"ALICE'S RESTAURANT" arlo guthrie

Alice's Restaurant ? Well 75% of the song is about taking garbage to the dump?

Found an interesting story in today's News- Herald 11/11/14

Wickliffe shifts trash, recycling cost to residents

Wickliffe city council voted by a 4-3 vote an ordinance authorizing the city to enter into a contract with J&J Refuse Inc. a Kimble Company, for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection services.

What a concept? A city council that votes on services to be provided to city residents, instead of leaving it up to one person. I wonder if that's because they don't want to be bothered or that if someone calls to complain they can tell them "I had nothing to do with that."

Ever wonder how keeping council in the loop helps with costs to a community?

Cost to residents for the new trash and recycling is: $15.29 per month with bills collected quarterly. It includes a 96- gallon trash container, 64-gallon recycling bin and 64-gallon yard waste container which will be collected by curb side pick-up EACH WEEK .
The contract does give residents, namely seniors, some options to reduce costs.

Now compare this with what the last administration contracted you for?

Another thought now that the power plant workers are done stringing lights on the tree downtown, maybe they could grab a few trucks and pick-up some of these bags of leaves all over town? Not in my union rules? Exactly what is your job? Pretending your producing power?

As a strong union member and supporter the fastest way to get rid of a union job is have union member's sitting around not doing anything. Maybe that's the city's goal?

Wouldn't it be awesome if our city council was on our team like Wickliffe seems to be? If they were, they would insist Waste Mgt. match J&J or we would be calling on them! Simple economics and good stewardship for Painesville resident's dollars!

Yeah, we can't vote on anything directly BUT we can vote for Council members who then turn over all their responsibilities to one person that they select.
What a plan!!

While I do not want to see people on the unemployment roles, I also don't like my tax money being used to keep people employed but not actually working.

11:28 City council's are only as good as the residents expect them to be. Forget garbage and how easily they disposed of having to deal with that. Do you think if the residents hade to vote on these AMP-OHIO contracts with all the facts known would have voted for 30/50 year contracts? This bunch doesn't even research the purchase of a 23 year old fire truck. They have experts for that?
11:20 It sure would be. Although if you ask them most would tell you they are above average in running Painesville. Hey, They give and receive a lot of plaques?
I'm waiting to see who brags about downtown streetscape and cost's of it all on the 18th.?

Street Scape? Wasn't that done with grant money? Why should anyone but the residents brag - long story short- its our money they got from the grant to begin with. Where do people think grant money comes from? Trees?

12:26 yes there was Grant money but it didn't cover the whole cost the Grant was for around $900,000 and the project cost came in at $1,300,000 ? So where did that money come from?

Just an idea about AMP-OHIO attended the meeting in Galion yesterday. A councilman from there had some interesting facts. Since Galion and Painesville both bought the same amount of power and at the same time. Galion owes $1,020,000 in levelization. So unless Painesville has paid already I guess we can assume since PSEC went on line along with paying 61% more for power over the open market we also owe another million plus? I'll be writing a post soon about what else he shared with me.
On another note former CM Rita McMahon cousin is Galion's elected Mayor and a strong supporter of AMP. Surprised?

1:12 - isn't it ironic? If you put your trash out on the lawn too soon, or don't bring back the can you could be fined. But...when it stays out without being picked up that long, its not a problem? Should be able to access the city just like they can fine the residents then?

That was my point in the first place - my money paid for it all in one way or another.
