" WHAT IF I'D BEEN THE ONE " 38 special

Could you read my mind ,could you take the time

We only now realize what a mistake we made!

Let me take you back over a half a dozen years ago when our electrical geniuses and professional informed of  the coming power shortage?

Oh, they came with there graphs and predictions and anyone who dared questioned them was viewed as the town nitwit's.

I had heard about this 'fracking' and what it will do to this country's natural gas supply. Yes I viewed it first-hand at  my sister's home near Williamsport, Pa. Still a little skeptical I stupidly questioned the representative from AMP-OHIO. "Look coal   will be number  #1 source of electric power for the next hundred years" But is it wise to invest billions into two coal fired power plants? Your three minutes are up Mr. Cimaglio sit-down. Then we 'Proudly' go where no sane person should!

Well and then our "Experts" as well as all city "Professionals" decided to be apart of a many billion investment in coal power plants.

Billions!

Construction begins on 799 MW gas-fired power plant in Ohio

Oregon Clean Energy LLC has broken ground on a new natural gas-fired plant in Oregon, Ohio. The new facility will have 799-megawatt capacity and replace electricity previously generated by a coal power plant that was closed two years ago, according to The Toledo Blade.

The new natural gas facility is located on 30 acres of land about one mile north of the retired coal plant. American Development owns Oregon Clean Energy and is developing the new plant, which is expected to cost $850 million.

"The Oregon Clean Energy facility paves the way for long-term future growth for Oregon industrial area," said Oregon City Council President Dennis Walendzak in a statement, according to local news source The Press, "It will provide many jobs over the construction phase and establishes Oregon as a leader in the energy sector in Ohio."

The Ohio Power Sitting Board approved the project in May 2013, according to Power Engineering. Financing was secured in November, and the plant is expected to go online in 2017.

No mention of any 50 year contracts, no take or pay deals, no purchase of a mine or a fly ash  mountain just a private company out to make a buck. I guess they didn't need our experts did they?

We lost 2.1 million on Meigs County who knows what the final cost would have been? Yet we know Prairie State cost's at least 6 Billion. If this Oregon plant comes in at 1 Billion we could have had the same amount of energy from two gas-fired plants. Starting to get the picture are you? We got taken to the cleaners period. And guess what,it could happen again because when I suggested deals like this should not be in seven individuals hands to be included in a Charter Change. Low and Behold it was shot down by Rita McMahon starting to understand maybe?

Martin O'Malley shared a comment a mother made to him in Iowa not to use the term "boots on the ground" when referring to military strategy. " My son is not a pair of boots on the ground " the mother told him.

All candidates should reflect on this to many seem to send boots without any concern for them or their families. These are the ones willing to sacrifice for us.

And going back those few years and now seeing just how much we were in the grips of a CM who thought she knew more than she did about all things electric here in the city of OZ. (in fact all things concerning utilities) And as I sat in those charter meetings with one other person who questioned repeatedly the reason a CM should be able to spend so much of a city's resources with the stroke of pen it it sure does inferiorate me. Maybe we should have fought harder?
And now, council with a vote and stroke of the pen could reverse this part of the charter and return this city to council and residents rather than an omnipotent CM. As we now see, the damage can be staggering ......and for 50 years. I hope councilman Hach will see the error of his ways and make the needed changes. Yes, the chickens have come to roost.

4:32 I learned so much from you and Richard about the subject. It is a shame with the exception of Andy and Hal we just might have been able to avoid all this?

We gave the administration as well as council the road map and for some unknown reason this AMP-OHIO deal was pushed forward. I guess now we reap the reward.

For the most part if this council was honest with themselves they would realize all the problems they have with the CM are due to the way the city charter has been structured over the years. A note until you give clear direction to whoever is CM it will happen again. Take back control of this city's charter!

I remember being absolutely amazed when I learned that the previous CM was on the last Charter Review Board.
Having the fox watch the chickens came to mind.
She was "retired", why would/should she have cared? BTW, I do not believe it was because she was a good, caring citizen.
I was really surprised when one of the people on the Board told me how the former CM fought against some of the proposed changes.
It seemed to me like she was going to get her way no matter what.
Yes, it looks like the members of the Board should have fought more and voted differently.
Now we see some of the results of not standing your ground.
20/20 hindsight (on my part) at it's best!

The charter only comes up for review every 10 years. There so many issues discussed we were very careful as to how many items would go to the ballot to be voted on by the residents. I wish I could remember how many we did send to the ballot. We did have to pick our battles. There were discussions, a lot of discussions. Now all that said if you read the charter the council can change anything at any time although I would like them to openly discuss this with residents.

Also wondering if any one on council will fill the void of Andy Flocks Town Hall meetings. They were informative and got the word out to residents. It was community oriented.

12:03 Hindsight? Well the game was rigged when the former CM was named chairperson. Try harder? No what if that committee was given the freedom to fix the charter? No you can be gone but not really be gone.

The chairperson was Jan Clair, and from what I remember the former CM did not have a whole lot more to say than anyone else on the board. There sure are a lot of people that have great hindsight to put down the process but at the time there wasn't a whole lot of us in the audience, maybe half a dozen on the best of days. The biggest attendance was from Fire Dept. members.

Hey folks. Educate me. How much effect does the current administration in Washington's "war on coal" have on our situation?

At November 17, 2015 at 9:52 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

4:57 Coal currently is cheaper than it has been in decades. Natural gas as well as a slow-down in consumption seem to lead the way. This is world wide.
I believe the contracts from the previous administration for power makes us 100% from the outside sources. I believe if we did fire up our plant we would lose money selling that excess power. Short answer Fracking not Washington killed coal.

4:26 I believe it was a co-chair I will check with someone on the committee, remember anything important coming out of that charter review?

Term, you are kidding yourself if you don't think Washington killed coal. This was part of Obama's agenda. Washington does this by placing mandates on alternative energy as well as subsidizing it. They also crank up the EPA to crack down on the coal industry. I work in private industry and have seen firsthand how Washington picks the winners and losers in industry all the time.

At November 17, 2015 at 11:28 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Did Washington also kill coal in China as well as Australia? Look coal is being replaced. I guess why does it bother you that we might be moving into a new era of energy? Coal plants are on the way out just like steam engines.
I will agree Washington does pick winners and losers look at our trade deals.

You are correct in the chairman's name BUT from everything I heard from members on the Board (one of whom has now moved out of town), good old Rita got her way on everything.

Ms. McMahon will soon surface again along with Bill Horvath over Painesville Senior Citizen Center.
Cut to the chase get the signatures and put it up for a levy. The city shouldn't finance this anymore then the Downtown Painesville Organization.

4:26 AM Because it directly involved them. Most don't even live in the city but don't take nothin away from them -Oh No. Anyone seen their new 1000.00 tv in the exercise room? Compliments of whom? And was this in the budget last year or because it flies under council radar because of the mere cost of only 1000.00? Who approves this stuff from my money?

1:03 Probably paid out of the electric fund? It does run on electricity right?

Coal becoming obsolete doesn't bother me, but it bothers those who used to make a living mining it. It should go away naturally via the free market, not being assassinated by government.

A TV in the exercise room is standard equipment. One big TV serves all and is cheaper than several. Your on a machine burning stress and calories and getting headline news at the same time. Believe it or not, healthy employees cost less in the long run.

Are the employees on their own time or company time when they work out?
There is a BIG difference.
Want to watch TV while you work out? Simple, buy your own TV. If that is what you need to work out, you really are not very motivated to do it. More like an excuse for social hour.

At November 18, 2015 at 9:07 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

5:56 Please help me where is this exercise room? Is it located in City Hall is it open to all employee's?

5:54 I have talked to many who's family has had to earn a living in a coal mine. Many are glad it's the end of the era.

At November 18, 2015 at 6:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who cares where the tv is and who uses it. Question was why and who allowed the purchase of a 1000.00 television on the taxpayers dime, lots of dimes.

At November 19, 2015 at 8:10 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

6:39 I don't even know for sure there is a TV. Where is it located as well as who purchased it?

At November 19, 2015 at 10:00 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If my money purchased this tv as well as the equipment in this exercise room, then I have the right to use it as well.

At November 21, 2015 at 9:17 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, you've made yourself a special guest of the schools, a vocal piece for the residents and you cant check out a 1000.00 story? Why pick and choose? Person said mr carson bought a tv for the exercise room why be a doubting Thomas?

At November 21, 2015 at 4:38 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tony Carson works out with the firemen - maybe that's why the tv to go along with the work out equipment. Maybe that's why the firemen are so comfortable knocking on his door. Everyone's a winner huh?

At November 21, 2015 at 5:12 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

4:38 Yup, everyone's a winner. Those damn firemen staying in shape to maybe save your a##? Look I am trying to understand your anger.
There's just so much more to worry about around here.

At November 22, 2015 at 8:42 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

WHAT? Of course the firemen need to stay in shape. Many of them work out at the y daily, before or after their 24hour shifts. What isn't understood is the need to pay so much money for a television. If they are too poor to join the Y then the money should be spent on exercise equipment not tv. Plug in music. And it's clear there was an ulterior motive to spend 1000.00 on a 60" since the city manager uses it too. He gets another benefit on the backs of the taxpayers. If the firemen wanted a tv they should have pooled their cash and bought one on their own, I'm sure the cm could have chipped in too. Wonder which fund that money was removed from? Education? Petty Cash? Bigger question, why is the manager fraternizing with the union members? You don't think they sit around talking about the weather do you? Maybe Mr Carson needs another raise to join a gym and leave the employees alone.

It is my my understanding that most of the fire departments in the area have workout equipment for the fireman to use while they are on duty. I guess the idea is since they are on duty for 24 hour shifts they can workout while still being available for a call. Not saying it is right or wrong just that it seems to be the norm with most of the fire departments. My issue has always been more with the whole concept of 24 hours on, 48 off which is a throwback to the 1800's when transportation was more of an issue. The fireman (not just Painesville's) have learned to work the 24/48 system to their advantages with second jobs/occupations and manipulating overtime to their advanatage.

A true man of your words? Not. This was just on your 11/20/15 post... 12:54 You would be amazed of what I don't print. Now you attacked a private citizen who left their name with a rude remark. Now if you want to tell her in person be my guest. Please don't use this blog. to hide Anonymously behind. And yet you let 8:36 viciously attack a city employee? And printed it? Just how many here are the perfect size to sit and throw stones? I didn't think so.

At November 23, 2015 at 1:26 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Attack? I viewed it as an opportunity/ suggestion to get to know his firefighters better? Hell, I think it's great that the CM spends time with them. Maybe every once and a while take a nap with the power plant employee's (just kidding) Look I would think it would be a great idea to be on a first name with all employee's union or not. Now you wanted me to call a private citizen by name? You are so gutless you can't do it to her face can you?
I guess if it's my blog. maybe I can make some of the rules?

1:11 here "Now you wanted me to call a private citizen by name? You are so gutless you can't do it to her face can you? AND I'm not the same person whos post you didn't print and to whom you just responded again. I just quoted what you said about saying things about others here. Guess someone must have insulted one of your friends for you to attack like that. But its ok to call someone you don't know fat right? i.e. try it, and everyone knows you meant - exercise.

My original comment regarding the big screen tv that cost 1000.00 was never intended to be as hurtful as these people commenting have been. Only to make it known more resident taxpayer money is being spent frivously. I see no need for the city manager to approve such a purchase to work out. Plain and simple, my money should not be spent on this. Council?

4:21 WTF are you talking about?

5:44 Thinking about it now it seems to be important to you. I'm starting to understand? Now around here I have been getting used to skipping over dollars and picking up dimes. I think if you really knew what was wasted around here that TV would be buried way back in your mind. Now truly if it is that important to you should address council as well as the administration at a council meeting. Let them know how you feel and let them all no presently you are unsatisfied with some of the results here in town. Who knows someone else might see you and come to council with their complaint?
