"SAVING MONEY IN PAINESVILLE"

As it seems apparent the economy has stalled, is there any ideas on how the city could save a little money in the coming year? Please serious ideas! If you see things that are a waste or things that could be done more efficently please use this post to comment.

Pave the roads so people can get to town! I quite coming into town so much due to the conditions of some of the roads. Amazing city hall doesn't get this.
There job is to keep the city running, we are crawling.

Why not let a private landscaper take care of the cemetary? Put it out as a yearly contract see if there's money that can saved.

quit paying 100% benefits to Gurley who is a part time employee, and emphasis on "part time".

1st - Pave the roads? Wouldn't that increase our budget?

2nd - A private contract for the cemetery might be a good idea but I would ask to see a comparison of that bid with what is currently paid for that exact service but city workers.

3rd - Cut the cost of wasted city time by not researching things like golf carts on our streets.

STOP THE COST OF SETTING UP AND TAKING DOWN THE ELECTRIC FOR PARTY IN THE PARK, CHRISTMAS, ART IN THE PARK, AND OTHER THINGS.

THEY COULD DO SOMETHING LIKE, LAKE METRO PARKS DID AT FARPORT BEACH FOR THE MARDI-GRA. PERMANENT UNDER GROUND & ABOVE GROUND ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION BOXES AND CONNECTIONS.

I BET NO ONE CAN COME UP WITH THE TOTAL YEARLY COST
OF THE LABOR, FUEL, MATERIALS, ECT. IT TAKES TO DO ALL OF THESE THINGS.

There is an meter reader that talks on his cell phone all day long, he could get his job done a lot faster if he would put all of his time into his work, pluse I wonder how many mistakes he makes when reading our meters, talking on his phone.

Sometimes he is working very late and on Sat.
Do we pay overtime for that ?

Mr.Gurley's compensation? Who do you think runs this circus, we call Painesville? Nothing moves without his O.K.
Why do you think he quit council?
He needs more than $6000.00 to do his job.

so, if we get rid of Gurley, then the circus leaves town? sounds like a plan. Voters, listen up. We need to get rid of Rita to get rid of Gurley. We need to vote in new blood on council to get rid of Rita. So we need new council members in order to get rid of gurley. Then the circus leaves town.

How about shuting off lights that are not needed to be on during the middle of the day? The new road off Jackson St.

Mr. Gurley is a full-time Law Director, whats with this part-time B.S.

Part-time full time whats the difference the city has still spent over a million dollars in outside legal help im the last few years, just let him do it all.

how can he be "full time" when he is a full-time law director for North Perry, and the assistant law director for Mentor on the Lake. He must have cloned himself!

Mr. Gurley is part-time. and he is the only part-time employee getting paid full benefits. Why is that?

At January 16, 2009 at 6:57 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous, it is not B.S. Get your facts before your spout. He is part-time, with full-time benefits.

Alot of people have more than I place of employment whats are you people complaining about now, try to hire someone at the price you pay Mr. Gurley.

Freeze all wages and pay grades if the unions don't like it , get rid of them too.

We could easily hire someone for a lot less. Especially if you didn't pay for full benefits. Add it all up. He is costing this city a small fortune.

Ok so we might save money but not doing it at all but your idea to put in a permanent under ground system is not too wise. The concept of the topic was to try and save money. While this might save money over the long term it will not save money and in fact would increase our budget for this year. Why not put it off until we have less financial stress.

Why do you think Gurley does a bad job?

At January 16, 2009 at 1:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mediocre, The city seems to be in constant litagation with someone, other government agencys, unions, employee's. To see what the city spends on lawyers is outrageous. Check around and see what other citys pay for the same services.
I have to agree with others his role in Painesville is larger than Law Director.

MR. GURLEY'S PRESENT SALARY IS $68,328.00! NOT BAD FOR PART-TIME! PLUS BENEFITS. CITY HALL EMPLOYEE 2

I let this post up because it seems to br inline with the figures I have seen, if it need correction please post it.
I don't know if this figure is in line with other communitys but I will check. I have no idea what benefits are included but I will try to find out.
Something to think about, between the city manager, assistant city manager, and law director were talking about over a quarter of a million dollars. Its up to the citizens of Painesville if thats a good investment to run this town.

With all the events that take place in Veterans Park unground wiring may be a good idea, plus it could come out of the electric fund instead of the general fund.

If Mr. Gurley is employed by three different municipal goverments why is Painesville the only one stuck with his benefits?

This means he is doing a bad job? Maybe he is doing a good job and not letting the city cave in and get screwed. What litigation are they actually in? Can you name some to me? How did you come to this conclusion?

"Check around and see what other citys pay for the same services."

This implies we pay more than other cities, but it is not really known yet now is it. Even if he is paid more, maybe there is a reason like additional work required because of the other services we have in the city. I won't except your portrayal without all the facts. This site has given me enough to be skeptical about.

68k is not that great for a lawyer. Good thing he is not billing hourly especially with all the litigation the one poster alludes to. The city probably saves a bunch by putting him on salary. I would hate to see someone making $300 an hour researching and addressing golf carts on our streets.

"With all the events that take place in Veterans Park unground wiring may be a good idea, plus it could come out of the electric fund instead of the general fund."

BUT this would still be an INCREASE in the budget in the short term. You talked about saving costs now if you want to change the subject to long term savings jsut say so. I don't care if it comes from the electric fund or the general fund. The money is being used now so if you use it for this, something else has to be cut.

At this Tuesdays council meeting , [MLK Holiday Monday] Our Fire Chief will ask for authorizing of about $150,000 for a "Fire Technical Resue Vehicle." Wonder if any council members will ask questions about this unit? Who else uses one? why the high price? where will you park it? what use does he foresee for this truck? Will they just say "yes" and park that unit next to the "Fire Bus"

Diane, a fire bus is an old Laketran Bus that for only God knows why we spent alot of money to refurnish, ask the chief its purpose.

"ask the chief its purpose."

Yes please someone ask so we can put to rest all the assumptions that it is useless.

Sure hope they can take that new fire vehicle up the Main St Hill........ Haha.
The road is so bad the new vehicle will need a new undercarriage after the first trip up the hill!
What a joke.......
or maybe they can take the money and figure out why the power keeps going out.

Ask the Chief if he had this vehicle how it would have made the flooding of Millstone and Gristmill more successful?
This man has a knack for spending money, load up your Bus , Buddie.
