"STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN"

This story goes along with the city's $86,000 Downtown Master Plan. In the past council at on time or another has approved building homes below the river level[Millstone} . fifty feet from the mainline of the CSX Railroad {Asper Commons}. In a swamp.[Heisley Park] and if given a chance in the old Diamond Soup Pond. This time we have outdone ourselves, an old time resident sent me an email from the Lake County Genealogical Society about the Washington Street Cemetery. located to the east of Harvey High School that buried people up until the 1860s when the city purchased Evergreen Cemetery.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohlegs/painesville/washingt.html

Now reading the article no one knows for sure if all, some of the buried there were removed. No records were kept.
From the article:
The few remaining gravestones have been buried two feet deep, the paths trimmed and the undergrowth cut down and carted away. [These people could fit in here today}
A plat of the grounds was made by L.K. Pierson, to enable anyone later to locate graves.
In the ealy 1890s the Painesville Board Of Education saw the need to buid a new high school. The vacant land on Washington St. attracted their attention.
The City transfered the land on December 5th 1896, Since that time the land has been part of the high school grounds.
The fact that some of the graves had never been removed has periodically come back to haunt school officials.
Someone once made a movie about something like this "There Here"
I guess it shows you don't know where your going until you know where you have been.
A copy of the article was delivered to city hall.

Term,
Thought you knew everything, there are a lot of items about that cemetery and the other cemeteries in town.

The first one opened on Liberty street in 1811
you will have to look up the article in the news paper archives, to find out more.

The sceond one opened on Washington St. in 1822 they closed it in 1870, the buried that were not moved by there family, were moved to un marked graves and there stones were broking up and buried a few feet under ground.

The third one opened in 1860 on Main St (Evergreen)

The forth one is Riverside.

Hmm, so the land belongs to the school system, its use regulated by State laws at this point because the money to build the new schools came from the State, and you delivered the article to the city!

At this point in time the city has nothing to do with it, and you'll probably get upset when the CM does nothing.

Hey Term, how sure are you that your house isn't built on an old Indian burial ground?

Hmm, the land belongs to the school board? Why then does the city show it with houses built on the land and consider it part of the Downtown Master Plan? Come to think of it they are showing most everything on land they don't own.

Yes and that is called city wide planing, what is the big deal, you people worry about some dumb stuff.

two questions. where are the unmarked graves located for the graves that were moved?

second, Does the city own the Arby's property? That was shown on the master plan as not being an Arby's any more. How can the city make plans for property they don't own. Are they planning Eminent domain? Or do they own it to begin with and just leasing to Arby's?

If this is city wide planning, please help us. $86,000 study you would think someone would have checked. Some of the graves were moved to Evergreen Cemtery some not. Some even had headstones but no burial. Its going to be interesting what they find.

Our great Queen made the cemetery part of the master plan didn't she? Ask her why she didn't check? The information was out there. Oh, she doesnt do investigations.

This is called "planning". If you decide to draw up plans to build a deck this summer, how can you do that?, you don't own the wood. Why would your plans include wood you don't own?

You decide to save money or go try to get financing so you can "plan" on buying new windows, why?, you don't own the windows yet, why would your plans include them?

Your plans include "items" you don't own because that is a future state you would like to get to.

A city must do the same thing but the items a city deals with is land.

Does that help all of you understand the concept of "planning"?

No, when your deck plans go on to your neighbors yard or over a cliff would you pay for them?

What are you talking about?, over a cliff or on to your neighbors yard.

Are we supposed to understand what your talking about?

All I stated was if the plans don't work do you still pay for them? Not one person I know would live in a house knowing there was a cemetery under their foundation. Who check anything out on the plans? What happens to Arby's, B.P. I guess they don't figure into Painesville's future. The plans are needed but they most also be realistic. Someone stated the hospital will be demolished with funds from a "Brownfield Site". Yes how many people will want to live there also.

OMG, you people are so full of it, there are no dead people in the old cemetery on Wash. St., they were all moved, that was a long time ago, go read about it and get informed.

OMG, O.K. if your so sure build houses over there and wait for the lawsuits. The truth is is no one knows.

Term,
You did not know anything about this until last week, when someone told you, all you do is bitch, to make yourself feel good, you need to do some checking before you open your trap.

People that know the truth

Sorry, I guess I should have not let people know the truth? Why are you so upset anyway? The article was out there and I let people know about it, not knowing it was a secret. If you know "more" truth please post it.

Not knowing about, what are you talking about, it has been in the papers many times, and you think someone was keeping a secret, ask any kid that was in Harvey they know about it, my kids asked me about it many years ago, man Term, you act like there was some kind of cover up

The people putting the Downtown Master Plan didn't seem to know? Why would they build houses there?

The Washington Street Cemetery was the first FORMAL cemetery. I believe their may have been one grave on Liberty Street, possibly two. It was not a formally established cemetery.
