Why doesn't the charter work now? Are people who are running for Painesville office less component today? Its like telling your child that there are only winners and no loser.. or saying do it again.... you will get another chance! If you are stupid enough to vote for it, then let it be..

Why does it take more signatures to run for council in a 17,000 population town then one with 56,000? Why do you only need 50 signatures to run for a county position? Why are the people in power in Painesville against against any change?
We need a Mayor! or at leasts someone to hold accountable.

One thing that I personally feel is wrong with the charter, is that the citizens do not have the right to vote out McMahon, and NOBODY on council will will fire her no matter WHAT she does.

I voted today and it was quick, efficient and painless. I may not get the outcome that I want but voted my conscience....yes to only one incumbant, no to all levies and yes on the charter amendment. Too bad there weren't a few city council positions up for grabs...would have voted AGAINST those incumbants too. That's the only recourse we have right now to get it across to those holding office that 'business-as-usual' is no longer acceptable.

For the Democrats in office, it has been anything but "business as usual." They saved our country from total collapse, and are lifting it up while also helping the American people in many, many important ways, so I don't understand anyone voting our Democrats as "business as usual" politicians. Hope that's not what's happening, but I guess to each his own. Let this be a reminder for all Democrats to make sure you vote.
On REW's other statement about city council: I wish there were some to vote out, too. We need John Murphy in there, for one thing.
Can someone explain the charter amendment and the purpose for it? I'm confused as to why Becks wants this. I think there is a provision that candidates have a chance to correct errors on their petitiions. That seems like a good thing to me. Why not? But the rest of it? Term?

Lets take 3 council at large seats.Lets say Hada is Jan 1, DiNallo Jan 2, Fodor Jan 3, lets say you want to run for Hada's term because you believe the other two are doing a good job. So you challenge Hada. If you want to challege Fodor you run for his seat and so forth. The people in charge will fight this only because its different.
It's for the people to decide. Becks was stalled by the current council to change some procedures. My best reason for it's passage is to let the powers to be, know the citizens know they can change things.
11:57 I will tell you one thing. As long as Hada, Fountain, and Hach sit on council its more than a safe bet that the city manager will hang onto her job. I'm going to have to ask whats with the notes back and forth between Hada and McMahon? Don't want anyone to overheard or lips read?
Joe Hada stands by his 50% comment on electric rates, guess will have to look into it.

Why is it that the schools and local government never take a pay cut? Its for the children, no it's not it's for the administration, teacher's bus driver's and all the others. If you worried about the KIDS the school's wouldn't be in the dismal state of education there in. New buildings, same old same old achievement. Clean House don't throw more money onto this failure.

The problem I have with the schools is that they had to build ALL new schools all at one time, instead of spacing them out and, therefore, lowering our tax bill. I do not think all schools needed to be replaced at once. I also think that they NEEDED all the children of the illegal Hispanics for more money from the state for the schools. I think that could be part of the reason that they turned this into a sanctuary city. But now, we have all these children of illegals taking up all this money and dragging down the whole school system because, for one thing, they can't speak English. I also don't think their parents prize a graduation diploma. Then you also have the factor of the pregnant teenagers who are themselves having anchor babies.
Am I reading any of this incorrectly?

The fact that scares me, although I won't be around to have to face it all these schools will all have to be replaced around the same time.
The school system has to educate whomever comes through the door. Painesville chose to ignore or maybe embrace the illegal status of people who came here.
They came here for jobs. We can only hope that all people value an education. Along with having children after they become adults themselves

Commenting on your original post: I hope Arlene Becks does not run again. But it sounds like she intends to. She was useless and rude when she was in office. Would hate to see her there again.

What about the library levy? Will this raise our taxes, or will they just remain the same on this issue if the library issue is passed. Term?
Thanks for the info on the charter change.

Arlene Becks rude? You must not be watching much, Hada and McMahon along with the smug law director now there's rude! She asked and asked for a council meeting on this and was put off and even LIED too. Yes we need more council people like Fountan and Hach that just stare at the walls in a trance. I watch the council meeting hoping that one day Andy Flock goes off on these jerks. Joe Hada has destroyed this city and he thinks he's done a wonderful job. Well I guess he has if your goal was to make Painesville the crummiest place to live.

This is 2:17 to 5:09. Calm down. Nowhere did I say that Hada or any other of McMahon's sidekicks were the answer. And do I believe that Becks was lied to by them? I wouldn't doubt that for a minute. I, too, have been lied to many times by people running this city, including Flock.
I'm speaking from personal experience with Becks. I stand by my statement that she was useless and rude, and I hope she does not find her way back into office. The city does not need the likes of her, either.
Again, just because I don't like Becks does not mean that I am FOR the rest. That's quite a leap, and one that I highly resent.

And if you want to talk about lying, just go back and check out what McMahon, Hada, Fountain, etc. do every time John Murphy runs for office. They come up with new lies every time, and then they all help spread them, including McMahon. I remember quite well her statement that went something like this, "I remember there was an incident, but I don't exactly remember what the incident was." Really Rita? That's when Murphy found out about one of them and called her on it. It seemed they didn't expect that lie to surface until right before the following election, but John found out about it early.

They don't want him in there because they know it won't be business as usual. He'll question things and investigate them. It will be hard for them to pull any more wool over our eyes.

We need investigations. Lots of investigations.

We also need charter changes. We need to get the power back from her that Hada, etc. gave her. But more than that, we probably need to change it so the people can have the power to hire and fire our city leader.

And by all means, we need to get Hada, Fountain and Hach out.

WE DO NEED A CHARTER CHANGE, TO MAKE THE ELECTION PROCESS FAIR FOR EACH INDIVIUAL THAT RUNS FOR COUNCIL-AT-LARGE IN THIS CITY. THE CURRENT PROCESS, GIVES ANY CANDIATE IN THE GROUP RUNNING BY TELLING PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR ONLY THEM. WHEN IT ASKS FOR YOU TO VOTE FOR THREE CANDIATES AND YOU ONLY VOTE FOR ONE, THIS IS A DISADVANTAGE FOT THE OTHER CANDIATES. MAYBE THIS IS WHY WE HAVE THE CAREER POLITICIONS, LIKE JOE HADA, AND HE ALWAYS GETS THE MOST VOTES THAN ANY ONE ELSE. THIS IS WHY WE NEED A CHANGE. VOTE YES AND MAKE THE AT-LARGE ELECTION THE SAME AS THE WARD ELECTION.

Well I see a former city hall employee chimed in on the editors page of the News-Herald I wouldn't expect anything less. You make a great point on picking 3 at one time. In another newspaper article the election board has asked the charter change committee to change the numbers of signatures to run for council. Now try to figure this logic of our city leaders. You need 197 vaild signatures to get on the ballot to run for Painesville council at large. Now if you want to run for the United States Congress you only need 50? Wonder which incumbent doesn't want the charter to change? Maybe you will get a better idea how they keep their seat.

Yes, I just read the editor's page opinion by the former city hall employee. I thought we were done hearing from her. This woman was such a pain in my behind when she worked for the city - I cannot even begin to tell you. I have no respect for her, either.
