"I HAD TO MUCH TO DREAM LAST NIGHT" the electric prunes

I'm spending too much time reading some of these comments on the blog. One mentioned 'yes, we have a problem in Painesville and what can we do to motivate the people to change things?'
Well... here it is... as simple as I can make it. Until we have a new City Manager, someone other than Rita McMahon,  things will pretty much stay the same around here. For example... a town of less then 20,000 people  investing in a coal mine AND agreeing to be responsible for part of it for the next 30 years AND including the "take or pay" contract and the "step-up provision". As far as I can figure... this AMP deal alone has cost Painesville $500,000.00 with absolutely nothing to show for it yet. Has to make you wonder why the person that brought this to council still has a job. Was she looking out for Painesville or AMP-OHIO? If you believe things are fine and dandy....then stop reading right now and do something else with your time. The reason the city manager remains in her position is  really due to one person. Council-President Joe Hada... who after this term will have sat on council for 32 years. I guess this town would not be where it is if he had not had a seat at the table for the past three decades. Now along with being on council during the time the city lost 3,4,5 6 million dollars on bad investments. {you pick the amount... it changes from day to day}  The failed AMP-Ohio deals, the city's actions leading up to the hospital leaving and still believing we can invest $900,000 { almost $300,000 of city money} on two blocks of Main St. streetscape to make the downtown vibrant again? At the June 18, 2012 council meeting, Council-President Hada mentioned all of the "others" in the 2012 budget were answered. Well I read the minutes to the budget meeting and... no, they weren't. He knows it, Councilman Flock knows it and the administration knows it. As long as Mr. Hada controls council, don't expect any changes anytime soon.
In my dream, a challenger came forward... someone who has never run against Council-President Hada. What if Councilman Andy Flock took a stab at running against Joe Hada... mano a mano for council at large?
People have mentioned that if Painesville had a Mayor's race these two would be the most likely candidates.
This would give residents a choice on the future direction of the city.

Now you have to wonder if TERM had a dream, or is he aware of something you don't know about yet?

If Flock promises to do his best to get rid of the city manager he has my vote. This is really a vote for or against Rita McMahon

Can't agree more with you this could be a referendum on how the city is presently run. I believe it is run poorly. I have seen some very poor decisions.

How can Painesville be responsible for a coal mine? Where is the documentation of what went on during this contract?
I see we're looking for a new power plant supervisor? Why what is that plant generating?

Councilman Flock mentioned two residents in Painesville, along with the blog. have mentioned something about Painesville viewed as a "blighted area" what does this mean and what proof of this is there?

What expertise did this bunch have to get involved in these electric projects? A coal mine?
I remember watching a council meeting years ago when some of these projects were brought up. The Amp person talked for over a half hour and anyone opposing the deal three minutes, I wondered the reason then and now I know. I believe as Term has mentioned this isn't the end, it's just the start and soon your family expenses for utilities will wake many more residents up.

One problem with your Councilman at Large scenerio is that it is not a man vs man race. It is the top three vote getters as the at large seats are all elected at once.

brew Sorry your wrong. Starting at the next elections you will be voting man vs man.
Remember the charter change Ms. Becks passed last year? All three council at large seats have a different start date.

Galion is in even a worse situation.

The stranded costs on the never built plant in Meigs county costs us 2,600,000 dollars for nothing.

500,000 on Prairie State for nothing.

60% of our electric reserve fund has been wiped out since January 2012. It took 15 years to build it up - POOF !!

After August the interest payments double for everyone on Prairie State regardless of whether any electricity is generated or not.

By the way, the petitions to recall the entire city council in Galion is now over 1000 signers, with a week to go. We only needed 267 to begin with.

Fist fights have broken out between multiple city employees over this ... the Galion city electric director and his stooge goon brother arrested for assault and battery ..crazy.

You people seem to play for keeps in Galion?
Painesville residents for the most part are still in denial, that said soon many will be awaken.
We even are spending millions to provide electricity to the hospital system that kicked us in the teeth,at a discount to First Energy. You have to agree you can't make this stuff up?

Residents in Galion are well aware of what these contracts with AMP have done to the community.

It's the citizens versus the city council now and at every opportunity the entrenched powers are trying to fight back.

The only problem is .. you can't fight back against all the citizens.

Seems like a baragain huh ?

I remember when it as 29 cents a gallon, 3 guys serviced the car, Mom got S & H GREEN STAMPS, us kids got free toys and candy at SOHIO.

Have there been any investigations started into AMP and these immoral deals that they have us all in, by anyone in power who can possibly do something about them? Clearly we, and everyone else who is under this horrible financial burden/scam need to try to find relief.

FROM THE STATE OF OHIO ?

Not yet, pressure is building though.

CBS 60 MINUTES news crew was in Galion earlier this week for a couple of days.

The city manager hid like the rat weasel he is.

Interesting? I wonder if some of the CBS 60 MINUTES news crew were the same ones that were here the last time Painesville leaders blew alot of cash?
We have ridden this merry-go-round before Galion.

Term, maybe you and some other city residents who are up to snuff (as much as you can be) on what is happening with these deals, could contact 60 minutes and offer an interview? They probably would not know who to contact here as far as citizens go. What do you think? Maybe you and John Murphy, etc.?

At June 23, 2012 at 8:59 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

5:01 Take my word for it the news crews know who to go to see.

I guess the main questions seem to be how did these cities all get lead into this deal? PrairieState costs were at 2 Billion when Painesville joined, now it is up to almost 5 billion, Where were the law directors of all these communities? Yes it may be legal but didn't they have an obligation to warn of the potential losses. did they? why wasn't there an escape clause? Why does Peaboby run the show with just a 5% interest in the project? What made these other energy providers bail on the deal. Was AMP-OHIO honest with the AMP members? How exactly does AMP-OHIO benefit from these project? Are they exposed to any loses? Do our city manager and law director know these answers? Do some other communities leaders know these answers?

The final question seems to be what information, who supplied it that was used to believe that by now elctricity rates would be over $100 per KWH?
There are some other questions but you can be sure investigator's smell blood in the water.
I willing to bet along with seeing Painesville's as well as Galion's City Halls you will also see AMP-OHIO Taj Mahal headquarters a picture can tell a story.

When this plant does go on line with 1600Megawatts or whatever don't you think that power added to the market at this time will further depress electric prices? Also the site mention here;

www.prairiestatecoalplant.org

Has many facts on it. The promise to Washington County Commissioners that no coal ash will be deposited in there county by the President of Prairie State now he seems to want to dump it on a site in that county?

That's a lot of extra power coming online, I believe your right.

As the officals in Washington County will learn when dealing with any of these groups AMP-OHIO ect. get it in writing, ever notice they do?

Term, you asked where were the law directors in the cities that got swindled by AMP-OHIO when all this was going on, and the decisions were being made. Our law director, Gurley was doing what he always does, and that is being a "yes" man to McMahon and Hada. It doesn't matter what the laws or rules are, he just says whatever he needs to say are the laws and rules to go along with those two cohorts.

The second part of his job is to intimidate any and all citizens that question and/or speak out against McMahon's and Hada's plans.

I am personally disgusted that the people in the city of Painesville keep electing Hada and Hada's followers to city council over and over and over again. The stupidity of it is staggering to me. Hada and all his "yes" people need to get out right along with McMahon and Gurley.

Oversupply of power, that an understatement to say the least.

Since the broke ground on the boodoogle, 3 times more power via wind and solar have come online in the same states this supplies power to.

Then on top of that, eveyday hundrds of hundres of peole switch old appliances for newer energy efficient ones, switch to LED lighting uses less and less and less energy.

AEP has no plans for the NEXT 20 years for any NEW plants.

1:57 I see it a whole different way. McMahon and Hada are pawns for the real Wizard Of Oz in Painesville. Law Director Mr. Gurley. Of the three who has to do the least of the three with the most reward?
The intimidator? Only if you let him, Anyone that addresses council should be treated with respect, and people who address council should show respect. The council-President should be in charge of that.

At June 23, 2012 at 9:25 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have never understood why Painesville pays Gurley a full time salary and pay all his medical and other benefits, when he works part time for at least 2 other communities. How can he be full time for us and part time in 2 other cities? He doesn't work 24 hours a day. And so much of the legal work is farmed out. Painesville is getting shafted here. What we pay for him is ridiculous! Come on people. Stand up and voice your opinion.

Term 7:15: I don't see it that way. I think McMahon and Hada are the driving forces behind all the crap that has gone on in this city since McMahon got here. I think Gurley keeps his cushy job because he says yes when they tell him to, and he says no when they tell him to. I've watched him virtually make things up during council meetings--whatever he needs to say to back those two up. It's a scary situation. Just think if they had a law director that wasn't like that. That law director would have actually blown the whistle on the AMP deals. Even the citizens knew it was a bad, scary scam. But not good ol' McMahon, Hada and Gurley. I sure would like to know what was in it for them.

Citizens Beware! of Terms planned Werner effect.
Let's say Flock runs against Hada and a third challenger enters the race? Arlene Becks, funny how she reappeared at a council meeting last week.
Flock and Hada divide votes and Becks wins the election? Hada's out, Becks is in and Flock goes back to representing Ward 1?
Werner won Ward 2 over four years ago but did it with less then 40% of the vote.
You might replace Hada but look what you get?

Term, thanks for correcting me on the change in at large elections. I completely forgot about that and man vs. man (or woman) does allow for a much better chance for the right perosn to knock off an old guard.

The change that really needs to occur is term limits!

At June 30, 2012 at 2:24 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Term limits would definitely solve some problems, but term limits is always a double-edged sword. If you get someone good in an office, then it is detrimental. Term limits always seems like a good idea to me at first, but I always have second thoughts, so I doubt I would vote for it for anything. Clearly, though, if the people were not paying attention, and kept voting people in like Hada, then the term limits would be welcome. It also would have forced out Flock, though, so? It's too bad that the voting public doesn't pay more attention.

Term limits? We have term limits every four years, if you keep retuning the same peoplw, what exactly do you want? I met a person the other day who thought everything in Painesville was great and getting better.
