"YOUR POISON" alice cooper

"Running thru our veins, scratch that thru our bank account"

Remember back in the day our city leaders along with the buffoon's from AMP-OHIO told us one of the main reasons for the expensive power along with cost overruns in the billions was that Prairie State Energy would be power produced by "CLEAN COAL". 21st Century clean energy!

Now comes the reality.

Prairie State, wants a pass on new EPA rules.

In May Prairie State's chief executive, Don Gaston, writes that the controversial plant cannot survive if-under new regulations aimed at curbing carbon dioxide emissions it is regulated to a backup role in favor of cleaner sources of energy.

We were told many years ago by the snake-oil salesmen from AMP-OHIO promised many communities across Ohio as well as the Midwest that the long-anticipated EPA crackdown  on carbon-dioxide emissions wouldn't affect Prairie State. Proponents swore at the time the facility would be equipped with cutting edge pollution controls that could handle such regulations.

They asked that the plant be allowed to operate at full capacity which it never has. The plant operated at 59% in 2013, 70% in 2014, and 65% so far this year.

The prize of the letter;

Adding insult to injury.
"Should U.S. EPA fail to permit utilities municipalities to realize the full economic life of these assets. Prairie State's case our Owners could face very difficult economic times' ....Really like paying double the market price for power doesn't cause economic hardships?

Peabody Energy price on stock closed Friday at $1.60 a share.

Again more falsehoods or lies told to us in the past. I don't remember anyone suggesting that was just an estimated the plant would pass EPA regulations?

Now my question,  if BILLIONS were spent for clean energy, why this problem? Just maybe there is no such animal as "CLEAN COAL" and I will proudly tell you that.

Want to blame the EPA? Fine but we were promised cheap and clean while we got nether.

Solution?

Painesville shouldn't let part-time council members decide investments such as Prairie State. As suggested to the Charter reviews commission in 2010 any investment of over a set amount 10 million or higher should be voted on by the people of Painesville. That idea was shutdown by the Charter Review co-chairperson Rita McMahon.

The City posted on their website for interested citizens to apply for membership on a Utility Committee. What ever became of that?

We need investigations. And we need them to investigate the people who sold us these shams, and we need investigations into every council person who voted yes. And we can start at the top and go down. Didn't some of the entities that got duped into these deals start investigations? Can't we as citizens gather together and sign petitions and ask for investigations?

2:43 If you believe the hype we live in a city run by professionals. What became of that was it was filed in that circular file box that sits on the floor. No big deal it would have been compromised of people who will see what someone wants them to see. With no power.

3:48 Investigation? Are you kidding me? We can't even send a letter.

Term 5:11, then can we citizens get together and send and sign a letter? And everyone in office now that was there when all of this happened, or were there when the letter did not get sent, need to get voted out. Anyone running against them, please use that in your campaign.

As I learn more, it amazes me at the power the former CM wielded in Painesville.
Even once she was no longer the CM, she was involved as the Charter Review chairman and she still had too much power.
If she was not in favor of something, it simply did not happen.

I heard that Rev. Mirabel [sp] is circulating a petition for council. Is this true? Any idea which ward?

5:45 I'm open to ideas? Most people in Painesville believe AMP is an energy drink?
6:06 She had many years to build up these alliances.
7:00 Yes, Rev. Mirbel [sp] has taken out petitions to run in Ward III. Guess Mike will have some competition. As well as the Rev. has zero aspirations to be a Muni Judge!

Mike can wear his assistant district attorney badge to the polls and the Rev. and wear his crucifix. From a little higher authority.

Don't let Council members decide on projects worth more than $10M?
Let the voters decide?
On the surface of it, that sounds reasonable.
However the down side is that these are the same voters who voted for these very Council members.
(Or maybe they had no opposition in their race)
I don't think that sounds so good either.
Maybe the better solution is that the Council members need to understand the specifics of the deals before any voting and then do what is "best" for the City instead of trolling for votes (or worse, being bought).
Just a thought.

The crucifix, Jesus or God should have NO ROLE in politics.

5:01 If you would have been at the council meetings when these projects were discussed you might understand my point. Representatives from AMP and others spoke for at times 40 minutes on why we should be involved. Others as well as myself were given our three minutes and then told to sit down. Once council people from Oberlin came to council to explain the negatives. They couldn't believe how we operated. On getting home there CM was asked by our CM to keep his members at home. It was a done deal before it even came up for a vote. If residents had to vote on issues like these they would have to sell it to residents and both sides could be heard. Then again you might be right.
Council members can only vote on deals that the administration brings to them. Have you ever heard a counter opinion by the administration?

Term,
I was at many of those meetings so I know what you mean.
I guess I don't have a lot of faith in the voters to decide much of anything.
"Selling it" might be the idea but I wonder if it would work that way?
You can't ask many questions, and you certainly can't get many answers, in three minutes.

Like you, I wish I had an answer because what has been done in the past didn't work so well.

Regarding your last statement, you are correct.
The problem, as I see it, is that not enough Council members ask questions (or at least the right questions) to know what they are voting on.
Additionally in this City everything seems to be declared an "emergency". Therefore the 3 readings rules get waived and the item (whatever it is) gets passed the same night it is first heard. IMO, and "emergency" should be something that MUST be handled right now, not something that someone forgot about so it became an emergency.
