" DON'T FORGET TO REMEMBER" bee gees

Oh my heart won't be believe that you have left me

December 7,1941

The day America's Greatest Generation had to grow up. American's should never forget this day a day that will remain in infamy.

Most young American's at that time had no idea where or what Pearl Harbor was. They were just getting to adulthood and December 7,1941 changed everything.

My father when talking about that day admitted he had no idea where or what Pearl Harbor was. He knew his country was calling on his generation to save the United States.

It was a different time. My father when enlisting was so surprised that Uncle Sam was giving him a brand new pair of boots. He had never received a new pair of boots in his life. It was really a different time. My father got to see Europe and he witnessed many things he wished he hadn't. But not once did he ever regret the journey he was on.

Now to Painesville;

Received my Painesville Pride the other day.
Councilman DeLeone wished us all a Happy Thanksgiving? That was over a week ago.

I will quote him here, "Our city is on the rise. We are making progress that 6 years ago I was told by many could not be made. We have been blessed. And I am thankful to all those that helped make this possible."
Really? Then why was the city manager fired! I mean challenged to find new employment? And at the same time given a hefty severance pay? So much for progress.

What Residents Can Do To Assist In The Cleaning & Maintenance of Sewer Outlets
Again as I write this across the street I see three storm sewer outlets. You know what they all have in common? All were installed in the 1940's and all three have no grating. So for me to clean those it just makes it easier for ANYTHING to go down. Leaves, balls, bottles cans even small wild animals that chose this for their homes and when it rains they drown and along with everything else plugs up the whole works. Look around your neighborhood how many storm sewers don't have adequate grating? Sorry that's the city's responsibility. You grate them I'll rake them!
Painesville Requires Vacant Property/Building Registration
Self explanatory
Building Permits-Why Should I Obtain One?
If you don't by some off-hand chance we catch you, you will be fined.

All things they want YOU to do!

On the second page were openings listed in the Zoning Commission and Planning Commission.

At the recent council meeting the question of a Utility Commission arose.
Seems some of the residents who applied were First Energy employee's that live in the city? Eliminating them left one person. I will never understand the reasoning of this and for that matter a Utility Commission. If that commission only acts in an 'advisory' capacity and has no real authority why bother? Somebody can still [proudly cook that turkey against your advise.

At the last council meeting the council was informed that the city budget for the electric department was around 25 million dollars and we purchase 14 million dollars of electricity. You do the math on the other 11 million.

A new business opened at 216 E. Main St. recently "Our Treasures" a collection of interesting items.
Hours are Tuesday-Friday 10:00am to 4:00pm Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm Closed Sunday and Monday. It seems these hours would limit the clientele you would want to shop in your establishment?

My favorite time of the year! It's perfume commercial time. Ad's that make little sense and are set to 60's soundtracks.

Todays paper regarding retail in Lake County. Painesville is so unmotivated that we, the residents have to settle with unique-boutique specialty shops and not shops to generate a sizable revenue NOT to mention what the residents want. Is this what we want? Not sure how you feel but I myself want both. I want a sizable, well stocked reasonable priced grocer. Yes, I know the big bird is close but that is the township. I do not want to buy my groceries and clothes at a dollar store. I really hope the new CM can shake up the staff to bring in real retail shopping.

Other then raise taxes for the employees, what does the Joint Economic Development District do? Anyone know?

4:21 With Lake East closing leaving a big gap in Painesville's income tax base. Then with Tri-Point being built in Concord Twp. and Township's being unable to collect income tax leaving a big hole in Concord for the need for services and infrastructure the state allows for a township and a city to collaborate in a Joint Economic Development. Now inside the JEDD a 1.75% income tax is collected and I believe Painesville receives .25% in tax revenue. Painesville also agrees to provide utilities into the JEDD. If your paying attention Concord is pretty much building a "city" in that area and the tax money goes for infrastructure improvements. Also Painesville-Concord both invested in the Tower Fire Truck.

1:15 You get what you got and I see no change in the foreseeable future. No matter who the city manager is. If your going to have a vibrant downtown stores have to be open past 4:00 pm? That said if they have no customers why be open? Retail is constantly changing. More and more of us shop online and brick and mortar stores don't do the business they used to.

Get real! The only thing that would bring "quality" retail to Painesville is residents with money to spend. Since by far, the majority of "residents" in Painesville work under the table and for less than minimum wage, it just ain't gonna happen. Painesville had It's chance in the 60's but instead told the deleted of the Great Lakes Mall to go away. "We don't want the riff raff that a mall would bring. We're the county seat!"

9:29 Painesville has the lowest per capita income in the county among it's residents, that said we got what we got. I don't believe the city ever told GLM to get lost. That dairy farm that sat between Rt. 20 and Rt. 84 was to appealing. Mentor had incorporated itself and was to be the next big thing. Painesville panicked and decided to go with urban renewal. I read about these tours around town what that decision destroyed is unbelievable. We always seem to be on the wrong side of the future?

Genealogy section of morley library has the council minutes from the meeting where they turned down annexing a property so that the mall could have Painesville sewer. And the reason they gave was what I stated above. Sorry if you don't believe it, but Painesville has had a looonngg history of bad decisions.

Yes we were on the wrong side of the future years ago as I too have heard the story about the Mall wanting to build here but was rejected. Check your facts again.

10:36/7:41 I don't doubt you just what dates on the city council meetings can I find this information? And where was the proposed site on land Painesville was to annex? Learn something everyday.
This could be a very interesting story.

What difference does it make? That happened 30-40 years ago. Why go back to stir a stagnate pot. Build a bridge and get over it - move on man.

If you don't understand history you are doomed to making the same mistakes again.
Learn from the mistakes of others.
Besides, knowing how things came to be is always interesting.
Maybe not to you but some of us are interested.

1:44 More like 55 years ago. No one to blame. Only my curiosity was where the area this Mall was planned for? And as we have learned the city will not provide utilities unless they annex the land.
4:46 Makes a good point we should heed. Plus look at the B.S. Steele Mansion had to go through? Sometimes I believe we are our worst enemy. When we look ahead.

If I get a chance to go to the library, I'll look it up. I didn't write it down, so I would only be guessing, but sometime in '63 seems to sick in my head.

the car commercials are out numbering the perfume ones. I have yet to see one sitting in someone's driveway with a big bow on it

1:02 Yes they do. but at least you know why its in the driveway with a red ribbon? Now on the other hand perfume ads go right over my head. buffalos, and birds and whatever. The only constant is after you give her the perfume she
A) jumps out of a window or climbs a rope?
B) she takes off her clothes?
