"IN THE YEAR 2525"

Very interesting meeting Monday night, a resident or two complaining about occupancy violations. Flooding problems in old and new neighborhoods. Heisley Park residents want a moratorium on construction until their basements don't collect water, even mentioned a class action lawsuit. Then we got into the master downtown plan. The intensity of wanting to tear the hospital down just confuses me. Where are the developers that want to build homes on that site? Who wants to live there? People are clammoring for a Grocery Store where was that in the master plan? The only thing bigger than a grocery store is the parking lot for its customers to park at. Where was the grocery store and its parking lot in the master plan. Maybe we all will take the bus because the BP station is gone, replaced by a Bus terminal. Arby's gone also. Is a it a grand plan, yes will it ever see the light of day I dont think so. The one thing lacking are major investors. The plans will be in place if some are found, leaders tell us. True but when your spending your money you probably want your own plans. Harvey High property, good place for college dormitories as Lake Erie College explands. I really think the right people could find a unique use for LakeEast amd I'm amazied how many people don't realize it will close in October. The right investor could make something out of the old hotel. If someone would give it a chance. Instead of more homes built downtown leave that the commerce and government district and revititalize old neighborhoods. A special meeting is planned for next Monday at city hall to discuss Stormwater Utilities. Heisley, Cedarbrook, Elm, Hine Ave residents 6:00p.m.03/23/09 Be there or stop complaining.

Hi Term,
Can you let everyone know, to watch Fox 8 news on Thursday around 7:30 AM, they were filming at Maple Elementary School today, they were voted
"COOL SCHOOL" of the week,
good job folks.

First, you might as well start sending your wishes about the hospital to Lake Hospital Systems. They own it outright and can do with it what THEY want. In case you missed it about a month ago the county gave LHS all the property its buildings sit on. LHS will not let that property become something that will compete with LHS, period. Get over it, the only control the city has over it is if they find the money to tear it down the Hospital will give it to them.

Second, everyone wants grocery stores, retail, etc. but when will everyone wake up and understand you need DISPOSABLE INCOME in a city before these types of businesses will build here. We don't currently have that in this city, hence the need for attracting people to live downtown who have disposable income.

If you think someone has the money to keep up and rehab Harvey high school you just plain need your head examined. They have had experts in urban redevelopment look at it as part of the master plan and those people flat out told them "tear it down" too expensive to hope anyone would want it. Also, that building belongs to the schoole system and because we got State money to build new schools there are legal limitations on what we can do with the old building.

Third, They have been trying to market that Hotel for years with no takers, what makes you think that they have been just leaving it sit? Sure, it can be used for something, but no one is going to invest in it until the rest of the area is developed into something that attracts business and people.

Term, your questioning is good for the City, but you should alsospend some of your time studying urban redevelopment, economics, etc. and then you would have a better understanding of what is going on and what needs questioned and what doesn't need questioned.

First off watch the council meeting , I never mentioned Harvey High School period. I know its days are over.
I have brought my views up to the CEO of Lake Hospital System.
Their are people today that want to do things with the Hotel.
Study urban redevelopment? I got a front seat to watching Painesville go down that road 45 years ago. I swear to you I've seen what good intentions by some have done for
Painesville.

Good post guy/girl above.

"I never mentioned Harvey High School period. I know its days are over."
I don't know where the NH got it but I think I have seen you talk about it on here.
"I have brought my views up to the CEO of Lake Hospital System."
You act like you understand but then why do you complain to council?
"Their are people today that want to do things with the Hotel."
Please explain further. This statement gets nobody anywhere.
"Study urban redevelopment?"
Yes study it so you can do something productive rather than just complain.

You think that is ok that people have to move after 10 years or more so Lake Erie College kids can move in ??????

They had to move out of Hershey House Apts too some there 18 - 20 years...

Sorry,I don't think I ever mentioned saving the High School {costs are to prohibited]

Council will only be awarded so much grant money, CM asked for 19 million what do you think Painesville will get?

I agree with the above poster to much planning and studying where are the results. because at the end of the day thats what counts.

Term, surely you must understand that for this city to move forward and actually show positive growth we need money.

Since the wisdom of our county leaders and landlords has been for years to make sure Painesville is home to the bulk of low income in Lake County we don't generate enough tax dollars to do anything on a large scale.

For lack of our own money we need to go to other government grants - state, federal, etc. The only way they give out that money is if you can show need and a good plan to use it. THAT is why the planning is important. If we spend $75,000 on a plan and using that plan over the next 10-15 years brings in millions in development grants then it was well spent.

Since the wisdom of our county leaders and landlords has been for years to make sure Painesville is the home to the bulk of low income in Lake County.... Is that really the county and the landlords fault or the people who run this city for letting it happen? First off Painesville will never be the Painesville of the 40's 50's even the 60's those days are long gone, Now read the master plan for housimg, in the downtown master plan, and tell me what the statement means to you? Several years ago a councilman assured me Brentwood would never have section 8 housing, was he lying or didn't he know better? More questions than answers.

Yes we seem to blame everyone but ourselves. The plan leaves the door open for any housing they want, rental, low income, high income, a general mix, more of the same. Bridges to knowwhere, building on swamps in flood plains, YES this is all the countys fault! Maybe some city employees will move in there.

This statement from the Downtown Master Plan

Integrate diverse housing options in the downtown to help meet varying lifestyles.
In order to retain existing residents and to attract new ones, the city must provide a variety of lifestyle choices with housing types, rental and for-sale options, and price points to accommodate a wide range of age groups, income levels and cultural backgrounds.
I may be wrong but that seems to cover anything from a tent to a mansion.

At March 20, 2009 at 5:35 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Time to come clean Term, its not that you don't like the master plan, its you just don't have any faith in the people with the job of implementation of it. Starting with the CM right on down. The CM only tells the council what she wants to tell them, not letting them know all the facts. In the boom times of the last 15 years we should had more development in downtown Painesville than we have had. Even Diamond Business Park how much money has the city sunk into that and what does Painesville have to show for it? Sad but until Painesville changes leadership this town will be stuck in a vaccum, selling electricity instead of the city. You know it I know it and alot of other people know it.

At March 20, 2009 at 6:22 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think people said the same about Cobblestone Court and the Diamond Center project, i.e. it was going to be a bunch of ghetto apartments..doesn't look too ghetto over there now does it?? Something drastic needs to be done for the downtown area..but of course we have our normal chorus of detractors and negativists bashing the ideas.

If anyone killed the downtown area it was the Les Nero administration. I see all of the projects that have been in the short time Rita has been our C.M...had she been in charge years ago..we would surpassed Mentor as one of the top communities in Northeast Ohio.. Talk about inheriting a screwed up system..

At March 20, 2009 at 7:56 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your happy about Diamond Center? Ask the CM for total costs so far for the City of Painesville and how much revenue Painesville has received out of that area. The city has taken a bath financially and legally on that property.

Anonymous CM fan club member, you are living in lala land. Get real. Rita is our problem, and all those that aid and abet her.

At March 21, 2009 at 6:43 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No..I was here during the Les Nero years..when the downtown area was turned into county office buildings and the cement monolith that was later to become the "Parking Garage" was built. I was here when Argonne Arms was built...”free govt subsidies if we let you build this apartment complex in your city..well come on in!!!” Sanders Ave..Homeworth and Shelby Ave…”sure you can build those to..more govt’ money..”. These areas came to represent the worst drug and crime infested areas in the tri-county area.. The problems within this city were here well before the C.M. here.. So if you want to point fingers..point them in the direction of the past administration and the screwed up system she inherited…...
As Diamond Centre, maybe if we didn’t border a greedy land grabbing city such as Mentor..who wanted the land for their own tax base of businesses, then we wouldn’t have had to spend the money to secure it. But Cobblestone is growing and people are moving in..
While the C.M. is not perfect, as neither are any of us here. In the last five years, I look at the growth and improved image of this city..the diminishing crime rates, the expansion of the college, new schools..etc..etc..good things are happening in this city. And if you haven’t seen it..then maybe it’s you that has been in la la land…

At March 21, 2009 at 5:40 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

There was an individual that offered to purchase the Hotel on Main Street Hill from the city.
This person was turned down by this wonderful city because the CM stated that it would not fit into the plan as an Office Building: But, we want to run Arby's out-of-town to build an office building?
Real sense here.We want to run BP out-of-town for a Laketran collection point? Big Bus vehicles in a Lot that has a problem to house employee vehicles and mulch pallets. A Bus Hub that will destroy and back-up traffic at an intersection that is a main-line to the city/points east and west. Not too smart CM. CM, you screwed-up this city before and you are doing it again and again and again!!!!!!!! Do this city a favor and another favor: you raced out of town 10 years ago (whoa suit) and you went west and then totally messed-up in another area. By no official vote and secret phone conversations, they dragged you back here to steal land from everyone.Steal land that the greater percentage of it is absolutely bare and disgusting. How many more times do you think you can fool council and the people into believing that the 400 acres mean anything?? Your Jedd proposal is a sham; and we cannot wait until the youth of Concord Township receives the Nails and finally realizes your methods of being selfish and leaving all of them behind because it is all about you and your driven: "My Way or the HIGHWAY." Good luck Concord Folks as you will someday realize that this proposal was all about CM Rita's high-end drive for MONEY and it will eventually erode all of you to oblivion! She has done this before and she is doing it again. CM Rita just loves to be the dictator over young professionals as she knows they do not have the knowledge in the world of absolute negative/crooked political policies or drive. She states one item out her left cheek and states just the opposite out of her right cheek. This has been proven with her dealings with Lake Metroparks, City of Mentor, Painesville Twp, Grand River, Fairport, and now you Concord.
Good Luck!!

Stop with the Hotel thing, that building can't be used for anything it has so many things wrong with it, you would not beleve,
when Ollie Ewise from Jorden, opened the Painesville Plaza Hotel for a short time, before he was arested for fraud, he had a contractor remove walls from the 2nd floor up, right above each other, not a good ideal to do when all of the walls between every room are bearing walls, oh they put 3/4 plywood frames around the openings to hide the loose block.

that is just one thing...

It's a good thing our city manager bought this building for one dollar, taking it off the tax roll and making the people of Painesville responsible for what we do with it now. Think she would know better if that statement you made was fact.

At March 22, 2009 at 6:42 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

CM Rita only proposes plans and new plans in order to gain back what she could not stop/prevent from destroying city revenue and her continued self-plans of growth without one absolute clue that any growth (houses at this time) will be a success. If any of you do not understand, then go to meetings - watch the channel wonderful 12. read the papers, go on-line. When you finally (in your own world) put all of this together you will then realize the selfish presentations that are sent to our Council and they have absolutely no clue as to what is happening. Gee, I wonder why???? Go find this out and then you will understand.
CM R has sweet talked many many communities - they have turned her down each time. She has now found a community (Concord TWP) that she has convinced this JEDD (as a township cannot have a JEDD on their own)would be the next best thing as creamery milk/sliced bread. Mentor City will not work with her, and now Growing Concord thinks she is their savior? I think not. Rita CM has her own agenda, and if she can capture and smooze others to go along - she has you and will have you forever. CM has done this so many times to gain anything to show (which is false) her credits.
CM R will hold everything and anything over your heads as she now has your attention and her control. Concord Trustees, be viligent and watch your backs. You are still young in the world of development and she knows this.

Good luck to Concord - You would be so much better-off to discuss this type of JEDD with Mentor as those officials do not play the games of Painesville CM. Mentor does care about their people, as you care about yours. Painesville CM (who council believes they work for her) does not and never will care about the folks in Painesville.
So easy for a CM to go to a community that does not have the right to create a JEDD - but with CM push for her to regain some of the loss - it is so easy to convince all of you how great this will be. Just watch and see, after she gains her plans ($$$) what she will do to you and yours as she as done so many times in the past and now today.
Concord you are being used and you do not even realize it.
Words are words, as they have always been in the city of Painesville: unfortunatley those words have never ever been backed-up nor Justified in writing. Heck, the residents of this city, who pay and pay cannot ever obtain written documenation nor any promise of relief as you Concord have received in the blank words as spoken. Pay attention, as you can end-up like Painesville
Township and have everything ripped out from within and under your Township shoes!!
Oh my,a City wants to help us and establish something we cannot do. We will gain a trite amount of money that we could never have before. You may gain, but we hope you can sustain the pain that is coming your way.
If we were Concord Twp Trustees, we would say absolutely no - quit rushing the issue because of the new Hositals. As Townships can, we want to place this before our citizens and gain their input as we always do. Do this and TELL the TRUTH, not the words of a City CM who never Justifies nor
Documents anything to the citizens who must deal with her crap - by votes of a council who absolutely have no clue.
Do not make any more mistakes. Concord, you do have the time and latitude to back-out of this.

Re-think your position, research what has happened before - 10 years ago of failure - research the background (Resume which is not there) of this CM.
This CM"s venue is for her and her alone. She uses everyone and every avenue for her gain and she does not have any cognitive mind-set nor concience as to who she may destroy in her quest for ultimate power. She destroyed Painesville before and she is doing this again. What makes Concord think that they are safe from her destruction - words of more Income - we think not!

For the love of God, people. . . I've lived in Painesville for years now and it's much better now than it used to be. Some of you seem to be carrying very personal grudges against city officials - 'painesville residents', you don't even make sense - it's like you think Rita is, all on her own, some sort of evil juggernaut making decisions and taking actions for her own personal gain. What do you have against her? What has she done to you? What evidence do you have that she is so evil and what makes you think that you can read her mind to know her intentions?

You want to see a he**hole, go work in Cleveland like I do. You'll come home to Painesville and feel like it's paradise compared to that. It's not perfect but perfect doesn't exist. If you think it's so terrible and the leadership is so awful, evil and corrupt then why don't you move and take your constant negativity with you?

Or, since you claim to have so much inside information and are clearly so highly educated, why don't you run for council and start cleaning this supposed mess up? Clearly you think you can do better - prove it!

I would love to move can't sell the house because 4 doors down I have 8 cars parked in the driveway evey night and every Wednesday at least 4 garbage totes, you ever see that in Cleveland? I have reported it, guess its not important? No one seems impressed with the new school buildings only the fact they are in crisis.

To some of the more strident critics on here, I want to just point out that there is a big difference between saying:

"Rita is making bad decisions. Rita has made errors of judgment that have hurt the City. Rita is not the best person for the job."

and

"Rita is destroying the City because she's greedy and bad and wants to steal land and money for her own personal gain and never has and never will care about the City!!!"

Does anybody really think that Rita goes to work every day, rubs her hands together and chortles to herself "Hmmmm, how can I screw Painesville over today??"

No time to get mad, life is to short. The short version of "The answer" as it will be known to future generations (the one that disappeared) is that there is actually a $24,000 bill owed. When I checked previously I used the names of the owners and so forth, not the address. KAREN said that there was a $15k bill, but I found there to be a much bigger one than that. However there is a dispute over the true owner of what shop and store and so on, but it is being looked at. The only problem that I was led to believe that could be an issue is how long it has been. It may not be collectible, it is not in my hands but the capable hands of the utilities division collections dept. I am always about the truth no matter who is right and wrong. JT
