"THURSDAY" jim croce

The most famous Thursday of the year is coming up. The trifecta of Holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas  as well as New Years. Now all three have something to do with the others. Thanksgiving to me is the "family" holiday. When your Tea Party brother-in-law from Pennsylvania and your Liberal Left sister-in-law from Jersey can all get together for a meal....... All to be agitated by me. I have suggested to family members someone should have a relationship with an atheist, or at least an agnostic so as to throw religion into the mix? No the best we can come up with is let's invite Ang's former two wives to the celebration? The trick is to keep your back to a wall and have your most trusted child get you your plate. Now we have wonderful dinners. Only once did I question a 'smoked' turkey look bad but tasted great. Now as the festivities continue the NFL comes into play. First the Detroit Lions playing whoever. The question isn't who will win the game but how much will the commissioner fine Ndamukong Suh for intentionally stepping on a players head or kicking someone in the groin area? Then a latter game featuring the Dallas Cowboys who recently play like the Allas Cowgirls. Jerry seems to not believe he made a mistake by getting rid of his defensive coach Rob Ryan last year?

Now after the games people aroun 10:00 pm start suggesting we get ready to be at some store at 3:00 am to purchase a 55' Sony TV for $250.00 the store has at least three at each location yet there are 800 people waiting in the parking lot? Nope I'll pass my Christmas shopping is already done.

This year is the end of end of Thanksgiving as we know it! The big box stores will all open at 6:00 pm Thursday evening. No more Black Friday it's now "Lets Screw up Thursday".
If the stores all open at Six will we start standing in line at noon? What Thanksgiving dinner will become a traditional Thanksgiving Breakfast? Everyone done eating by 10:00 am? No conversation, no football? Who decides all this for us? Some Greedy Ba#*^rd at some Corporate headquarters? Bet he isn't out shopping or working. Not only are they screwing up your Thanksgiving.  Let's screw-up our employee's also.

My Christmas gifts include Franklin's, Grants, and a few Jackson's. I've got so good at this I don't even include a card anymore. Look the exception are the children under the age of ten, they still believe, and get a gift.
Gift Cards? Have you ever given anyone cash and they than purchase a gift card to a certain store? Yes? You must know my brother and his high finance's at Giant Eagle..

Yesterday I received an email from Jen Reed of the Downtown Painesville Organization. To be honest I like Jen alot and is truly committed to her job. But in the email she stated " It is important to note this event has moved to a Friday evening to accommodate the growing number shoppers in Downtown Painesville. REALLY! I believe I need a pair of boots for this event it's getting pretty deep!

*********************************************************************************
Very informative meeting on our storm water problem here in Painesville.
What I seemed to have got out of that first meeting. "If you don't create the problem in the first place, you don't have to find a solution later."

Last year over 2,000 people attended the Downtown Holiday walk. yes.....lots of people. They expect to top those numbers this year. Now we just need to make it like that every day.

I remember all the great stores downtown..Carlisle's, Gail Grant...I even look back in fondness to that ancient Sears store that looked like a leftover from the Depression! sigh...Hopefully downtown can be transformed back to life again

According to the Downtown Painesville group there are supposed to be "pop-up" stores located within the long-vacant store fronts. The stores are going to feature local art for sale. That sounds great! Hope these "pop-up" stores can stay throughout the holiday season, and not for just one night. Anyway, it's a great idea.

10:16/3:56 I wished I shared your hopes. As it stands it seems to only be a one night event?

It was a great time at the downtown event Friday night. Nice to see lots of people in the downtown area. Good job by Jen Reed and her volunteers as well as Kathy Bieterman and her crew. A really nice event that showcases the things we do still have. I heard many comments from people from Concord and Mentor that do not normally come into Painesville about how cute and quaint places like Jimmies, Flavors, Model Bakery, Your Vine or Mine and Grand Designs. Hopefully some of those people will come back to patronize these businesses that are invested in Painesville.

7:11 glad you had a great time! Now tell us what Christmas purchases you made, from where and how much you paid for the items? That is the tale of the story. Were people buying stuff. and for goodness sake what? Anybody?

Do you ever read your comments back to yourself and question the level of negativity you write with? Why does anyone who had a good time owe you any explanation of their purchases?
You and your motives, comments, and general dissatisfaction of the city is part of the problem, not a solution. It's sad that you can't even find it in yourself to support a positive event in the city. What a great event and a wonderful way for people to have a night out in downtown. You constantly complain about there being nothing to bring people downtown, and when something brings people out, you still complain.
The best part of your posts is that the more you comment, the more your true colors show. If Fairport needs a Scrooge for their Christmas event, I know where they can find one.

12:11 pardon me, here I was under the impression that the whole purpose of all this was to expand economic development in Painesvilles business district? I had no idea this events purpose was to fill your Friday night with something to do. My question was where, what and how much. I feel those are honest questions to the call of shop downtown Painesville. Until the day comes when most people can make everyday porchases that comment should be put on the shelf. My question to you us who are you attempting to fool? Thinking your way and pretending that things are great! You go ahead buy into the smoke and mirror's. Economic Development a ride around the Park on a horse and carriage. Oh, and have a Merry Christmas. My true colors can't be changed by some B.S.

There was an editorial in the paper a few days ago. I tried to find it on the NH site to respond to this person, maybe someone here can help or have a logical answer. Mr. Augie Landsmann wrote a very negative piece on saying no to the street scape in Painesville. Now, I might understand his comment if he was a resident of this city but he lives in Painesville Township.
Why bother picking on anothers town? I think Mr. Landsmann should mind his own business, attend his township meetings and spew negativity at his own town and people. There is enough negativity from the people on this blog site.

Now how many of those people at Friday nights Downtown Painesville event were township residents?
How many make Taste of Painesville along with Party in the Park?
How many serve on all the different organizations that help make these projects successful?
Remember their moneys green too.
This was one persons view point.
We all should be able to take some critics opinion.

Years ago I had a small business in a space in the Senior Center that is now occupied by the Republican Party. This night, Spirit of the Season I think it was called, was a joy. Lots of people walked through my shop, mostly not buying but just stopping in to talk. One season a customer asked if she could play her guitar and sing in my store on that night and of course I said yes. Like I said, I didn't sell hardly anything that night but I did love every minute of it. Really, I wish I could turn back the hands of time and do it again! As for this year's event, everything has a starting point. Who is to say this won't be the start of something great? Isn't it always good when people come together? It's often about the money in P-Ville. Can we have one night when it is not?

Kathy, OK now explain why the city is spending 1.4 million dollars on two blocks of Main St.In this case to me it is about the waste of money. What exactly do people want expect out of our Downtown?

4:45, do you attend all of the council, trustee, etc. meetings? Since you constantly point out there is NO shopping here you must be shopping somewhere. That said by your own opinion you should be attending everyone's meetings. Oh, and hopefully we will see your name attached to more letters in the paper bashing other peoples cities too. Why stop here in PVille you should be attacking everyone and everything in the entire county. Your excuse for Landsmann is weak.

I try to make all the meetings yes, like tonight the city council and school board are on the same date and time?
I have to shop elsewhere the purchase limits are well not that many in town. My opinion only concerns Painesville. Now if you like the idea of people telling you to shop downtown OK. It's a lie. and most people laugh when they hear Shop Downtown Painesville. Bashing letter's about Painesville? Tell me all the roads that will be paved? Tell me the future? Look I call them the way I see them. You don't like it well I'm sorry.

Hey Term, to answer your question - I don't know what people expect - but I'm thinking maybe most would like to see businesses come to town to pay those high business taxes. $1.4 million in grant/city money to give a portion of Main Street a facelift? Maybe the powers that be think this is what is keeping retail from all those empty spaces. I disagree. The high rent from the property owners is what keeps retail away. Until a shop is established, they need a huge break on rent, just to stay afloat while they build their business. Too bad there seems to be no grant money available to subsidise rents for start-up retails. Or is it subsidize? No I like it with an 's' so I'll go with that. Businesses, non-retail, need the same break. Used to be maybe our utilities, but that may be gone with the wind. It's always about the money. Pass it out and they will come. Problem is, P-Ville can't seem to find any to pass out. A solution in my mind is to layoff at least half the administrative staff, free-up a couple hundred thousand, and pass it out as subsidies to bring in retail and business.Kind of like those tax abatements communities passed out some time ago. But I don't like tax abatements so much. I'd favor a system, much like P-Ville has already showed a passion for - grants. City-backed grants, maybe even business loans, payable to the City years down the road, or if the business decides to move to another town.

Kathy, all a business has to look at the demographics of Painesville, everything from age to average family income and think I can't see making money here.

But let's go ahead and spend this money, raise taxes, pretend stores..... Just so we can have those precious memory moments we seem to believe is the end to end all. Hey you got the memories you can do make all your purchases 5 10 miles east or west!

At November 19, 2013 at 1:44 PM , Blogger Sandy Miller said...

Well I disagree Term....... does Tremont or Ohio City ring a bell. Horrible demographics, a bunch of artists moved in, set up galleries and slowly the turn over happened. The rents were low and there even a couple squatters. When we opened the gallery and I tried to get artists to move into town each and everyone said they could not afford the rent.
I have written about this before and Kathy Saks is right on the money with . It's not the demographics, it's the high rent.

At November 19, 2013 at 1:55 PM , Anonymous Kathy Sak said...

Hey Term, I didn't say "raise taxes" anywhere in my post. I only offered a suggestion, cut expenses by cutting non-essential city employees and use the savings as grant money for start-up businesses to fill vacant store fronts. I don't like to complain without offering a solution. Demographics? And those are? Look, those stores you speak of,where you shop, located within 5 - 10 miles of P-Ville, used P-Ville demographics when they chose their current locations. If you are talking about driving that distance to shop, be fair and add their demographics to our mix. Different picture now isn't it? "Precious memory moments we seem to believe is the end to all end. ..." I'm not sure why you answered my post with this dribble. What do you want for P-Ville if it's not business and retail? What are you looking for? I offered up retail and businesses as an avenue to offset the cost burden of running a city soley from the shoulders of taxpaying citizens living here.

At November 19, 2013 at 2:13 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I wasn't directing the comment at you Kathy. The comment was how Painesville's only solution to anything is to raise taxes, Painesville only takes in not gives out.
The memories was a statement made by a councilmember that all this Downtown Painesville time spent on Main St. will be worth the memories to her? What does it matter if anyone can make a lving?
I agree the rents are in the Beachwood range in Painesville and have no idea why? Please I was not refering to your post only how the city operates.
Sandy I know of a condo complex in Tremont where the average family income is over $300,000. Yes Tremont and Ohio City should be an inspiration to what Painesville could be. Tell me when it all started did it start with a steetscape? No. Painesville always seems to want to put the cart in front of the horse.
The old hotel tear it down, build a new Senior Center. Yet another non-taxable property in town.
Can't wait to see what the plans are for the hospital site?

At November 19, 2013 at 3:43 PM , Anonymous Kathy Sak said...

You really know how to get me started Term! Now it's the seniors! Has council already voted on the future of the 'old hotel?' My opinion (get ready to beat me up some more) the Senior Center is private non profit 501 C. Now, if that non profit group wants to dissolve, fine. Then, there is no more senior center. If the city wants to move forward with a center, it must be a community center, for all, not a senior center. And using the old hotel site for any government function, or non profit function, would be just plain sad and a real money loser. Here's my idea. The senior board already owns the building they are in and it's a great old building. Doesn't pay property taxes and hasn't for a long time, so if that senior board was to sign it over to the city, no lost revenues. Now, as city owned, the city can get rid of that "senior beauty shop" taking up prime footage in the front, and bring back Brian and Flavors on the Square!! And the space currently billed as "for seniors" would become a community center, for everyone. All upstairs spots should be rented out rat-cheap, - not a vacancy anywhere. The old hotel must be sold for profit business only. If the city can't afford the utilities/upkeep on the old place, begin plans to lease out space in it - as in a mini-mall. Get a grant for that? Revitalization it's called. But it can not, should not, be used for anything that doesn't pay taxes. No school uses - no non profits, no government. Does it need torn down? i don't know the answer, but if the building can't be salvaged then take it down and sell the empty lot, with a title condition that it be used only for profit for the next 100 years.

I am well aware you make the rounds for PC council and the PC BOE, I asked about you attending all of the government meetings in all of Lake County. You figure if you shop here you should have an opinion as to what should be done here? NO, play in your own backyard we got enough opinions without outsiders (and you know what opinions are for) Then you bash the shopping night out and then defend it as it brings in others money. Once again talking out of both sides of your mouth when the shoe fits you and only you. Also we are not all Homers, (insulting)how old are you anyway? I know you're to darn old to be talking like that.

Kathy, all this is rumor presently. The Church on the square wants to buy the building presently housing the senior center. They will terardown everthing but the first 25 feet of the building and the rest used for parking for the church.
Now the city appears to have a grant of $800,000 to tear down the old hotel(not enough).
The former city manager had let area SWAT teams use the building for practice and ask a policeman what has transpired in that building. It's beyond being saved. Now if we teardown the hotel ...maybe we will ask for a levy tobuild a new senior center, just presently all rumors, but the hotel is KAPUT!
5:27 I bash it because it's a crock to tell people they can shop here,I would LIKE to shop here. Do your Main St. project than be proud to show the people of Painesville what you spent 1.4 million dollars on. I'm not to old for anything but enjoy your ride in a carriage around the square. Just make sure you clean-up after yourself. You seem to like spreading it around. I have no clue what you expect the end result of all this will be. Merry Christmas anyway.

The church wants it for a parking lot - what a terrible waste this would be. Horrible. Should not happen. That's prime 'on-the-square property. The city has a nice parking garage already. The faithful can park there and walk over to the church. Please let's not tear down yet another P-Ville landmark.

The seniors took the pay out rather than repairing the building when the fire occurred. That building is in severe disrepair to the tune of millions of dollars. So would you recommend the city take ownership and then levy the residents to repair it?

At November 21, 2013 at 12:02 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice parking garage?

Are you kidding me, go in there when its raining, it rains harder inside then outside. Plus the rain is leaching the chemicals out of the concrete so it then permanently stains the paint on your car.

So who owns the building? And didn't the city take over the Seniors? I remember a council meeting where the new person is paid out of Parks and Rec.
But honestly who now owns the building?
J.G. Hahl was in that building for months after the fire. How bad can it be?

At November 22, 2013 at 10:21 AM , Anonymous Kathy Sak said...

Took the payout? How did the insurance company work that deal? Seriously, never heard of that happening. I've been in the building since the fire and it looks great. Certainly wonder anyway, if what you say is true, how the city would allow occupation and tenants. Nope, don't believe what you say at all. The fire originated in the front, where the beuty shop is now located.
