcare and the foreclouser's we have in the states. I know their banks pay 4% on CD's wonder how they were spared from all this?

This is 3:00. Yes, I watched the same thing happen to Clinton. He assumed that even though the Republicans were lying and screaming, the American people would know the truth. You just can't assume that of the electorate in America. Then I watched Obama do the same thing. Democrats have to stop being so nice. They have to hit back when the lying starts. Obama needed to understand what he was up against, and he needed to have monthly, if not weekly talks sitting as his desk in the oval office to keep explaining what was going on and why he was doing what he was doing and why what the Republicans were saying were lies. The Democrats did do that but not enough. They gave the voters too much credit. Now he's being apologetic, when he has nothing to be apologetic about. He's saying he should have worked with the R's, when I agree with you, he tried too hard to do that, they refused, now he is taking the blame. I guess that's why I'm not in office. I'd be calling the American people stupid.

The GOP smells blood in the water with regards to the President. Just keep telling the lie. I think the partiers are in for a surprise in January.
I open hope he knows that the Republicans don't want to work with him. Maybe its time he Man's up?

This is 11:49. Yes, I do think it's time he man's up. He has to stop being so nice. He needs to knock it off and fight fire with fire. As I said, if you aren't spelling out the truth for the American people loud and often, they don't get it. They side with the lying, screaming Republicans. I had a friend the other day who was over here yelling that his father voted Republican for the first time in his life because he is from Poland, he knows what Socialism is, and Obama is turning this into a Socialist country. My friend said that he felt the same way. At least my friend doesn't vote. I told him to tell his father thanks for sending my country back to the people who almost collapsed it. Stupid. Sorry, can't quit saying stupid. And Obama better knock it off, find his backbone, realize that the American people are stupid and take it strongly from there. I have never in my lifetime (I am almost 60) seen a President do so much for us in such a short amount of time -- and that is in spite of the Republicans trying to stop every single thing that he was trying to accomplish and lying about every single thing he was trying to accomplish. They did the same thing to Clinton. They don't care about Americans. They care about money and big business and making the Republicans look right. I can't believe the American people let them get away with it. The Democrats better smarten up and realize the mentality - or lack of mentality - of the electorate.

At November 8, 2010 at 3:28 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is 11:49 again. I want to add to my last post. Another thing that is really making me angry is the Democrats that are mad because Obama didn't get the public option into the health bill. I, too, thought that that was very important to do. But what they don't realize is that with the Republicans trying to stop the whole thing as they were, Obama had about a ten minute space of time to get the bill passed without it, and he could not have done it with that option included. He brilliantly grabbed the moment and passed what he could, knowing he could go back later and pick up that part and that he was lucky to be getting what he was getting. I feel like stepping on the toes of every Democrat I hear complaining about that. They apparantly have no idea what he did and went through to get us what he got us. Republicans have been content to let the insurance companies kill Americans right and left - one way or the other.

Yep, blame the GOP. In 2008, Obama took Lake County by a 49.58% to a 48.78% margin. Yet in Painesville, He won by a 66.60% to 33.40%. So you can see that Painesville is mostly Democrat. Who do you think most people will blame here. In two years, where did all his support go? Where did the voters go? How can there be that big of change in Congress across the whole country? Either the majority of the country is stupid and wrong or Painesville is.

I happen to believe that the voters are fed up and want someone willing to listen to them or they will start voting them out of office. Isn't that what people want to happen here in Painesville. School Board and Council

Will there be more changes in 2012, I'm sure. Let's see what happens in January before placing blame. Voting only along party lines isn't always what's best for the common good regardless of whether it is locally or in the House or Senate.

Politicians want to be re-elected, businesses want profits, unions want more members and we need more jobs. Time the first three start worrying about the needs of the last one, the average American and JOBS.

The top 2% tax cut. If someone would explain how giving a person making a Million Dollars a year a $80,000 tax cut will lower the deficit? Show me the savings and I'm behind you. Why hasn't it worked already?
I only hope the President makes a stand, the numbers bear him out.

Anonymous 4:45pm, you are LMAO hilarious! TERM really a Republican?!!! I can't think of anything funnier. And what do you mean by who he hangs out with? He hangs out with Democrats!

One of the problems is that you used to be able to trust the media to tell the truth, so back when they actually were careful to do their job completely, these Republicans and the likes of Glenn Beck, etc., would never have gotten away with this slimy, lying behavior.

The News-Herald finally published wonderful, complete, truthful articles on the Stimulus. Then they asked the readers what they thought of that. Republicans didn't like it and screamed all over the blog, most Democrats were silent, of course. Why were they wondering what people thought of them printing the truth? It was their JOB to print the truth. It was their job to print the truth in contrast to all the lies, as it is for all news media. Sadly this is not happening. Add that to all the Americans who are too stupid to get the facts from someplace real, and you have people giving the government back to the people who wrecked every part of of lives.

Obama was doing a wonderful job. In two short years, he stopped our collapse and saved our country and started us back up. Now the Republicans are vowing to undo everything he did to help us and to do exactly what they were doing before that almost completely collapsed our entire country.

Stupid. And Badger, if you want to blame someone for lack of jobs, it was the Republicans. Blame them.

And by the way, the Republicans have been blocking President Obama's efforts to create more jobs every chance they get, and they are vowing to keep doing it. He's had a jobs bill that has been waiting for some time. He has some fantastic ideas to create new kinds of jobs because the Republicans sent many of the jobs overseas. He saved our auto industries, where there are many, many jobs tied into it, not just in the plants. Everyone screamed about it. But guess what? All or most of the bailout money has been paid back and/or will be. Still the country let Obama take the blame. Stupid. Sorry, just can't quit saying that word.

Government doesn't create jobs. It hires people who the taxpayers must pay. Nothing is produced only more tax money needed from everyone to pay that worker. In other words, more high paid administration just like the school system and city workers everyone here says is top heavy.

One thing that is similar across all income levels is that the more money a person makes and takes home, the more he or she is likely to spend. Lower tax brackets tend to create demand for everyday products and higher tax brackets tend to start a business to fill this demand thus creating jobs. Supply and demand. We need buyers and producers. One of the problems we have today is that we are a service oriented economy instead of a manufacturing one. The first thing that a person gives up is the extras. Less eating out, less lawn care, keeping cars longer, delaying health care, less new clothes and even a smaller Christmas. Notice the increase in houses for rent. Who left and where did they go.

Workers need jobs and job security and businesses need a reasonable profit to stay competitive, invest in new equipment and pay all the costs of doing business. Employer insurance, half of employee social security, health insurance, unemployment insurance, training, not to mention equipment and building costs all add up. Health insurance isn't the only thing going up. Ask any employer the true cost per employee. It is a lot more than in that employee's pay check.

So before you accuse me of being a rich business man, come live in my shoes. I'm far from it. I just happen to have been on both sides of the paycheck in my life. I have collected a pay check and I have written pay checks. We all need to work together. Employer and employee as well as Republican and Democrat. Until we do, I think we will be in this sour economy for a long time.

So a tax cut that could produce a new job is much better than a new person on unemployment for up to two years. More workers not more welfare recipients. So 2% of a Million is 20,000 not 80,000. Now my question is, how many taxpayers does it take to pay for each person on welfare or each on unemployment. That's a time bomb waiting to go off because the states are borrowing money to pay for this. I think California is 40 million a day. That's all the more reason to get people back to work. Jobs first, that's my problem with the current administration.

Great point Badger only one problem the jobs being created are jobs in China, India, and Mexico. I would give anyone a tax break if they invest in the United States. The Bush tax cuts have not proven to stimulate our economy. What Congress has to do is show the American people how they will pay for these tax cuts.
This Free trade is a joke, what this country needs is fair trade.
P.S. I have all kind of friends I don't view people to the right of me my enemy.

It was an Indian unnamed offical that released the story about 200 million dollar a day trip expenses . With NO facts to back it up.
Save your time. People only believe what they want to believe.
People like Limbaugh, Beck only misinform when it suits their message.
On Becks radio show he gave the 200 million dollar story as fact. On his T.V. show he said he didn't know? Must be two Becks. $89.00 for a ear of corn?

Concerning misinformation making all the news outlets - used to be a day not too long ago that that would not have happened. The newspapers and radio news stations all verified things and called a spade a spade and set the truth straight when necessary. Now most people lie, including our news outlets, and very few worry about the truth at all, let alone uncovering it to inform their readers/listeners.

As far as jobs and this administration go - Obama told people when he was running for office that many of the jobs were just gone because they were sent overseas, or because the economy was collapsing and the jobs were going with it. Anybody knows that during a regular Recession, the jobs are the last thing to come back. During THIS almost-DEPRESSION, it was an even worse situation than ever. Obama has given businesses breaks so they can hire, he saved the banking industry so we can have a country and businesses can get loans, etc. etc., etc. He has jobs bill(s) in the works that the Republicans have been blocking, of course. The economy is coming back, jobs are starting to come back now, and we ARE making a comeback. Anyone who is blaming Obama for lack of jobs is incorrect. It was and is not his fault. But clearly people are only seeing what they want to see. Republicans will never admit that they just voted in the same people who did this to us and who vow to do the same things again. I suggest the R's knock off the crap and pass Obama's jobs bill.

Well, we need jobs. To get jobs we need business to create them. That goes for Painesville, Ohio and the country. We need a business friendly city, state and country. Let's face it, how friendly is Painesville to new businesses. High taxes, high rents and a city income tax. Seems one leaves and a couple more follow. Think it is any better for a company than it is for the average homeowner in dealing with our local government? It's not.

Attracting new businesses is only part of the problem. People talk about jobs going over seas but how many just look for the best price when they shop. American made is almost a thing of the past.

If we want to keep higher paying jobs here, we need to do a better job educating our students. Can't compete if all you get is high school dropouts or ones who can't read. To be competitive, you need to work together as a team. Owners and workers. The day of automatic pay raises and huge bonuses must come to an end. They should be tied to production. An honest days pay for an honest days work and that goes for the CEO's. Companies lose money, then no big bonus for the CEO.

We also need to put an end to sub-prime lending. It is not a right to own a house or fancy car. You have to be able to pay for it. STOP the risky loans and the selling them off to someone else. Half the home loans who received federal help from foreclosure are back in foreclosure. Shouldn't have gotten the loan in the first place.

With all the talk about the federal deficit, people overlook the high cost of unemployment and it's extension out to almost 2 years will have on the states budget. The states pay for most of the unemployment payouts. They will surly have to increase borrowing from the fed's and increase the employers percentage that they pay to pay for this.

Everybody wants to blame Wall Street. Yes they are partly to blame but let's face it, when they were making a lot of money, people and their retirement funds were enjoying the ride. From sub-prime loans and over inflated prices, the bubble finally burst. A lot of bad investments and a lot of bad policies the last 20 plus years got us into this mess. It is going to be a lot of work to get us out.

Problem is, without jobs, we have less people paying their share of the taxes.

"the jobs being created are jobs in China, India, and Mexico"

Yes, we are losing jobs overseas. When was the last time you bought a TV, stereo, DVD player and others made in the USA. How about foreign cars? They started out cheaper then better than ours. Shoes, clothing, tools, computers, you name it, it's made overseas and we buy them because they are cheaper.

Manufacturing has been replaced with a service oriented business environment. We aren't producing anything of real value. A service is of little value if you can't afford to pay for it. You can't sell it to someone else or leave it to your children. It is only a one time use and it's value is gone. So we as Americans have only ourselves to blame.

It use to be you could go into a trade or a factory and become a highly skilled worker over time or you went to college and became a teacher, doctor, etc. You became part of the neighborhood. Invested for a life time in a lot of cases. Now, people come and go, always looking to make a quick buck and then move on. No one wants to start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder.

One thing that could bring jobs is repairing our infrastructure. It is being sadly overlooked in today's economy. Green (and I mean true green) technology is another. But it is still in it's early development. We have foreign cars made here now but parts come from all over the world.

Do I have a solution. Not really. Will we get these jobs back? Very unlikely. Who's to blame. All of us. Will the newly elected Congress solve this? I doubt it. Government can't solve this alone because they are part of the problem. Same for business, another part of the problem. We, the American tax payer, have shown we can force the first to listen. Now we need to hold the second to a higher standard.

The jobs bill was passed back in the middle of March 2010.

Also, how are the Republicans holding this up? They have the majority in both houses until January. Filibuster proof for the most part.

I am waiting until the Census spike and the Christmas spike in employment numbers are not counted to see what the real numbers are. Ask a real estate salesman, car salesman or maybe a construction worker if things are looking that great. Also, there are a large number of unemployed due to run out of unemployment benefits.

Withholding my belief that it is getting better for now. Also, not placing blame on either side for unemployment. It's everybody's fault.

Badger 6:51 It's pretty hard to purchase American made items if none are built here. The proplem is not free trade but fair trade. Oue trade agreements well just plain stink! While other countries protect their workers the U.S. sends ours to the gallows. Yes we all have been taught the Walmart consumerism buy the cheapest., but at what price to our overall economy.
Three stupid things I'm proud of
!. Never purchasing a foreign car.
2. Never paying money for single serve bottled water.
3. Never paying over $30.00 for a pair of tennis shoes.
I've almost figured out how to do without a cell phone.

To Badger: I believe the president has had a huge bill for the infrastructure and for green technology for some time that he wants to pass, but the R's are yelling about the spending. As he said, spend first to save the country and then to get people back to work. Then tackle the deficit that skyrocketed because our country almost collapsed. The R's will probably pass it when THEY are in office so THEY can take the credit for it.
