"BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER" s/g

JUST A REMINDER;
This coming Tuesday at the Painesville Senior Center June 29 You are invited to a presentation of the downtown Painesville Transportation and Streetscape Plan.
Time 6:30 PM-8:30 PM
Also the school board will have a special meeting at the Hanlon Presentation Room at Harvey at 7:00 PM June 30,2010. I believe this meeting to to discuss a levy for the schools this November. For or against this is the time to let the board know your feelings on the proposal.
************************************************************************************

On another note Riverside Cemetery looks well kept at the present time.
As I walk around I never noticed before that there must be special plots for infants and young children. I believe it is in section 7 the north part of the cemetery. How I noticed this was in the last week or so someone had placed small stuffed animals on the headstones I felt this was a very touching thing to do. Thank-you to whoever you are.
************************************************************************************
Well maybe over some railroad tracks with a disputed about the amount of trains that use them.In today's News-Herald "Lake County Port Authority gets closer to issuing bonds. The county might spend its $18.3 million allocation from the federal stimulus package.
Now up until today I believed the city had a 99% chance of securing this grant but two things have me wondering now.
First the Port Authority members approved an inducement resolution that shows intent to issue up to $6 million in Recovery Zone Economic Development Bonds for Shamrock Town Center on behalf of Forest City Land Group and Osborne Capital Group. [notice how the name has been changed from Shamrock Business Park to Shamrock Town Center]
The project would pay for about two-thirds of the cost to build an overpass in Painesville near state Route 44 and state Route 2 over the railroad tracks to open up 300 acres for, pay attention INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT. Not one mention of the 135 $200,000 homes Painesville council approved to be built there.
An industrial development next to this community?
Today at the County Commissioners meeting two commissioners seemed "cool" to Painesvilles project. Commissioner Troy stated before the bridge should be approved the city should have secured a tenant for that area before looking for funding of a bridge to that location. What I found funny was the city is still selling this area as a Industrial, Commercial area when it has approved a 300 unit apartment[Cobblestone} 135 housing development [Forest City} and a 50 unit assisted living community for the elderly.
You have to wonder if the city manager along with the community development department understand what the word "industrial" means? maybe they do but they need that word to secure the grant?

In last weeks N-H TGIF Painesville City was promoting the industrial and commercial area this represents not a mention of a 135 home community approved of there.

Why would the city or the Port Authority not mention the new houses? That would show even more of a need for the bridge.

If the city manager thinks there are only 30 to 35 trains then God tell us why she needs a $6 million dollar bridge?

This ones easy. Its 30 trains when your trying to sell a $200,000 house,.who's backyard connects with railroad property. AND... 90 trains when your trying to get grant money to build a bridge. Which figure do you think she will use when she makes her presentation on the 29th?

Read in the paper about the Y's dream house. Does anyone ever think that Painesville city will get a dream house? Someone should ask JaHada whats he's done in the last 30 years to make Painesville a dream house city?
We dream but mostly nightmares around here. No to streetscapes and two votes in this house for the schools.

I don't know who to believe you or the city manager? If your right she should be given the axe. If your wrong you should be sued.

Is there anyone who wants to donate a lot in the city to the ymca ?

The city has nothing to do with where they put a house.

Hows that go? Location, Location, Location. I'm afraid the YMCA will never build a dream house in Painesville City proper as long as the local schools academics are where they are rated, cheap electricity or not. That doesn't mean they couldn't have a dream house that would be in the Riverside district.
Quality schools make excellent cities.
Please don't take that statement to mean lets throw some more money at the problem.
A resident once told me if the district Dr. Hanlon children ever proposed a 50% grading policy, he would oppose it to no end. I tend to agree with that person.

A little history lesson on my life (a typical citizen) just to show why I made the decisions I have made over the years because I think most people think the way I think about Painesville.

I used to own a house in Chardon. I divorced my husband and I wanted to downsize. I chose Concord, even though it would cost me more money to live there because I had school-age children, and I did not want them to grow up in Painesville or to go to Painesville schools. (And that was before the 50% grading policy.)

After my kids were out of school, I sold my condo in Concord and bought a house in Painesville to live a little cheaper and to save money on electricity and water.

If for some reason, I ended up with another school-age kid in my house, I would move.

I think we need to judge our city and the work of our city leaders on this attitude of myself and so many people. Add the 50% policy and the sanctuary city on top of it, and I do not believe we are having a successful city. When I talk to outsiders about Painesville, these are the things that they think also. There are some very fundamental problems here that need to be addressed.

At June 28, 2010 at 7:02 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

That is the fallacy with some of our community leaders. Yes you can sell a house in Heisley Park because its in the Riverside district, and not the city schools. Housing projects in the Painesville local schools will be a hard sell. This community cannot rely on people on pensions or without children.
Now take a home that was recently built on Cedarbrook check the taxes on that home. Now find a like sized home in Liberty Green and check the cost of property tax.
Yes both homes are in the city ,both have the same police and fire, along with the same utility rates. Explain why the property taxes are cheaper in Liberty Greens?
Before Painesville can become what we all want. The schools have to be fixed. Nice new buildings but higher graduation numbers and test scores count more to people looking for an excellent education for their children. Along with a change in attitude from " I work with what is brought to me."

To 5:36...my parents moved from Cleveland in the early 60's to Eastlake primarily because of the schools. Their decision to move was based almost entirely on where my sister and I were going to go to school. You are absolutely correct when you say good schools are a fundamental consideration when relocating (or staying). If Painesville wants to attract homeowners that are committed to their community and their kids' education then sweeping changes are necessary.
There has been numerous studies done about how to turn around badly performing school districts (generally urban or rural) Painesville may be a suburb of Cleveland but it has metropolitan problems...the schools being one of the biggest. They already have new facilities, the teachers are adequately compensated and qualified and what is spent per student is right up there with better performing districts. In my book that leaves the administration. An entrenched group led by a man that doesn't even want to be there (how's that job search going Dr Hanlon?) doesn't leave much room for innovation or creativity. The Painesville Board of Education pays lip-service to the community and rank-and-file teachers and yet nothing realistic or workable is accomplished. Drastic times call for drastic measures and I do not mean punitive or self-serving ones either. Teaching to a student body of which the majority is considered to be "economically disadvantaged' requires a special set of skills and outlook. Cutting support staff guts an already struggling system. Having only a small number of parents willing to be involved puts the kids at a disadvantage from the very beginning. There are no easy solutions to Painesville schools' problems...but there has been other success stories out there that had the same givens. We need a new administration that can think outside the box.

To Rew: Yes, and dumbing down the whole school with a 50% policy because the city has been made a sanctuary city cut it off at the knees. Painesville already had a very bad reputation because of minorities.

My neighbors just had to have a conversation with their children about reverse discrimination because their child is being harrassed so bad. I advised them to relocate the child to Fairport Harbor schools.

Unfortunately, Mike Mohner announced his retirement today. He will be missed. He was one of the good guys.

Yes, Its going to be hard to replace Mike. We most keep faith that someone just as good will aplly for the job. I don't want to bash the school board or the administration but tell me does anyone up there have a child or granchild in the system? It seems that just might have something to do with our performance?
Wednesday night the schools probably will come looking for a levy. A quick note to Mrs. Hada. Don't tell us that even with the additional 6 mil levy we will still have to make drastic cuts. Most people will take that to mean what's the difference between drowning in ten feet of water as opposed to twenty feet?

Last August there was an opening on the School Board. The Board interviewed 5 residents and appointed the candidate who never attended our schools or has a child in our schools. Can anyone tell me the other 4 residents? Is that even available to the public? Nothing agaist Mr. Erbar but he's no Sean Sibert.

At July 2, 2010 at 5:42 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I have great respect for all the members of the school board. My problem is with the young adults and parents with children in the school system thaty don't seem to take on ther responsibility. Mr. Steve Costell seemed to be the only member of the community that has run for that position that has children in the system. Maybe some of these established older members feel they need to stay on board because more people don't show interest the position. How old was Mrs. Hada when she ran for the school board or again Sean Sibert? I believe the motivation for both had to have been their children"s education.

At July 2, 2010 at 6:00 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

In my opinion, without having children in the district, board members are clueless. When their children come home & report what goes on, they are very much aware of the situations.
When was the last time board members stepped into the school building while school was in session. They need to be visible in the school building and classroom so they can REALLY see just what a teacher has to handle everyday.

At July 6, 2010 at 5:35 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'll repeat what I said earlier. I don't have anything against John Erbar, but I don't have "great respect" for our newest Board Member. He never ran for that office. He never attended City Schools. He has no children in our schools. He's unproven. Term critised a S C member for not attending prior meetings. I was told that the first meeting J E attended was his swearing-in meeting. Does anybody know the other 4 canidates? Was Mr. Costell interviewed?

At July 6, 2010 at 7:09 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

5:35 I criticized who? I thought fresh blood on the board would be a good idea. Mr. Costell is a father with children in the system and that carries a lot with me. We need more young people stepping up, not less.
Mr. Erbar could make an excellent board member. My thoughs were does anyone on that podium have a child or grandchild that is in the system?

At July 6, 2010 at 7:27 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I kind of have to go along with Term here...there isn't anything inherently wrong with some of the board members not having children in the system...but ALL OF THEM? (Including the top level of administration too) Wouldn't you think a younger member with no children might have alittle more time to devote to the job and hopefully a fresh outlook too. A mix of both would be the ideal here. Wonder what the mix is on other local school boards?

At July 7, 2010 at 12:51 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't believe I'm disageeing with Term. On May 12 He critized the appointment to the safety committee of "a former city employee who I've not sen at a safety meeting let alone a city council meeting in sometime." Then Term questioned "if you have people interested, why get someone who has shown zero interes?" That's a very fair critism and question.
I simlpy attempted to make the same point with the John Erhbar scenario. He seems to be a fine young man with no history with our schools, no children in our schools, never attended a Board meeting and never ran for boardmember. It appears that he showed "zero interest". He is am unknown enity.
Now there were 5 residents who applied but no one seems to know who they are. Maybe they are all axe murders and the decision was a no brainer for the board. Or maybe... I'm just too suspicious.
I hope John runs for re-election. I hope along with his fresh blood he brings fresh ideas. I plan to vote for him because a young unknown is still better than the staus quo
I also voted for Steve Costell because I saw him attend board meets and speak up in a constructive way. Oh yea, I also liked the fact that he has 3 kids in the system. Steve, if you're out there lets us know were you one of the 5 candidates? If so, why didn't they pick you? Oops, there I go with that suspicious attituded.

Checking into a rumor presently. There just might be a opening on the Painesville School Board as I find more information out.
This is an oportunity to let board members know you want mr. Costell on the board he is the ONLY resident in town that even ran against the incumbents last election. It seem fair to say he wants to serve the community.
I guess we'll all know on july 12, 2010.

Now look at the last paragraph of the "Rescue Me" post on May 28,2010 Then read Thursdays News-Herald and see where a certain figure [$195,000] comes into play. Before I posted it I knew it would eventually show up. Hope your not one of the rabbits.

She jumps ship right before they g ask for a levy? Maybe some on the board didn't see it her way?
Good riddance shes gone,21 years of plaudts for little shown. now if a few more would fall on their swords.

Here's an interesting tidbit/prediction for all of those watching the school board drama unfold. The person replacing Mrs Hada is an hispanic woman...known for her devotion to city schools. Guess no one else even has a chance. I'm not saying she isn't qualified for the position...but it sure APPEARS like the school board is stacking the deck.

Mary Hada had no idea how busy she was going to be last November when she ran for office? Lame, this is just the way the people in power avoid an election. That whole board should be replaced along with Hanlon. Never has some much produced so little.
Want a levy first show us savings your planning to make. Privatize the bus transportation are you educating children or running a bus company? ask teachers fore a pay cut. Really many of us have to keep our jobs.
Anyone can be serve the public when times are good wasn't Mary up to making tough decisions?

Might just be the start of many changes. One member just might be moving out of the city onto the hill overlooking it. Strange same scenario as Mrs. Hada?
Lets keep it under our control.

Maybe Mr Hada will want to include himself in whatever it is that Mrs Hada resigned to devote more attention to ...council can fill his position by appointment until the next election for his seat and hold onto their nefarious majority at least until then. When the bill for Amp-Ohio comes due he would be a private citizen and wouldn't face as much heat as he would as an active council member. Please be advised city council...there are enough citizens out here concerned about that pending gigantic bill that you won't be able to sweep it under the rug or bury it in something else.
