Wondering

Painesville City Schools Board Meeting:
Monday July 14,2008 next school board meeting. Wonder what the meeting will be about? As I sat in on the June meeting I kept hearing about budget shortfalls, caused my the State of Ohio, property taxes , ect. Heard about rising costs [fuel] and close to a million dollars in lost revenue.
Wonder if this is the right time to ask for a levy in November? Everyone will be checking out the new building when would be a better time to ask? The only reason I bring this up it seemed the groundwork was being laid at the last meeting. How do you feel about this, any thoughts?

Unfortunately, although I still own property in Painesville, I can't vote on the property taxes because I'm an illegal immigrant.......just kidding. I can't vote because I no longer live in Painesville. Anyway, everyone knew when the passed the levy for the new schools that they would be coming back in a few years for funds to operate them. It happened in the Township, now it's happening in the City.

I have three problems with this. The first is that when they promoted the levy for the new buildings, it was sold as "free money" from the State. I forget what the percentage was, but I thought it was around 80% of the costs was "free money." I don't think there is a printing press in Columbus printing greenbacks. That money was still money paid in taxes, just taken a different way. I know someone else would have received the money if we didn't, but please, don't call it "free money."

The second is that yes, fuel costs are rising for the schools. They are also rising for me. What have I done about it? I've cut back on my driving. Why can't the schools do the same? Eliminate some bus routes, as I have eliminated some of my travel.

The third is that we here all the time about falling property values, and it is true that they have fallend in Painesville. The only benefit to a property owner, is lower taxes. Now we could wipe all that out by increasing taxes. So property owners get hit with double trouble. The values fall, but the taxes go up.

The last thing we need in this country is more taxes, of any sort.

there is waste in the schools........... teachers at the every school pitch stuff that other teachers might use.
I do wish they had a newsletter between the teachers stating what they were getting rid of so the art teacher or other teachers might be able to use it.

I also wish channel 96 was more community oriented. What they are producing now is a start but it sure could be expanded.

they don't want parents involved but they sure want our money.

Since we won't be sending our buses to St. Mary's this year how does this affect the budget? and where are those kids going to attend school now that St. Mary's is closed? What impact will that have on the budget.........

Yup, we are all getting pinched! We just might have to become a community to solve some of these problems........... shocking.......

The selling point that a school board member told me was a saving on maintenance cost and energy costs. What happened to the savings? Sorry but the well is dry and maybe we should only educate childern who are supposed to be here.

Is the school board really so short-sighted that they couldn't see the need (whether real or not) for more money down the road? If so then maybe they shouldn't be the ones handling such a large bundle of cash. Even I know that if I buy something brand-new - it is going to require money in the future for maintenance and operation costs. The second thought is the insult to voters' intelligence...I'm just about tapped out with all the rising costs today and if I've tightened my belt so should the School Board. I really have a hard time investing in the local schools' future when even the President of the board doesn't see fit to send his own children to Painesville City schools.

I took a walk in Evergreen Cemetery last night and noticed all the names on the headstones........ so many I recognized as they are family names turned into streets and roads in our area. This area is rich in history and the people make it that way. Seems a shame to loose some of those rich ties to our history.
Naming the schools after some of those folks keeps the history alive.

Might be wrong on the Levy, but anyone at the June meeting had to see people laying the groundwork. Sorry I stil see one coming. Wonder if the city has been paid by the School System and Liberty Greens for the traffic lights installed at Kennsington & Liberty Cedarbrook & Chestnut?

Found out today Russell Hobart is back in town. He attend a class reunion on Saturday.
Hope I do not run into him, I am more than a little ashamed what the "Fine" school board did to his legacy, and we let them get away with it.
