"MR. SALTY"

Well Painesville what's your take on Painesville's new street salting program? I wished I would have had my camera around 7:00a.m. at Newell and Jackson. I wonder what the rest of you thought about the streets this morning? We went from piles of salt to no salt.

My opinion........ it's going to take some major overviews and over hauling because right now I am not impressed.

Would be interesting to see if the traffic reports go up through the police dept.

WHO IS THE GENIUS BEHIND THIS IDEA!
I THINK THIS CITY JUST WANTS TO **** WITH THE US.

This is why you need a Mayor someone who won't be able to pass the buck.

I followed a city truck this morning and he didn't even salt the intersections? Yes there was salt in the back, but it wasn't leaving the truck. Penny wise pound fool;ish.

At November 18, 2008 at 8:40 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is stupid. A truck might pass through an intersection to get to its assigned route and keep its salt until then. Maybe another truck was assigned to salt there. You should not double salt because some idiot who doesn't know your particular route is following behind you in a car. Give him a break, he saved your car from one more dose of salt.

traffic reports always go up this time of year, who are you kidding.

A Mayor would make sure the streets get salted? A mayor could not pass the buck? The grass is always greener...
Every government official engages in passing the buck. To think a mayor might be different is ridiculous. Look at Cleveland. Its obvious you are one-sided and close minded or do not know anything about either structure of government.

This site is less of a Painesville discussion forum as it is a rumor mill with the sole purpose of attacking the city that provides no real info or answers to the readers Have you ever posted anything positive about the city? The administration has done positive things along with the negative but I never see them on the blog so its not really "What's Happening Painesville" It is really "What's the new (or old) thing I found that I can construe as negative against the city"

Has anyone asked the city about it? Complaining always starts here before someone actually asks a decent question.

At November 18, 2008 at 9:01 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You mean not salting the streets was done on purpose? Dumb

At November 18, 2008 at 9:33 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This site is more of a rumor mill than a discussion form?... This site is here because I got tired of people telling me "I didn't know about that?" even myself I seemed left in the dark about certain thing, I feel I have posted positive things about the city on this site. Now ask yourself would you have read about 458 State St. in the Painesville Newsletter or the Painesville Pride? Would you have known about the 50% grading policy at the schools, or why there are not flags in the classrooms from the school newsletter? When has the city ever let you know anything "negative" about the city or its schools. This is here to inform thats all. Don't look keep your head in the sand and everything will work out.

Well as usual no one bothered to ask, but I did, want the answer?? I bet you don't really want the truth but here it is. Salt is double the price this year over last year. Reason, thank gas prices and the cost of doing business. So, instead of your City bankrupting itself to salt every square inch of the City, they opted to be frugal and hope that residents are able to restrain their crappy driving skills. I would suggest to be more careful and use caution in the light of this news. The City provides a great deal of services and the simple answer that salt will cost twice as much as planned, seems to be a viable reason for salting lightly. This coupled with the fact that it had to be delivered along with every other municipality seems to suggest a simple rather than complicated answer. Is anyone else as tired as I am of hearing that everything is a big conspiracy? Geez you guys get over it already. My source? I bumped into a plow guy in the store and asked him, funny, I did not have to give the secret handshake or anything, he just told me...scary huh? JT

At November 18, 2008 at 11:21 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

They didn't put any salt down at major intersections like Newell and Jackson ST. Bankrupt the city? They said they would salt major intersections. How do you salt lightly? No conspiracy just put some salt down. The County did, the State did, the township did. just do what you said you were going to do.
So you know I called the city and they said they dispatched a truck to Newell and Jackson after 7:00a.m.

At November 18, 2008 at 11:37 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

How do you salt lightly? Hmmm... Increase speed of salt truck while keeping flow of salt constant. Or Keep speed constant while decreasing flow of salt.
Asked and answered.

Mayor vs Manager.........

the real problem: Council doesn't understand Rita works for them. Council works for the citizens/taxpayers. Period. It really is this simple folks. I would rather have a manager than a mayor and leave the politics out of running the city. Council needs a back bone to stand up to Rita. No is a wonderful word and should be used often!

Mayor or Manager the problem is currently with council. I do think the city manager started out trying to do right by this city but as time has gone by she has turned to the dark side............

where oh where is Luke Skywalker when you need him?????

I am all for using less salt but there has to be common sense involved. Most cities in Northeastern Ohio have cut their salt by half, not just Painesville. Everybody is tightening their belts.

I am sure there will be revisions to some streets. Call Mr Lynch and tell him, I have found him a very reasonable man and ready to listen and address concerns.

I don't think it was a secret as it was brought up a council. They will also use cinders on the road, a by product of the power plant.

All that said if someone plows into me I'm not gonna be happy.
I also think it prudent to compare traffic incidents from last year to this year. It's the only way to really know if the salt program is a problem or solution.

I posted an answer and magically it disappeared - ??????
If you or the city fathers/mudders did not watch all channels this p.m., then you all totally missed the segments regarding Miracle Salt.
used in New York State for upteem many many years - it has saved that state so mucho money. This product is totally non-corrisive to any cement /metal structure (like bridges). You mix this with your regular amounts of salt products, much smaller tons and then spray with a liquid magnesium product (also non-corrisive and great on price) and you have one heck of a mixture to salt the roads, insure non-corrisive problems - and: band roll, it is quite in-expensive.

Same old policies of purchasing, same old policies to deal with the everday tasks - is not thinking out of the box!!

City officials, stay alert, watch and absorb what other great states/communities have ACCOMPLISHED - then reset your agenda to embrace one method to cut your costs - so that you can accomplish what needs to be accomplished.
I, for one, do not believe that this city will go the extra yard to investigate this method. Why, because the City Manager wants it her way, and unless she pays more fees to an outside consultant to verify anything; it is just status quo, behind the times, and spend, spend, spend, and spend.
Oh salt prices have increased beyond our expectations - so we will just do a bare minimum program. I have not seen nor heard, at any coucil meeting, where anyone is trying to find the today methods to deal with salting; let alone paving streets. No paving program for 2009, just patching.
Take your tremendous Capital Improvement locked money, negate it in these negative economic times (as these projects do not hold water - well some have so much water that you will spend and spend forever) and concentrate 100%on what this city is, what it actually needs to stay alive and support what has been here for a long time and will always be here: guaranteed revenue.
Rita, you have absolutely no education in the field of bookkeeping/accounting: but, you are the micro manager of this department.Back-off and let the educated educate you on how to expend monies (our money) in the modern ways that will save money and at the same time allow this city to continue services.

As far as making this town a harder place to live...I really don;t think you believe that comment yourself. The mere fact that I like this town and ma a fervent supporter should mean that we are on the same side. We both have the same desires, just different methods of achieving them. That is all so Karen, I am sorry that your view of me is so skewed.

And to clarify another topic you mentioned MS Karen, I don't make excuses, they are my opinion and that is all. Enjoy your day. JT

TERM, you are a gentleman among men, thank you. I really do like this City and it is difficult to read negative all the time. I would love to see more positive things come to this City for sure, but I know my limitations as well. Others are in a better position to MAKE the change and maybe I am just and idea person, but I know where my abilities stop as well. There are many reasons that a person is not able to take action, some more difficult to understand than others, none-the-less worthy.

I will keep pointing out the positive things and have never knuckled under to pressure from outside my peer group, never. I am not weak, I just know what I am capable of getting done. I wish I was able to be in touch like you are all the time TERM, my ideas would have weight then. Just know Karen that maybe we could all learn from one another and my ideas could be the fire under someone else and change could happen, that's all I want.

Dear Former Finance,
I did not see mention of this new "miracle salt" you talk about on any tv channels but I did see an article in the NY Times stating the stuff costs $650 a ton and $250,000 to store. There is also a question that is cuts down on oxygen in the water when this stuff runs off into creeks and lakes.

While road salt runs $25-$40 a ton I wonder if a pound of this stuff would go along way.

Here is the link to the New York Times Article today.

I for one am glad that the City takes the time to decorate for the season. What better way to show off your pride then to draw attention to it. No matter what the situation a little pride goes along way. Think to yourselves a bit. Who has been laid off? I have, it was a terrible time and in fact right before Christmas. I made sure that regardless of my circumstances that there was a happy Christmas at the house and decorated and trimmed the tree. I think that feeding the soul is the first step to feeding the stomach. While I agree with being frugal in lean times, I also recognize the need for a bit of cerebral stimulation. Thank you Painesville for the decorations, no matter who the generous contributor may be.

TERM, you have the gift of an iron constitution I will give you that. Damned if you do, damned if you don't...JT

I also wanted to post that your car will stop on slick roads if you are not driving like it is July. Call me what you will, but when I screw up, I blame myself, I don't look to blame others. If there is a dangerous intersection or area like Main St. hill, safety has to be the priority, I am no dummy, and no hypocrite either. There is a responsibility to the City to protect their people, BUT, should not we all take some responsibility on ourselves. I posted a long time ago, if you see some trash on the ground, pick it up and be part of the team. Don't complain to the City because someone is not doing their job. The satisfaction that you get will return ten fold and the City will be a better place if we all treated our town like our most prized possession. So slow down, most minor accidents are avoidable if you take the pre-caution in advance. JT

Nice post MP. Others may not agree but after driving in from other surrounding communities, I was very happy with our roads here in Painesville. I have seen cars on the sidewalk in summertime too but due to driver error. Maybe that driver on the sidewalk should be a bit more careful and regardless of whose fault it was or whether there is sufficient salt on the roads, we should all be checking our tire treads and air pressure as winter begins. Remember the penny trick to measure your treads. Also, slow down in advance of turns and intersections. All good advice regardless of whether you are on salted roads or not.

Christmas is about the birth of Christ, and the city should not be displaying anything at all, that is the law, plus the cost can't be overlooked, there are other city's that decided not to display this year due to the cost, trim the fat there, or start laying off city workers.

At November 22, 2008 at 7:38 AM , Blogger Sandy Miller said...

Hey Mr Grinch,
As a Born Again Pagan I can see your point on Christmas. However I respectfully disagree with your line of thought on this. I don't think we should have a manger or star of David or pentagram, as that stuff is religious. Lights are different...... December 21st is the shortest day of the year for pete sake! I say bring on the lights!

We are the county seat, many folks make the trek here through out the holidays for things like Social Security, food stamps, health, courts, etc.........

When I was a kid and my Dad was laid off from his job at Road Machinery we knew it was going to be a slim holiday for us. My Grandma sprang for bus fare to downtown so we could see the lights and look at the windows of Higbee's and May Co. Then she took us to the see the Sterling Linder Christmas tree. WOW! She treated us to a malt for 10 cents in the May Company basement. It was great! My Dad didn't go with us but he was working in the basement when we go home. He saw our faces and heard us chattering away in the kitchen over a pot of soup!
I still remember the lights and good times. I can't say they were the best times but they were the ones I remember. I can't say we were all excited to eat soup again either.

So Painesville City hang your lights, please make them LED lights and bring Santa to town. If the lights go out in downtown the city really is dead!

with respect for all religions during the holidays,
MP

No, we need this time of the year with the lights and everything that comes with the lights. It is when the Northern Hemisphere is at the darkest. The lights or whatever your belief, brings hope for Spring. That there is something better on the horizon. When you loose your way in the dark it is the light that will bring you back to whatever your reality might be.

It is not a waste of money, especially with the new LED lights. My husband hangs miles of lights at our house and our saving has been amazing! The electricity cost of a string of lights used to be about $12.00 for the month, now we spend around $1.47, per string. I used cringe when he started the madness every year. Now I say go ahead if it makes you happy. He works cheap and he is very happy! LOL!

When I was in Iceland a few years ago I surprised to find out the government levies a hefty tax on each and every individual in the country for New Year's Eve fireworks displays! I asked the folks we were staying with how they felt about that. They LOVED it! We were invited back for the display. Their display is bigger than almost any other country's. I did not run into one person against the tax. Maybe Painesville should have New Year's fireworks display to get people here for the holidays and fill up some of these restaurants JT loves so much! Nobody else in the area does that!
