"SPINNING WHEEL" blood ,sweat &tears

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL VETERANS TODAY AND EVERY DAY
THERE IS TRUELY NO WAY TO THANK YOU ENOUGH

What goes up must come down
Spinnin' wheel got to go round

Last night's planning Commission Meeting;

First off  the utility pole issues... was tabled again what is this three, four months?

Then the county came showing drawings of of the new 5-story Lake County Administration building to be built on the site of the Dorthy Allen building (former senior center)

A very informative presentation and I had to agree with commission member Mary Hada way to much aluminium. I have noticed as well as she must have that aluminium doesn't age that well and soon takes on a cheap look. To here credit she expected them to come up with more of a Morley Library style architecture. I get it presently we pretty much have a mis-match of styles  in this town. Morley as well as our schools show a unified style. Aluminium and dark brick wasn't what I expected for this building on the square. Going down Main St. we have the Health and Human Services build followed by the administration building and then the Nolan building all different styles. We find this throughout our city. Find something and stick to it.

The County was looking for permits to tear down the old senior center. Assistant city law director brought up the fact that due to the election this week the county commissioner's will have two new members out of three. Are they on board with this project? The officials weren't sure? Then please tell us why your here?

So why are we tearing down this building? This building could be constructed there. The county may ask for a different style, they maybe even sell the property along with to tear it down and seed it with grass? Great more grass to cut downtown! Maybe will be known as the Great Plains of Painesville?

This city needs to know what the incoming plans of the new commissioner's are before anything is done. That said the wrecking ball was approved with a stipulation the the city will find out from the commissioner's what their plans are. I don't understand the hurry? The commissioners will be seated first week of January 2017. Seemed like a lot of pressure last night to approve  to-demolish that building.

I think the important thing to remember is that once it is torn down, it can not be rebuilt.
There is a silver lining to this and that is that the City has the right/duty to review any structures to be built here. They have the ability to approve or deny any building plans in this area.
Like you, I don 't understand d the rush to demolish when no one seems to know what the two new Commissioners may choose to do.

1:07 Along with the city being left with just a grassy knoll.
I expect the county to build on that site the question is what?

I still think it's disgraceful to tear down the existing building, but I'm not opposed to new architecture as long as it looks decent. There's good design and bad. Has the proposal been posted or published anywhere yet? I'd love to see it. Back to my first point though: It's not as though there aren't plenty empty spaces elsewhere downtown where this thing could be built!

11:02 Disgraceful? Well remember when the Dorothy Allen building caught on fire? Well it seems the building was underinsured. The upstairs was never renovated as well as problems in the basement of the building. I guess you could view drawing of the building at the county commissioner's office. It sits further back than the present building has a rounded glass façade dark brick and aluminum it also connects to the Nolan Building. Our concern is that we don't acquire another empty spot in town.
Also someone should look into this Land Bank again half the money to demolish the building comes from them? And their always in a hurry!

New Market Mall seems to be a great place to put county offices....... and it's already there! Even an overhead pedestrian tunnel between the exsisting building and new market mall would be more cost effective than a new building.

4:42 Sounds good but when was the last time government was ever cost effective? Plus now the parking garage is gone, where to park?
My only concern is that the city gives them a permit to demolish that building and then either pulls out or builds something else. Who could have thought a bunch of nice old people could cause this dilemma?

The problem with the idea of using Victoria Place is that every single politician wants to leave "their" mark. For the three that were in power, that legacy would have been an administration building that would last for 100 years but was never really needed.
Officially they say that Victoria Place was considered but I would seriously doubt that was ever the case. After all, where is the legacy in moving into an existing build that doesn't have your name on a plaque at the front door?

A parking garage is much more cost effective than leveling one building and erecting a completely new building. The old parking garage is already down.

8:43 And our city fathers and mothers have already allocated $400,000 for the parking lot that replaced the parking garage as well as the parking lot on Washington St,
