"OUR HOUSE" crosby stills nash & young

I believe Jen Reed mentioned this at the last council meeting but due to our fantastic sound system I missed it.
Yet in Fridays Lake County Tribune 02/15/13 their was an article on page 3 of Historic Gage House has new owners.

If you remember that house was moved from it's location at Erie ans State St. to make room for the new Rite-Aid Drugstore. Many residents presented ideas to save that building. With co-operation from the city as well as Corporate Rite-Aid decided that they would spend the same amount of money to move it as demolish the building. The building was moved on April 26, 2007 and I as well as many others believed this would be a fine addition to our downtown. Then the economy collapsed and since the move the building has sat empty. Now Tracy Bellamy, owner of Isis Properties,LLC and Goddess Construction,LLC along with her partner and fiance' Rick Montgomery, have purchased the building and have plans for the historic home.

Whatever they decide to do I hope the Painesville area people support this endeavor. If it becomes a quality coffee shop, frozen yogurt or other similar type of business.

In my eyes a private project like this will do more for downtown Painesville than spending $892,000 on two blocks of Main St.

Speaking of Main St. Big changes coming to that has been known as the Hillside or Dahling building also.

Galion electric rates are so high now, the nursing home was in danger of being disconnected.

The place has a 100% occupancy rate.

Maybe they would not have invested in the Gage house without the Main st improvement. You should ask them directly, if their answer is yes then the city just got a 20% return on the main st investment.
The improvement to the Gage house will be at least 200,000.
You have consistently underestimated what this improvement means to the current property owners and investors.
Copy Quest has also been sold Maybe the city is onto something.

How do you figure? at the 01/22/13 Council Meeting Ms. Jen Reed claimed a 40 to 1 return on investment? $200,000 is a nice start but very far from promised rewards.
Now I'm glad they are re-investing in Painesville. But forgive me the city is not onto something.
Have you ever been to Ohio City, Tremont, even Little Italy? Thats how you do things not spending close to a million dollars on two blacks. Can't wait for the residents to see what their money got them.

The city is investing less than $200,000 in the Main Street improvements, the rest of the money is coming via grants.

At February 19, 2013 at 8:05 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

6:14 via of Grants. free money that falls out of the sky?
We could of applied for Grant money to improve our infrastructure. Roads, sewers, parks. The county grant could have been used for many projects to increase our return on investment. In years past county grants were used to pay Painesville's share for Milstone. Right or wrong. Grant money you only get so much.
Now if I use your thinking on Ms.Reeds 40 to 1 investment I will see 8 million dollars in return?
You then only have to show me another $7,800,000.00 still not buying in. Sorry.

You still did not answer the question regarding why they are buying and investing in the gage house. If one of the reasons they are investing is because of the Main st improvement then your arguement just got weaker.
Why you are asking questions why not ask Mayor Anderson of Willoughby what they did first to get their downtown moving. why not just admit that the Main st improvement will end up doing the downtown good and be done with it.

Grant money is available for specific designated purposes based upon the agency or entity issuing the grant. It cannot just be used for any purpose. The Downtown Painesville Organization was able to identify the funds being available for that type of project and work with the city administrators in procuring those funds. The Grant money cannot just be used for any purpose just the purpose identified when applying for the grant.
As far as "my thinking" I just commented about the fact that the city is only coming up with less than $200,000 of the amount. My point is anytime you can parlay $200,000 into $800,000 plus its not such a bad deal. I do not know what your 40 to 1 comment is even about.

11:46 Painesville should be asking for grants that benefit more for the residents of ALL it's citizens. Not the ones on two blocks of Main St. Roads in town are bad. sewers are bad but we want to spend a million bucks on two city blocks. No matter what you do you will never ever get a return on investment. Parlay more like a waste of slim funds.
10:40 Willoughby did this kind of improvement to it's downtown? The 1 The first thing Willoughby Mayor Anderson was bring businesses to his downtown, not tear up streets and paint crosswalks red. You ask him I already have.
Why because it's a nice project like so many in our past the will produce very little fruit. No one want's to be more wrong then me. Problem is I have seen this all done before and it always ends in failure.
Wish I coulsd drink the kool-Aid.

If you really asked him he would have told you that they put 1 million dollars into their downtown streetscape [2 blocks] before they went after the business. If you do not believe me do a fact check.
You are on the wrong side of the arguement. How our Downtown looks reflects what we think of ourselves as a community. It is the first thing visitors see, first impressions are the lasting one. The small projects you mock have made the downtown look better. If you do not like these small improvements maybe you should have been getting your hands dirty planting flowers instead of complaining so you could appreciate all the volunteer work done trying to make this a better place for you to live.

He told us at a meeting getting businesses was job 1? Getting some one in the old Telephone building as well as the power plant and garage for the streetcars.
It's the first thing visitors see? What they learn about later about the smoke and mirror's.
The first thing I care about are the people who live here not on a false first impression.
Again the first rule, Return on investment.
Red crosswalks? That's one first impression. Many still laugh about that one. I see enough flowers in a season.

Kasich's tax plan includes cutting the income tax rate by 20 percent over three years and the small business tax by 50 percent. Again they strike at the middle class. Rich people will not be affected, except with lower income taxes, while the middle class will have to pay more for the few things that provide them with entertainment.

At February 19, 2013 at 1:59 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again the fact remains that Willoughby put 1 milion dollars into their street scape, and right now we have a twenty per cent return on our project that has not even started.
I think even you would take a twenty per cent return on our money. Again you are on the wrong side of this arguement.

As much as I want to see a nice downtown. I'm in agreement with Term. This project is mostly for a few business owners downtown and as a whole will not benefit the average Painesville resident.
When it is done it can then be evaluated as to it's worth.
This reminds me of the plug Shop Downtown Painesville. Really who are you trying to convince you or me?

At February 19, 2013 at 2:41 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

1:59 I don't believe your job is to convice me as much as people like 2:23?
I hope after all this with people driving on bad roads and sewers that don't work they will see your vision.
Lets go after grants that leave great first impressions instead of grants that will increase the quality of all Painesville residents.

While I can see both sides of this issue I have to ask, have any of you driven on East Erie St in the last few weeks? This, among other places, is a spot where money needs to be spent and work needs to be done. It is simply awful.

At February 20, 2013 at 5:39 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Jim, You have to wonder how many peoples first impression of Painesville is East Erie St.?

My suggestion is for you to move your family to Main St. and just drive those two blocks.

At February 20, 2013 at 9:36 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just so you know East Erie st is a state route, controled by ODOT.
Maybe Term does not want their money either, let blame the City.

Grants are generally earmarked for certain things. SO if a grant is received for the Main Street project they cannot use it to pave Elm street or any other street. They can not use it to put in new water lines or fix bridges.
Why doesnt the Mayor of Somewhere take a grant writing course to become educated? Then you can present reasonable ideas to the city. You could be the one to find the grants and help them out instead of constantly cranking about what gets done.

At February 20, 2013 at 12:21 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I agree 100% with you. SO please explain why so many real problems are ignored in the city for the beautification of two blocks of Main St.
Maybe start asking for the right grants would be a positive start?
Look the people here pretty much know the problems we have. I'm waiting for the backlash that will come when they see what $900,000 got them. Your argument isn't with me it will be next year with the public.
Many believe this will include improvements on Park Place and other areas of downtown.
No one has really expressed the size of this project that support this two block project. It's not as big as people think it is.

Guys (or gals), I am not stupid. I knew of what you write before I wrote about E Erie St. Go back and read it again. Do you see anywhere I referenced the money to be spent on Main St?? I simple said "money".

I simply agree with Term in that we have bigger issues than making two blocks look pretty while the rest of City just muddles along.

My point would be that if ODOT, or anyone else, is responsible for E Erie St, it is time to put their feet to the fire and get it fixed. Cold patch is not a fix.

Is that clear enough for you?

Jim, They get it they just don't want to admit to it. How else to justify this expense?

I just pulled Elm at random. Dont know any connection to ODOT or whatever that conversation is about. So make that random street any other street not involved with an ODOT situation.I don't feel the problems are ignored there is no money and no one will vote because of the catch-22 mentality you spread around to them. Will you back hiring a grant writer to do this all day? Didn't think so. SO who should be doing it? Again, you seem to have a lot of time perhaps you could give it a go. No? I didn't think so either.

What was recently put on the ballot and voted down? Was it a road levy? If so, there is your answer to the Erie St. and any other chuck-hole ridden road in this town. Cedarbrook, near the preschool is a tank trap. But to everyone who voted it down and those on this site that endorsed NOT voting for it - you got exactly what you wanted QUIT complaining and buy a tank to get around.

I can not believe the number of you people still living in the past. Downtown went downhill years and years ago. How many city managers ago? Yet you still harp in the past. If you wanna help, get into the future before we are only seeing and reading Spanish.

6:02 So you believe they don't have enough money? How big a loss in city income tax at CORE cost us? Plus the Bill's they left behind. I wouldn't give this bunch another dime. 76% will be spent on employee wages.

Revive downtown? Look we built 5 state of the art schools. Notice everyone trying to enroll their children there?

Beauty is only skin deep.

Do you think there is money? You cant constantly gripe about what monies were lost and think this city still has money. You cant (yet you still do)gripe about the roads, water, crime and yet not only not vote for a levy, you down right make such a to-do against it then crab when nothing can get done. You make absolutely no sense at all with the comment.

If the money was spent right you would not hear one complaint from me.
Giving this bunch more money is a waste of money and time.
Ask the business owner on Chestnut St. with two feet of sewage in his basement Monday what he thinks of the city's engineering.
This group has proven over and over they can't handle money. Sorry.

Sorry, you'd still complain. You make it your business to be negative with all that happens.

5:45 I have spent over 50 years trying to keep a positive attitude when it came to everything Painesville.
I can no longer bury my head in the sand and pretend the city is being run properly. If you can that's fine with me.

When all you have to offer is lip-service, sorry I do not feel what you do is considered a service to the community. You have made it clear you DO NOT want to do anything but talk by your refusal to run for an office or committees to benefit the city. Least Ms. Miller took a step a committee.

At March 3, 2013 at 11:40 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

8:57 lip-service or facts?
What you might feel as a service to the community, just isn't mine.
With the present people in charge it would be a waste. DO NOT want to be part of the problem.
I congratulate Ms. Miller. Let's wait to hear when it's all said and done what she thinks. Your right about one thing on this I hope I'm wrong.

What we don't need is more sheep.

Lip service, yes. All talk no action. What have you done? What changes to this community have you made to improve it? You can not make a change just by talking. You have to walk the walk not just talk the talk. Talking is the same as Lip Service.

At March 5, 2013 at 6:32 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

All talk no action. Tell me what action do you see? The whole point of this blog. is to show residents what a city budget of between 70 80 million gets them. See the old hospital site? All talk. See the Urgent care center? All talk. See the progress at the old Harvey site? All talk. See the Coe site All talk? See the old Hotel site? All talk.
See the grade improvement with new school buildings? All talk.
I seem to fit in.
Please get on of the things mentioned above and maybe we'll do something.
Seems all we do is talk?
