" THESE LYIN ' EYES"

City Council meeting 04/02/09 Ordinances for Downtown Master Plan and Electronic Signs past. Resolution Final agreement with ODOT on repaving Mentor Ave. all passed with everyone voting "Yes".
City resident asked city manager if there was a problem with the people in Millstone getting therer money and goimg on with their lives bringing up a News-Herald article. The city manager stated all will be resolved within a month and the city will have the deed to the 16 acres of land. Ms. McMahon your on the clock.
Councilnan Werner showed some pictures of different ordinances being broken around town.
Councilman Becks brought up the fact she would be against the city rezoning the property at Chester and Chardon St. Also that the downtown hotel should be torn down.
Councilman Flock brought up safety concerns with the Cobblestone Apt. as to who were first responders if there was an emergency at the apts. Mr. Flock asked for letter on who would be first responder. Cobblestone seems to be in no-mans land. The city manager stated Mentor would not agree to it because they were not happy with Painesville developing Diamond Center. Grand River was having trouble staffing its station.
Right now let state that I don't think anyone cares about Mentor and Painesvilles "turf" wars only what happens if an 18 month old child is choking on something, or a 72 year old man goes into cardic arrest?
From my seat it seemed either the city manager didn't understand the concept between first responer, and mutual aid. Please prove to the councilman there an agreement or will we need a tragedy to find out.

A correction in this post I was under the impression that Councilman Flock had received the letters from the city manager concerning the other fire departments . Someone else at the meeting stated that was what the disagreement was about. The city manager stated she had sent all the information to Councilman Flock he stated he hadn't received any correspondance from her.

How long would it take for a fire truck to get to the apartments? The only way there is Rt.2? 10 minutes on a good day?

CM is right about Mentor, you want to know where a lot of that "lawyer" money went? It went to defend Painesville against the lawsuit Mentor brought against us because if we connect Diamond center by road it would cause "too much traffic" on Heisley. Wasn't it amazing that Mentor kept our possible land development locked up in court until finally Wal mart agreed to build on Mentor land, then "poof" lawsuit dropped.

Becks wants the Hotel torn down, great, did any of you whiners ask her where that money will come from?, or is she immune to your complaints becauses she babbles on about meaningless stuff.

Mcmahon on the clock?, jeez, get real, the timing on that whole thing is all determined by our wonderful court system and she abides by the directives just like everyone else. Why is she on the clock?, because she actually responded to a question?, now you know why they won't answer most of you.

That land was stolen from Painesville Township in the first place. Looking at the present problem, Mentor had more right to it then Painesville. The Township probably looks on and laughs. The question do these resident have the right safety forces in place?

"Councilnan Werner showed some pictures of different ordinances being broken around town."

Is he a cop or an inspector or a councilman? Maybe he should do HIS job and let others do theirs. You complain about selective enforcement but when a councilman you like requests SPECIFIC enforcement you commend him for it. You are a hypocrite. He can't just go out there an target whomever he wants. That is not his job. Just knowing who he is and what he is about, this question comes to mind: The violators of these ordinances - Does he have a beef with them or similarly, Are they hispanic?

If she does it are you going to sing her praises? Somehow I think this "placing her on the clock" thing will either fade away as if it was never said if she does it or it will turn into your biggest talking point if she doesn't. We will see your bias on this one.

Notice I said "your" bias as in the bias you possess not "you're" bias as in "you are bias", which I believe is the contraction you were attempting to write in "your" post.

I wonder how difficult it would be to connect Diamond Center Dr. / Brookstone Blvd to Jackson St or some other nearby road. It seems like there are already service roads running nearly all the way to 44.

Also, Passed and Past are not the same.

I wasn't praising Councilman Werner about thhe pictures, only that he brought them to the meeting. He didn't even give locations at the meeting.
I once had a boss who would ask me how long a fask would take. and he would always end it with, "O.K. your on the clock" no insult was intended by that statement, and I will sing her praises if its settled in a month that would be great for everyone.
Ms. Becks will not get a free pass here. I post what I get, and right now I disagree with her on the Hotel, and the vacant land on Chester St.

Anonymous complaining about Werner, are you saying that it is ok for these infractions if they are done by an hispanic? It doesn't matter who this violation is against, it is a violation, and should not be repressed just because it is hispanic. I just can't take this double standard any more. I have to obey ordinances, why don't they?

Thank you Hal Werner for trying to help the city enforce some of the ordinances. I hope some of those pictures were from my street. If more of council did things like this, maybe we would be able to clean the city up a little. I don't care whether the people who live in those houses are hispanic, black, white.... They are still required to obey the ordinances just like I am. As far as I'm concerned, it is Hal's job to help enforce the ordinances. If the city employees are not doing their job then he should step up and make the rest of council and the City Manager aware of it. After all who is the City Manger's boss. I believe it is City Council.

No this is not his job. You are probably one who complained about selective enforcement before. Council people cannot target whomever they like. THey should not be given any special authority in this avenue than a normal citizen. You need a lesson in city government and separation of powers. If he has a problem he can call the police or inspectors and ask them to do something about it. He can't use his status to push around the cops or anyone else. If anyone else put their personal agenda up like this you would crucify them. You are so fake. Sure council is the boss of the city manager. But there is a separation of powers and her power to enforce is delegated to those who actually carry it out, i.e. the cops or the inspectors. Give me a break.

anonymous, yes I can read very well, thank you. And I don't know nor care if those photos are of hispanics, the fact is that they are a violation of ordinances and should be cited. The hispanic population has an inordinate number of these violations so naturally more photos would be of them. Why don't you bring some non hispanic violator photos in. I wouldn't complain. A violation is a violation.

RE: Werner...I'm not wild about how he handles many issues, but at least he's doing SOMETHING and you can tell he actually drives around his ward and looks at things! That's more than I can say for Horvath, who was on auto-pilot for his last term (both in council meetings and in how he handled dealing with calls from his constituents).

Oh, and for the record, I didn't like either of them. I voted for Brad Deane.

"No this is not his job."

You are right, it is not his job to enforce the ordinances. I said "help enforce". You may have misunderstood what I was trying to say. Let me explain. Based on some pictures that Hal took, and from walking down my street and driving around the city, it is obvious that the inspector you spoke about is not doing his job. The inspector's supervisor must also not be doing their job. This continues on up to the City Manager. At this point it becomes City Council's responsibility to make sure that something is done about it. I believe Hal was just using the photos as examples. Without examples you really don't have anything to talk about.
Inspector, Inspector's supervisor, ......., City Manager, Council, please make sure these ordinances are enforced and make our city great. Thank you.

Surprise in November?, Ha, this site is really only a handful of people and the bulk of this city is landlords who don't want to be bothered, white and black trash who like the hands off policies, and uneducated who think pictures of potholes is what we elect council for.

This city will never change because even if you ever have someone run for council who can understand planning and work for the future of this city that person won't be elected because everyone thinks council should be taking pictures of potholes.

Most of the people posting here have no idea how to create jobs, no idea why retail stores won't move into this city, no understanding why so much low income residents is bad.

Just keep electing the Hal s, Andys, and Arlenes, they will make sure the 50% of Painesville residents on low income government assitance are happy.

Keep electing the Joe's, Pauls, and Abbys and the rest of the people posting here will be happy that they have something to whine about.

I know a bunch of great possible candidates and none will run because the majority of the people in this city don't really want a change and it would be a waste of time and reputation.

There is nothing wrong with a councilman taking pictures of violations. The code enforcement division is a joke. My neighbor would call all the time on the most borderline violations, and I would have to respond to the City. I sent about a dozen photos to the same inspector of my neighbor's clear violations of codes (garbage piled up in backyard, dilapidated fencing, building falling down), and they did nothing. But if I happened to have a small pile of leaves, I had to remove them (unless I watered it and turned it, thus making it compost). The code enforcement is a joke!

Maybe instead of taking pictures of violations, they should fire the inspectors that clearly are not doing their jobs.

Seems to me if a city truly knew how to "plan" the streets would not be in such terrible repair.

After all what is city management about? Streets, sidewalks, trash pick up, water removal and trash removal. Seems they have a bit of trouble on all these accounts.

It certainly makes one question about if those running the city are competent.

Anonymous, I too have the same type of experience with the inspectors. If I call and complain about a major violation, they then come to my house and spend a lot of time going over everything with a magnifying glass to find anything they can cite me for, but they don't even check out the neighbor with the real violations. At least that is what the one female inspector does. I am sick and tired of this.

I don't have a problem with getting cited myself and I fixed the violations with my house. What does make me MAD though is that of the 50 violations I pointed out only about 5 have been fixed.
