"SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER"

School's out for summer, but it appears our school board will ask for a new 6 mil. levy in August of this year. The board will meet Saturday morning to decide to go forward with a special election in August, or wait until the November elections.
A six mil. request will cost the average home owner in the Painesville School System approximately $210.00 more on a $100,000 home.
A special election will cost the schools between $6,000 to $10,000 to hold.
School board members even mentioned that even if the levy passes, sharp cuts will still have to be made.
Let your board representatives know how you feel about this levy, good or bad. It will help them with their decision Saturday.

Was not sure how to email you, but thought you would be interested in knowing the Court of Appeals had reversed the decision to give Mr. Herron jail time for the Steele Mansion. It seems the City and Municipal Court were too keen on prosecuting, colluding and did not follow proper legal procedure. I hope he is planning on suing the City for the weekend he spent in jail based on a fudge by the City Building Dept. and on an illegal judgement. I will offer to pay for the attorney just so the City stops being a bully!

I hope everyone really THINKS about this before they vote!
The only cuts that have happened so far have been to support staff. I did hear a rumor that all employees have been asked to take a 1% paycut but who knows. I doubt that administration will be victims of any "sharp cuts" should the levy not pass. You would think that someone making six figures could take a little more than 1% as a pay cut!
VOTE NO! The BOE NEEDS to be in a position where they really have to assess the situation instead of depending on the taxpayers to bail them out. Maybe if they are allowed to hit "rock bottom", they can come back better - or the state can just come in and take over. Look at the testing scores, graduation rates and that 50% policy! It's time for a change - it certainly can't get much worse!

Yes, I will write letters to each and every school board member and Dr. Hanlon.

This will get me to the street to protest, which I will not do for the illegal rallies. And yes, these two issues are very closely intertwined.

$210/YR?

Anyone else for starting a grassroots "NO" campaign?

As a footnote to my last comment, I will NEVER vote for a school levy as long as they graduate the low number of seniors, continue with the 50% system, and rank as low as they do in the county.

Anyone with me?

Term this is the entry on Lake Co. Clerk of Court regarding the whole Steel Mansion thing.

05/10/2010 OPINION FILED: JOURNAL ENTRY FILED: Judgment of trial court is AFFIRMED IN PART, REVERSED IN PART, VACATING ONLY JAIL SENTENCE. COSTS AGAINST PARTIES EQUALLY. vol 78 page 579-593 SERVICED UNDER 2009-L-119

They did vacate the jail time however the rest of the judgment stands. To 1:45 unless you are the city and the owner no one really know what happened and why and the only fact is the great old masion does not have hope and will be torn down and thats the real shame

I challenge all of you who put down our schools to volunteer to help and actually work with the children, I think you will change your minds pretty quickly about the quality of the education they get.

Adam, yes!

But I watched a parent and a guy who should be on the school board defeated last fall. I still can't figure that one out! Even teachers I talked to were behind Steve. So who the hell was or is voting?

are the Hada's and Hanlon's so entrenched in this community, the community can no longer see the light?

Fed up and ready to rally.

Adam, If you have real reasons to start a "no" campaign you should start one. If you feel the administration hasn't cut in certain area's or you are fedup waiting for the test scores to turn around. Along with the 50% grading system, graduation rates. Let people know where they can meet to let your voices heard. The school board will have a committee with contributions to get this levy passed. An August election is costly along with being a "stealth campaign in my view.
Maybe a group could get together a point out saving to the system they haven't thought about. The administration will take a
$200,000+ cut due to retirement and not replacing officals.
Painesville expects to lose over 10% of its state funding in 2012.
This blog. will be open to both sides of this issue.
In the mean time call a board member and let your position be known, Remember they live in the same economy as you do.

Save money? Where is it written that the school board must run a transportation department and or a janitorial department?
Madison Schools privatized its bus transportation and saved over a million dollars a year. To some of you who may not know Hal Werner is now the head of the Painesville schools unclassified employees union. God help them. Have Hal show you in the Constitution he carrys around where it says I have to provide him with a sweet job and a PERS retirement on my dime?

At May 12, 2010 at 11:28 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, Adam, I'm with you. As long as this 50% sham of a grading system exists, I will not vote for one more levy.

To 5:55: Yeah, Hal Werner as the head of anything is a scary proposition. What were they thinking? Didn't anyone else want the job?

-NEGATIVES
-Cellar champs for the worst test scores in the county. About equal with Euclid with the lowest in Cuyahoga Co.
-Poor graduation rate.
-Allowing illegal immigrants to enroll. Why does my child need a birth certificate to show proof?
-HHS principal and w/her 50%.
-Treasurer made error w/budget, decimal placement? Sure
-Placed tax levy on ballot to build new schools w/o a plan & informing voters of all the details. Build first ask questions later. Thats a shame on the voters too.
-Cutting only support staff w/more cuts to come. Reason: Teachers Teach, not the staff. Meaning the sole reason for a school is the teacher and no one else.
-Not even a mention of cutting sports and extra curricular to save jobs. Cut the pork first.
-Administration only one SO FAR to take the 1% cut. Riverside started this 1% now everyone jumped on the band wagon too. Think BOE can afford more than 1% to help out. Thats a drop in the bucket to them.
-Refresh my memory. Were the residents told by building NEW schools, that was supposed to be saving the taxpayers money in the future? Now look, high school is finished and open and now they need MORE money and will be over 3million dollars in debt in by 2013.
-Amount of taxpayer dollars to "help" ESL. Why not make speaking English a requirement prior to kingergarten? Cha-Ching
-Stop free LUNCH and BREAKFAST. It isn't appreciated, wasteful. Lots of cash spent on extras at the snack bar, but no money for a meal?
What the heck is happening?
Heaven help Madison schools. Hope they know what they've gotten in to.

No where in the constitution does it say anyone should be provided a job Brian. But many people have been working for years and earning pensions with no bearing to you.

The BOE has told us what they want.
Did any of them ask what the public might want?
I and everyone in the organization I work for took a 10% cut. Can't do that here?
Freeze the "steps" if the public knew how that little dilly worked. Let them get up and explain why I should throw more good money after bad for the scores we get.

VOTE NO! The support staff employees that are not state required (non-special education) will CONTINUE to be cut whether or not a levy passes. When there is no more support staff to cut, they'll start with the teachers.
The high earners in administration NEED to take a larger CUT! They are the ones making the highest dollar amounts. They can say how they have re-allocated job duties, not replaced retired positions - blah, blah, blah.
The schools are a waistband and the BOE is a big "muffin top" spilling over the sides. A "no" vote will force them to take off that belly shirt and cut out the excess fat!

The free breakfast and lunch are very wasteful and unfortunately mandated by the federal government.
The schools get money and handouts for the numbers they feed. My guess, the administration doesn't want to turn down a "free" handout from anybody.

What would I vote for?

An ELS school for Spanish speaking students; or any language other than English.
If you cannot speak the English language you should not be mainstreamed.
If you pass English and you have legal status, welcome to the Painesville City School System.

I would like to see this as an experiment for 2 years and see where our test scores are. What have we got to loose? We can't get much lower.

This is not profiling, it is smart education. What do you think Hudson schools is up to these days?

I understand the comment and I understand the legalities but since the state of Ohio AND the federal government is sooo far in debt, they should rethink all of these programs they continually fund then maybe someday when our great-great grandchildren come along this country may be headed to the black instead of being in the red.
It's not like the feds have more money than they know what to do with, they just think they do. STOP THIS SPENDING

The free meals are going to every child in the system, despite financial need. Families that can easily afford to feed their children are enjoying the free ride. I don't like my money being wasted like that.

could not agree with you more but I wonder how many know this is federally mandated?

Somewhere this has to stop. If you truly need the lunch or breakfast fine but really the word "need" should be a scrutinized a bit closer.

and have you seen what your kids are eating in these "free" programs? But not to worry because the government has subsidized the corn, soy, beef, pork, chicken and wheat industry so our kids can have a free meal or a 99 cent hamburger and fries; on the taxpayer.

Gosh, do I sound jaded or what?

Nothing is free and somebody has to pay the bills. Unfortunately the next generation is going to bailing out the Titanic long into their retirement and we are long gone.

This leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Can we pass a levy to buy a stone from India and roll it across the school board buildings front door?

At May 13, 2010 at 7:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't agree with cutting free meals in Painesville City schools because 3 out of 4 children are considered to be 'economically disadvantaged'...a polite phrase but one that can't be ignored. This is often the only nutritious meal these kids get...especially the elementary and middle school children. If anyone would like to verify that number you can find it on the Ohio Department Board of Education's web site. I am more interested in the meager 1% administration cut....a token sacrifice while others are losing their jobs entirely..meaning 100%. The insult to my intelligence will not be forgotten come voting time.

Why not take the stones from above the front doors of the old Harvey High and do that, I can't beleve they did not save them, what a joke, just like all of the stuff they left in the building that they could have used.

one out of 3 children in Painesville may be economically disadvantaged, but their families receive substantial aid in food stamps. I have seen how much these families are allotted and I could feed my family very well, if not excessive, on this amount.

At May 14, 2010 at 1:45 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

To 1:05...it's 3 (three) out of 4 (four) or 75% of kids are economically disadvantaged.,,,not 1 out of 3... It's not the childrens' fault that their parents don't know how to shop or spend their food stamps in other ways that don't help their kids.

Does this breakfast and lunch program cost the city residents directly?
Also when schools are out for the summer or snow days do these children go without eating?
I believe they offer these programs to everyone as to not point out disadvantaged students, is this true?

You would think that a superintendent of any school district would be required to be a resident of that district - wouldn't that make them more aware of what is happening with the students if he/she lived among them? How can an administrator ask for residential support for any school levy that they themselves cannot even vote for? What's up with that?

At May 19, 2010 at 7:30 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

He's not the only one out of touch; apparently some principals and teachers are guilty as well. I just had a long conversation with a Harvey senior a couple of days ago. She was very articulate when asked about school. Her take on things was that the biggest problem at the high school was apathy (on the parts of everyone, students, teachers, administration) and a lack of respect for authority. She also told me that, yes, the pledge of alligence is being said over the PA system every day but is totally ignored by everyone. How sad. This young lady is not an outstanding student nor does she participate in a lot of extra-curricular activities but she is graduating and going on to college. I admit that one conversation with just one student is very subjective, but how many of you that do not have kids in school have actually talked to a student and asked their opinion? She didn't have any solutions, she just wants out and as far away as she can get. Mr. Hanlon, your school system has big problems and throwing more money at them is just not going to work.
