"FREEZE FRAME" j geils

It's so cold I'm watching the golf channel to try to remember what warm weather even looks like.

I'm going out on a limb here to see what you agree or disagree with me on this subject.

School calamity days.

Recently as last year Governor Kasich increased calamity days from three to five days. ( at that time he called them extra sledding days) Now he is looking for the state legislators to increase this amount. Reminding us that student safety is our number one priority. I agree 100% with that goal. He also sights this weather "wrecks havoc on school budgets and schedules" I don't agree with that. Maybe the governor has forgotten or never had to provide child care on a "calamity day" for a child or children not going to school as in this case four straight days? That can wreck havoc on a family budget  even missing work? also added expense.

Look teachers sign 185 day contracts, students are scheduled 180 days. Five calamity days are enough the school year should have to at least include 175 days, but then maybe our students don't need this amount of education? I understand teachers are under contract but if you don't want to add days at the end of the year, and Saturdays or add an hour to the school day to make-up for missed time. What are we teaching students on the importance of an education.

Do the bus drivers, cafeteria workers, night janitorial staff get paid for calamity days? Look my taxes never give me a spot to check off  for calamity days? Should the taxpayers ask for a rebate for services not delivered?

Just want to know what your thoughts are on this issue.

Having a brother who is a teacher, this is a little hard to write.

While "safety" of students is certainly very important, why can't teachers make it to where they work? They can certainly work on lesson plans, clean their classroom, whatever.

I worked for a private business and if I didn't make it to work, I didn't get paid unless I used vacation time. The difference of course is that we made widgets and we were not funded by tax dollars.

It seems like the only persons who get out of work on "calamity" days are the people supported by tax dollars.

Additionally, it makes me laugh when I hear that non-essential workers don't have to report. What is a non-essential worker and why are they only in government jobs?? Private businesses never have non-essential employees. You only get a job when a business has a need for an employee.

I guess I agree with you on this. Additionally, I would suggest that they forego the in-service days and such. Just more excuses for days out of the class room. When we were in school, a four day week was rare. Now they are the rule.

It is ridiculous. The legislature and governor are saying "it is a one time exemption." Well, what if the same thing happens next year? Why can't they potentially go to school on President's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, or add a day or two at the end. I don't get what the big problem would be. We are already falling behind the rest of the world in education. This definitely won't help.

The easiest solution, a school never closes. A "calamity Day" simply means we will not hold your childs absence against him/her if you as a parent choose to keep them home.

The calamity is that we are constantly told the importance of an education and at the same time some leaders in Columbus, with the stroke of a pen can cut 5% of a students time in the classroom?
We are just at the end of January with February still to come. It would be interesting to see how many total days the state feels a student can miss?
Maybe an education is really non-essential?

Don't expect one educator to question the need to make up the calamity vacation days.
It's just a gift from the gods.

A non-essential worker? That sounds like an oxy-moron to me. I think everyone who works is essential no matter what they do. Though many of the people I work with think they are extra-double essential, maybe we should throw that "non-essential" word around the lunchroom a few times to knock em down a peg.

At January 31, 2014 at 12:40 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Slow down 7:34, you're grouping your non essential school teacher brother with all public employees. Not all tax paid employees get snow days. As a matter of fact I suspect the Policeman, Firefighter even the Electric Distribution serviceman worked harder due to the harsh weather conditions.

This is 7:34.
Try reading what I wrote and not what you think.
I am NOT lumping my brother in with nonessential workers in any other spot in government. They are completely separate.
Nor did I state that ALL tax payer paid for employees get days off.
I did ask, what is a non-essential employee and why are they ONLY found in government jobs? I never knew of a single private business that has non essential employees on their payroll. Private businesses actually have to produce something at a sellable cost OR they go out of business.
My job was outdoors so I know the hardships of bad weather. I simply want to know why public employees are given time off for bad weather. As a tax payer I would think you would want to know the same.
There is no accountability in government.

As a teacher in PCLS, I wouldn't mind going in on snow days...and have on occasion...even last week. I can get a lot of paperwork done...I don't think most teachers would be opposed to it, but that's my opinion....

At February 3, 2014 at 5:26 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

There you go again 7:34, You said and quote, "There is no accountability in government" You are painting all government workers with a broad negative brush. I worked in a government owned utility. I never had a snow day, cold day or any other free paid day off. When I went on vacation they covered my position with overtime because I was essential. When the weather turned harsh I spent more time outside because of weather related problems. If they pay your brother to sit home when it gets cold outside then the powers to be have determined that your brother is non essential. By the way, my neighbor works at a private non government school he is non union and he was paid to not go to work! The problem is with the education system [public and private] not all government workers.

You answered the question I had with "I worked in a government owned utility". I completely understand where your point of view comes from.
You were a government worker!

You seem to be under the impression that I am blaming the "worker bees" (the folks who actually have work to do) in our government. Far from it, I am blaming the people in CHARGE of our various forms of government. If they actually were held accountable for their spending, I am pretty sure they wouldn't be giving days off, with pay, because the weather is bad. After all, the money they spend is ours, not theirs. Does that make it a little more clear to you?

You say "If they pay your brother to sit home when it gets cold outside then the powers to be have determined that your brother is non essential."
Are you saying that teachers are non-essential? I know I didn't say that.

Be perfectly clear, all schools receive government funding. I doubt that there is any school that doesn't get some form of governmental assistance. The reason your neighbor stayed home is most likely because all the public schools were closed and so there was no transportation provided. The fact that he is non-union had nothing to do with it.

My last point about schools (and this is not about anything else) is that I fail to understand why a school is closed yet the kids find their way to the malls, ski slopes, theaters, and so on. If the weather is so bad that schools are closed, there is no reason they should be anywhere else either.

Peace!

5:02/5:26/9:28 The question remains should schools have 3-5-? calamity days?

This is 12:40/5:26, Yes, I was a government worker "bee" and I'm glad you "completely understand where my point of view comes from". Peace right back at ya!
As far as Terms original question, right or wrong the State of Ohio determined that we have 5 calamity days for the 2013-2014 school year any more days off should be made up at the end of the year.

At February 3, 2014 at 7:17 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

As long as they do the REQUIRED 180 days, I don't care how many more than that they schedule. Leave that up to the locals but he 180 should be required.
The other thing is to not use them in mid November or early December when it is 20* and windy. Use them when they are really needed.

Even when we disagree with each other we still find common ground. Make up the days missed and if not why not?

2:56 Something to address the school board with on Monday?

I am looking into something Mentor has for calamity days called a "Blizzard Bag" anyone know how this works?

At February 7, 2014 at 9:33 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You had to opt in to the blizzard bags before the school year started. Basically, each teacher puts work online, and the students download, print it out and do it, and bring it back to school the next day. Considering many of our families do not have the internet at home, that was a wise move not to opt in...

At February 7, 2014 at 10:17 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

9:33 That's not how it was explained to me by a Mentor parent. This should be looked into. I believe today is calamity day 10.

At February 7, 2014 at 4:51 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's only 8, I believe, and you do need the internet,...

At February 7, 2014 at 6:12 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

From what I understand about the Blizzard Bags is you have to buy into them before school starts. Work is done online. Children that don't have Internet access are given a hard copy.

Your district has to have 80% of the children do the work or it doesn't count and will have to make up the days anyway.

Next year we will go by hours not days. Calamity days will be gone.

.

Im glad this blog is so accurate: You don't know about the blizzard bags and put out incorrect info. And what dif do snow days really make. Most of the kids DONT want to be in school anyway. Late, fake sick, hooky, skip or just have parent call them off. Then they become truent, go to court, order to back school, come back and start the cycle all over again. I blame it on poor parenting. Many parents just dont care and thats another cycle that needs to change too.

No, you didn't pay for 180 days, you forgot about the paid holidays entitled to. Do you get paid holidays? Im guessing if you dont you'll be after the employees for those next. WahWah

At February 9, 2014 at 8:39 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

8:20 What are you talking about? there are 52 weeks in the year 5 working day in every week 5X52 =260 take out 10 days for holidays and you still have 250 days. The school year is 180 days 36X5=180 that's what we pay for. Soon it might be changed in Ohio to hours. ?????
