"HOT FOR TEACHER"

Painesville school superintendent Dr. Hanlon fires all teachers and administrators at T.W. Harvey High School with full blessing of the school board.
Couldn't happen you say? I hope your right, but a school system in Rhode Island did just that.
I read the report, those damn union teachers are destroying a high school.
All 88 teachers. Not 25 or even 10 good educators in that building?
Were they all incompetent? Only 48 percent of the student graduated in 4 years.
Lowest proficiency scores in the state. Math 7 percent, 55 percent reading, 33 percent writing. Its about time we get rid of these high school teachers.
Then a little bulb went off in my head, somethings wrong with this story. As the late Paul Harvey used to say "and now the rest of the story." First off if your building a house and it collapses while the roofers are nailing the roof on, is it the roofers fault the house came down? What about elementary, and middle school teachers?
Then again dig a little deeper and look up the makeup of the student body. 14 percent white, 13 percent black and 63 percent Hispanic that come from migrant family's that speak English as a second language. You wonder why no one is passing proficiency tests? Its pretty hard if you can't read or write the language.
Someone must be held responsible, why not the teachers. It ironic if the very people who go to bat for these children will someday find themselves on an unemployment line for a failure they had no control over.
Oh, and to the Superintendent in that system the teachers need not work for free, and they should be able to eat lunch with whom they choose to.
Only in America.

Council Meeting Monday 03/01/10
A deal with AMP-OHIO will be discussed, along with petty cash.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

I watched the President of Toyota North America explain that Toyota had a misconception of how we would use their vehicles?
I thought this guy must be the dimmest CEO in the world.
A few days later Sea Worlds CEO arrived on the scene to make a liar out of me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Council meeting went pretty much as planned. The petty cash issue passed, along with the new AMP-OHIO Landfill Gas Electric Purchase. I don't understand this one. How much electricity will we get out of this, enough for one home? Maybe I misunderstood something.
Andy Flock put the Clean Ohio Grant for the Hospital on first reading only to have a chance to read it. Hal Werner asked what would happen if the grant money doesn't cover the costs?
Lori DiNallo wants to change the language and restrict inspectors rights to view your property without the homeowners approval.
Painesville Police officers were given awards for service and special duty beyond the call.
Chief Smith was thanked and will be missed by all.

Our 50% policy may start to make sense. Wonder what our grad rate would be without it?

Best to Yvonne's Sweet Shop! If you haven't been there - go!! She has the BEST sweets I have ever tasted! Everything is REALLY homemade! What a great success story for the city of Painesville! And all this plus she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet!

Term, does it look like they are going to have a final vote tomorrow night on the new AMP-Ohio landfill deal without us knowing what we owe for the last AMP debacle?

11:24 I can only hope that council has the wisdom to table this. First off its not that much power and its not cheap.
Before Painesville moves forward with anything else concerning AMP-OHIO it would be nice to know where we stand on Meigs County.
A prudent company like AMP-OHIO I would hope understand this.

Mr. Term:
Still waiting for the $$ numbers that you found if the city were to have (or be a part of) the localized wind farms.
No AMP Ohio, just the city as the only owner.
Come on term, you told this to me, now share these numbers with others so that they can see that it is more "financially responsible" than the CM's
proposal(s) with Amp Ohio.

You can do this, as I have great faith in your research and your ability to inform others in a manner that is most understandable.

Go for it Term.

Have not forgot you, it seems the numbers change daily. The key is to figure out how much "base" power can be produced with a 37 million dollar investment in wind power.

The move to Roberto's will be most welcomed by us as everything she makes is out of this world!!!

Best wishes to Yvonne, and bring on the home-cooking!!

So glad that she did not permanently leave this town: and, so glad that another Mexican restaurant is not being established again - enough is enough. A true Family Style restaurant is much needed in these parts: not to mention a true wholesome atmosphere to bring our children and grandchildren out to eat.
From here, we the people should give the big shove (for all the acreage P'ville owns) to bring-in what is needed in this community so we do not have to drive and drive to make our purchases. Can't purchase daily/monthly needs from new homes/condos/apartments!!

A certified contract for base figures with AMP Ohio change daily also - if the long term contract with AMP Ohio has this built into the signature line - and the signature line accepts long term unidentified debt.

The wind power plant for the P'ville area (which can service many other communities) can be written so that any extra costs can be downsized: because, the city will be the absolute Owner and not owe anything to anyone else. The community writes the rules, not a second party.
I equate this to a new business that rents where there business is. Hard to make a profit when your biggest expense is renting. When you own, you make money, and the costs for the business are lower if you play the cards correctly.
No one profits off the back of others. You profit off your own back.

Forgot to mention what you shared with me.
You gave me the exact figures for AMP power versus wind power ownership - base load power.
Winder power ownership walked all over the 50 year commit to AMP Ohio.
Believe in what you discovered. Pick a date and provide some type of figures as a base and all of the parameters of True Ownership.
No one will fault you, as all prices these day do increase.

Whole point here, is better base load rates from pure ownership instead of a dictatorial system by AMP Ohio who will always reap a profit off of communities instead of the communities gaining a better way for themselves.

Have any of you any knowledge of something called the Bloom Fuel Cell that converts natural gas into electricity that could power our homes?

At March 1, 2010 at 9:31 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

For 5:12pm, AMP is a non profit Corp. so your last paragraph does not make sense.

At March 1, 2010 at 11:26 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

To 9:20 about the Bloom Fuel Cell. I saw a program about it and did just a little research on it. Isn't it a fantastic looking idea? I think it's just the beginning of an amazing concept. Right now some big companies are trying it out. I think Apple and eBay are two of them. I saw them interview the eBay guy, and he was thrilled with it. Said it had saved them a huge pile of money so far. I guess it still needs to draw power from a source, but apparantly it is very little, and it does the rest itself.

This invention, and everything else that is going on out there, like the wind (box?) things, is amazing. That's why one of my questions to the city is how much extra energy do we think we are going to need and when, because all of this stuff is out there, and who knows what will be going on in a year or ten?

It looks like companies, for one, will probably be buying their own wind machines or fuel cells, etc., and not needing as much, or any maybe, outside energy from the city. It also looks like sooner than we could have ever imagined, homeowners may be able to do the same thing. It will probably be like we have our furnaces now, but instead we'll have our own fuel cell or something similar.

Definitely not the time to get into a 50-year coal deal for Painesville.

9:31 If someone is non-profit it not the same as a not for profit. AMP-Ohio has every intention of making money. These people are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. I believe it is there goal to control supply and prices to Municipal owned Electric operations. I have been doing alittle research and they don't build power plants out of kindness.
5:12 point is well taken. and true.
We will soon learn that we should never got into bed with them, period.

Term - your story about HHS is funny. Do you have ESP? According to a memo sent by Dr. Hanlon, some school employees will not have a job for next year. The affected parties will be notified by April 30th. As for who goes - who knows? Could be support staff, teachers, administration or a combo of all. (I smell a new levy come November) I can give you my vote right now - N-O!

The incident in Rhode Island is true. Yes, it could happen here. I don't know about November, but there is a renewal levy in May. I wonder how people will feel renewing that and also seeing saff cut?
I'm interested in what kind of solution the Rhode Island firing will bring.

Term, did someone explain during the meeting why we are getting into that landfill deal with AMP when it is only enough to power one home? I was not at the meeting. Did someone ask McMahon what is the ulterior (not necessarily bad) motive for doing this? It certainly is not for the electricity it will produce.

Congratulations to Lori DiNallo for trying to do something about the inspector problem. If they have to get permission from the homeowner to be on their property, that will go a long way to getting this terrible problem under control, especially if the homeowner understands that they do not have to give permission. That's a very good idea. I hope she is successful in this endeavor.

Did anyone mention that Zaremba Construction is having financial problems? This is another scam by Joe Hada and Rita McMahon nothing will be built on the site that they have planned. When will you people wakeup?

It was only a matter of time before that inspector crossed the wrong person, with a little luck she will now be able to see violations from her car. I know I do. She just won't be as selective on who she writes up.
I can only hope she is the exception of a Painesville employee and not the standard.

interesting observation about the Rhode Island high school story. I recently read the ever-so-politically correct New York Times account (no surprise there!), and not once does it mention the overwhelmingly Hispanic makeup of the student body! (big surprise). Yes, the language barrier obviously must have a lot to do with the poor graduation rate. (Here's the link to the NY Times story: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/24/education/24teacher.html)

I think something that is being missed about the bad graduation rates among the hispanics is that, as far as I know, most of them do not value a high school diploma. This is another reason why their country is the way it is, and how they are pulling our country down.

At March 4, 2010 at 3:18 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I have no idea if your right or wrong. Sooner or later it becomes a good idea to have your children receive as much education as they can.

At March 4, 2010 at 8:18 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've said this before, and I'll say it again - we are going to politically correct ourselves right out of a country. If the New York Times can write about a school that is failing because most of the students are hispanic and never say that most of the students are hispanic...

At March 5, 2010 at 12:41 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

During the news clip I saw on TV about that Rhode Island school, they never once mentioned that the reason for the failures was because of the huge hispanic numbers in the school. At one point, one of the teachers said something about how they weren't taking into account what they had to deal with there. It left me wondering -- WHAT? I'm sure she went on to explain, but it was cut out, and the news station never explained. Maybe the Mexicans are right and we're just too stupid to have America. If anyone would have told me that almost our entire country, including our government, would sit on their butts and let this country be taken over without one shot being fired by the invaders, I would have never believed it. Certainly my grandfather's generation would never have let it happen. The Mexicans know they are taking over America, while our news media can't even utter the word hispanic.

You can rest assured it isn't the Hispanic population only that is driving down our graduation and standardized testing scores..they were below average well before the Hispanic population overwhelmed our area.

You want to talk about issues with the school district..what is wrong with it, well consider this. As many of you are aware, Painesville City schools has implemented a dress code consisting of uniforms. Good..bad or indifferent in your views ( I happen to like the idea) of this policy, I THOUGHT it was a mandatory policy by Dr. Hanlon to be enforced in all the schools. Well, my children have to wear uniforms, but apparently the Principal at the high school doesn't believe in such rules. I had the opportunity to walk through Harvey High School recently. I passed students with hoodies, jeans hanging half down their behinds, high-top and skateboarder shoes..etc..etc. So of course I inquired, well not only does she thinks this rule is stupid, but she even went so far during a recent speech at a local church to say that she doesn’t agree with and will not enforce the uniform code..

Excuse me, not only are you disobeying a school directive, but then you go before a church congregation and tell them you’re not going to follow my directive, who do you think you are??? How about start looking for another job, make sure you tell them “I do what I want”. I want a high school Principal who is willing follow directions vs. trying to be their students best friend.

While uniforms may be petty issue to some, instead of bashing Dr. Hanlon and Company (believe me I’m no fan of him) and the Hispanic population..hmm..maybe you should delve into the happenings at the high school and how it being run. Lowest graduation rates in Lake County..there are some issues. Just like we like to blame City Council and the CM for all of the city’s problems, what is going on at our schools and why are they performing poorly.

The problems keep coming, but no one at 56 Jefferson St. wants to address the problem. Maybe there is a reason the city school keeps giving you only a one year contract. Someone needs to quit worrying about the race card and find someone else for this position.

I will follow-up on this the News-Herald posted the graduation results from Lake, Geauga Counties we were the lowest by far, most systems were in the 90% or higher Painesville City almost 74%.

To 4:23 - LOVE your comment! So true, so true! The BOE sets forth "rules" and they are immediately "adapted" to the individual student. This was going on BEFORE the dress code, it just shows more now. Great observation - glad to see that someone else sees it too!
