"ANTICIPATION" carly simon

Wonder what Tuesday will bring? Most of the people striving for office won't change my life one way or the other. I'm still trying to figure out how our governor cost us 400,000 Ohio jobs. I see no surprises on the local level although if I was a Democrat, I believe I would have a restless sleep Tuesday night.

Money issue, that's what I'm waiting to see how that turns out. Will the Lakeland levy pass? Will the Painesville City Schools replacement levy pass? I'm like everyone else at the mercy of the voting public. If either of these two levy's pass I can only assume things aren't as bad as everyone tells me.

I voted against the Lakeland levy because I believe its unfair to subsidize out of county students who I don't believe pay a fair amount of tuition for the education they receive at Lakeland. Maybe we should limit out of county enrollment?

Painesville School levy. If I thought this levy would put our schools back on track
I would make the sacrifice and vote for this levy. I don't believe this extra money will make the education of our children ,one bit better. Along with not believing its for the kid's. That whole pay structure of the system must be reexamined. Should the board be in the transportation, and food service business? Should qualified teachers monitor study halls? Are the students and their parents somewhat responsible for what transpires in the classroom, or are the school's just a glorified babysitting service? Has anyone mentioned a pay freeze for the next upcoming contracts? The schools will be negotiating new contracts for classified and unclassified employees at the end of the school year in 2011. Will the state send us LESS money because we just added close to a million dollars in local revenue?
Listening to Mr. Taylor list the financial crisis the schools face, it almost sounded like what I'm facing in my life. Higher Health care costs, utility costs, food, gasoline you name it its gone up. Not my wages, who do I ask for a levy from? Even senior citizens have now lost their COLA on Social Security where will they find the money.

The fact that the nine highest payed employees of the district don't live in Painesville and won't be voting on this levy makes me wonder why I should believe in the product that is the Painesville City Schools.

I will wait in anticipation for the voting results. Then I will wait in anticipation the results this levy will bring or not bring. If you got it and don't need it vote "YES" If your in a struggle to keep your head above water vote "NO". It's really quite elementary.

There is a letter posted on the pcls.net website regarding the anonymous letter that people received in the mail with the salaries of some BOE employees in it.
You should read it.

Yes, Tuesday will be interesting.

I have a few ads or rumors I haven't heard yet.

1. Term and Rita are brother and sister.

2. AMP is really Bush's fault.

3. The health care bill caused the hospital to move.

4. Ask the unemployed if TARP got them a new job, or maybe just hired temp workers such as census and election poll workers.

5. Hanlon's 50% grading policy was actually the graduation rate he was aiming for, but M. Hada made a mistake and resigned instead.

6. This years 5 year plan is going to slip more low income housing, payday loans, rentals, hispanic restaurants, and maybe a halfway house.

7. All city workers, school administration, police and fire dept. employees will move back to the city and have a real stake as to what the levies cost.

It seems the more outrageous the claim, the more people believe it.

Yes, lots of negative campaigning is thrown at us daily. Lost jobs or worked for wall street. She's a witch or he's a crook. This President or that President is to blame for economy when most of the blame should be directed toward Congress.

Who do you believe or trust. Strickland lost jobs, but all 400,000? Kasich made millions in wall street. He made millions or the company he worked for did?

Think about this for a moment. If you had a chance to trade for say Michael Jordan or Ray Lewis in their prime, would you say no way because he made a lot of money playing for the Bulls or the Steelers. No, you would trade for someone who might just make you team better.

I will say, we are in for the pendulum to swing back the other way. How far, who knows. There will be a lot of sour grapes and finger pointing.

I only hope there will be a little more of "The buck stops here." I will take responsibility and not try and blame someone else from those we elect during this midterm election.

About the auditors site, there is a disclaimer as to the information on that site. Also I checked and there could be 100 reasons this has not been payed.

I find it interesting that people are complaining about the school system and a new levy. We have a President(superintendent Hanlon), a congress (the school board) and the teachers ( our military, social services and the like). Then we have the the ones who receives (students) and the ones who pay for the services ( the home owner/taxpayer).

This sounds an awful lot like our federal government. We complain that our school system is just for the administration and that they are completely out of touch with the average person/homeowner/taxpayer. Yet, we seem to keep electing people who run the schools this way and people who want to do the same with the federal government by promoting a bigger government. Are the Czars going to make the country any better or more school board members increase our graduation rate?

We need more workers. We need more teachers for our schools and more jobs to reduce unemployment. Teachers to increase our school's rating and jobs/workers to get our economy back on track.

Administration heavy, school systems or federal, state and local forms of government just aren't the answer. We need our teachers and we need JOBS to pull things together. Teachers, not school boards or superintendents teach the children. Workers and businesses make things and pay taxes, not congressmen or government employees.

Think about it. It's just that simple.

And we do the same on the all elections, How many times must we vote for Fisher, Kasich, DeWine, Young, plus all the other retreads?

Yes, Badger, so therefore, we had better keep the Democrats in power if we care about our country and ourselves. It was the Republicans, after all, who almost completely ruined our country and almost got us into another Depression. It is the Democrats who are getting us out. It's just that simple.

We will find out on Tuesday night who the majority thinks is right. It might be the Democrats or it might be the Republicans. Either way, some here will be happy and some will cry foul. Did Hope work in the last two years? Maybe, maybe not. The election will ask that question. How people vote this election will answer that question? Will huge Republican wins solve our problems? Same, maybe, maybe not. The election in 2012 will be the average voter's answer in that election.

I still say it is time for all politicians to get to work and do what is right and stop blaming the other side. If they would work together as hard to solve problems as they do running negative campaigns, think what could be done. After all, they work for us and not just themselves.

During the last election, less than 45 percent of the registered voters bothered to go to the polls. The MR/DD levy, which will raise your taxes, passed with only 17,000-so votes. I guess we get what we ask for. And jobs have been leaving this country for more than 20 years. Why did it take so long to care? Too many regulations, and taxes on businesses. But anyway, go to the board of elections web site on election night and watch - pay attention to the voter turnout. it's sad, and it'll be said again on Tuesday.

I recently came back to the town of Paine. Ville en la Grande... (pronounced with a big French accent)
This place I have known as 'home' I carried with me as I traveled the world. From the jungles of southern Mexico to Adriatic coast. Yes, when it came down to it, I was from the village of Paine. I wore this sort of like a badge of authenticity. Like, "hey I am from Painesville, you can not fool me", " I am real ". This shroud or chip upon my shoulder gave me a unique perspective as I interacted with locals as I traveled here and there. I felt as, if I could remember where I was from, I would always know where I am going, and essentially steer my own destiny, this is, I guess that 'middle class' 'no shit assessment' attitude, that comes from living in a community that is always second fiddle or the underdog or behind the eight ball.. whatever, it always feels like you have something to prove when you come from this town.

Now as I am back, I take a drive down Main Street and around the park passing by city hall, and I think gosh, I need to get out of here. This place is really a pain on my constitution, for lack of a better phrase, Painesville sucks. As I turn down the streets that I once rode my bike upon many, many, many, times, I reflect and pause and again I say out loud, 'get me the heck out of here, there is nothing going on here!!!' To be fair I am sure some that read this are city employees and in that fair sense, it is my estimation that if you are a city employee, life in Paine ain't all that bad. But I would estimate, that it is about a 80/20 split... 80 % just come here to be forgotten and left alone , no real aspiring moves in life.. and 20% are fat and happy sucking off the city's or county's tax base and nothing could be better..

Oh and instead of just complaining I will offer a solution. Why doesn't the grand leadership of the Ville en la Grande get outside and look to something beyond talking about 50% lower electric rates and the party in the park and the dunkin' donuts new store..
how about this:

http://codeforamerica.org/about/

get involved and good luck and maybe drop the Paine... in the ville. Just call it LaVille.

What I don't understand was when the city wanted to make a charter change a few years ago, you and your followers were Totally against it. No way should anyone make that type of change with the city's constitution. Now it's what you and your cohorts want that makes it a different story now?

Hey Mad Potter....the city manager just wants people to think that its Term's fault if the recycling center gets closed...it is really all about the money..just like so much else in this world. The county is in the process of cutting their subsidy for recycling to local communities to the tune of 20% per year over a 5 year period. Bottom line is that the costs to recycle are being slowly shifted to the residents...on top of already increasing trash pick-up prices. This process is to begin in 2011 and continue over a five year period. (Lake County Tribune - Friday, October 22, 2010) So if and when Ms. Rita does make a change in how city residents can recycle...it won't be because of Term wanting a fence to enhance what's there...it'll be because she isn't getting the extra money to do it anymore. Personally I cannot understand why she doesn't just put up the fence and sell advertising on it for local businesses...a win-win. I guess that's a foreign concept here though.

Look what you've gone & done.
The poor kids in Painesville are gonna suffer because of you Term.
Dear PCLS Staff Members:
We certainly find ourselves in a difficult financial period in the State of Ohio. It is a certainty that the district will be making some mid-year non-personnel (and possibly some personnel) reductions and definitely much more sweeping reductions in all areas for the start of the 2011-12 school year. I want to share with you what to expect in the next several weeks.

With the uncertainty of the levy result at this time, the Board of Education has determined that specific discussions concerning reductions WILL NOT occur at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, November 15, 2010. Rather, they have elected to schedule a Board work session for Monday, November 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Harvey HS to discuss reductions in light of a more certain election result. There will be more general discussion of the following points this Monday evening:
I will be meeting with the leadership of both the PCTA and OAPSE bargaining units early next week to discuss reductions that are being considered at this time. None of these reductions will be officially considered until the result of the election is finalized and , therefore, the list should be considered preliminary.
Several members of the central administrative staff have been starting the process of speaking individually with those that are potentially being considered in this reduction discussion. This is being done out of respect for those individuals and to attempt to cut down on the rumor mill. Again, I emphasize that this is preliminary and DOES NOT constitute any official notice of Reduction in Force now or in the future, only that a particular position may be discussed at some point. It is only to give those individuals that hold positions being discussed some advance information rather than having them learn about this in some other manner. Keep in mind that I have not had the opportunity to finalize the potential reductions or discuss them with the Board or the respective Association leaders at this time, but will do so early next week as the information becomes clearer.
I had the opportunity to be in Columbus earlier this week to hear information concerning what districts across the state can expect. The news is not at all optimistic. The Board of Education and I certainly understand that these are troubling and indeed scary times for everyone. I will do my best to communicate information to you as it becomes available. I am also asking that you refrain from engaging in rumor mill discussions that are not based in fact as these can be very detrimental during this time of great uncertainty. I assure you that it is not possible for anyone to be discussing a "list" with any certainty at this time as it is still very much a work in progress. It will also be equally important for us all to continue to focus our energies on the job at hand, serving the 3,000 students that come through our doors with our very best efforts each and every day as we work through this challenge.

Sincerely,
Michael P. Hanlon, Jr.

I may seem a little naive about this stuation but why is the administration NOW talking to the PCTA and OAPSE when they knew this storm was on the horizon?
Did they figure the levy would pass in economic times we are presently in.
The board should consider a "number" percentage of wage cuts to classified and unclassified employees along with the administration to come up with a line on Mr. Taylors graph so all will remain employeed along with not affecting students.
Does everyone in the system expect taxpayers who are struggling to bail them out?
RUHAPPY? I only got to vote once, and I made my reason clear.

I believe all the "rumors" Hanlon mentioned had very little to do with how to educate Painesville's students. Just how will this affect my REAR-END?
They want to blame you? Look at the test scores, the graduation rate, along with money being so tight. For once they gave you way to much credit.
Wonder how they will make up the 83 votes?

To "RU Happy Now?"

I hardly think the outcome of the recent tax levy can be blamed on one man, unless you were just being sarcastic. (Term - you swung the election?)
It would seem that the voters of Painesville (a whopping 3500 out of 8000) voted and it lost. Where were the extra 5000 people? Obviously they did not care about this issue enough to go out and vote on it!
School districts within this whole nation are dictated by the unions. Plain and simple. The unions do not want to make any concessions that will help save money! They made their bed, now they have to sleep in it. It WILL work out one way or another.
It will be interesting to see how Ledgemont's "emergency" fiscal status pans out. It will probably be a model for the rest of Lake and Geauga school districts.
If people are tired of paying more taxes to the schools, LET THE STATE OF OHIO come in and take over.
If you wanted the levy to pass, go to the BOE and make a donation directly! There is always a list of "donated" items on the BOE meeting minutes - I bet they'll accept cash.
Ultimately, the STUDENTS will not be without teachers educating them.
Go to this website and click on Painesville City District. It will show you the staff salaries - for the past few YEARS. Pick a name - look at the amount of increase. Some, not much and others ...a lot. Most individuals under 25k are support staff. The website is: ohiocasb.org/about/data

It's far easier to blame you or someone else for this failure instead of looking at the facts as to why the levy failed.
I beleive the nine highest paid employees not living in the district had a much larger affect on votes than your signs. There is no way this little group will take the blame for anything.

To 3:42,

It just has an alphabetical list of both mixed together. BOE staff are not on this listing. If you go to pcls.net and go to staff directory, click submit, the entire staff listing will come up. It states what building they work in and their job description. If you are looking for a specific individual, you can match it up that way. The majority of the people on this list who make less than 20-25k/year are support staff. There are some that make more but they are long-time employees and custodians.

I acted on my right as a citizen in this city. ONE vote.
I did what I was taught at Harvey over 40 years ago. Freedom of speech along with how important it was to vote.
I want someone to take responsibility in our schools.
I don't have it in my budget to hand over another $134.00 to a failed system. Using common sense how will this make the education of our children better?
Mr. Dillard asked residents to bite the bullet and vote yes for this levy. Now I ask anyone working for the district where is the shared sacrifice?
Don't layoff a few teachers aides and tell me look at the money we saved at the expense of students and teachers that needed them the most.
I expect Dr. Hanlon to punish the students, parents and taxpayers the most.
Why not de-certify the union?
Why not ask for a 6% wage cut for all employees?
Is this the third rail of education?
Maybe Dr. Hanlon should go and ask some businesses in the area what they would do? Raising prices would not be at the top of the list.
No lets go back to the people of Painesville who's only reason for working is to support this city and it's schools.
There were many NO votes a couple of weeks ago. I can't take credit for people in this city waking up to reality.

Even if it a $30,000,000 million dollar expense for the schools that goes towards employees, thats 6% is only going to save you, $1,800.000 million dollars. Thats a chunk of change!
I believe it's time people in town learned what teachers, administrator, bus drivers make.
