"GET BACK" beatles
Loved the 50th year tribute to the Beatles that aired Sunday night. Made me feel old and young at the same time. I hope many of you enjoyed it also.
GET BACK to Painesville, somehow I let some of you get me to stray into political places I would rather ignore. I guess when I hear some facts from "Informed" voters that are wrong it draws me in like a moth to a light. I did the last post so some of these people have a post to vent on, I have a bet I won't comment on anything posted on HAD ENOUGH bet I'll loss that bet!
Now for some Painesville news.
First the Harvey High Marching Band will be traveling at the end of March to Disney world to lead the March of Characters down Main St. This is the first time Harvey has ever lead this parade. The band members have funded the trip on there own. No taxpayer money will be used and there will be one Chaperon for every six band members. Harvey Band represent!
Mr.David Bull and Dr. Joshua Englehart gave a presentation on the new state rule on passing a student from the third grade to the fourth using reading proficiency. Presently only 39% of our third graders have passed the test with a score of 392 or above, challenges to get everyone to a fourth grade level include special tutoring, and summer school. I believe if they are proficient in other subject they will move to the fourth grade but must pass the third grade reading test to be truly fourth graders. At the same time they will be exposed to fourth grade reading. All this seems simple now but don't forget that along with them we will have a new group of third graders next year.
The school board passed five calamity days, so far this year and waiting on legislation from Columbus on if funding will be available to expand the school year. Next school year PCLS will change the system from days to hours giving them more flexability.
I questioned the board if Painesville Schools participated in the "Blizzard Bag" program. I was told the district had to do that in the spring of last year and didn't. They are looking to do it in the 2014/2015 school year.
Painesville City had a large segment on Fox 8 news Sunday and Monday morning with concerns to our snow ban legislation. It would be nice if council could pass something on this soon. Remember council will review this legislation two more times. Please let council know how you feel on this matter.

Maybe I am really dense but I am not clear on how changing from "days" to "hours" for missed school will make a difference overall?
They currently start a school day on a two hour delay so as to not miss a day of education. However the reality is that no real learning takes place on those days anyway. After all, how much will a student absorb in a 20 or 25 minute class?
I would "guess" that the hours required will be something like 1080 hours (180 days x 6 hours per day) for the year? Does this mean that there is really no reason to need for "snow" days then since the hours (not days) can be made up at any time?
IOW, instead of a 6 hour (or whatever) long school day, if time is missed can it can be made up by attending three 8 hour days to make up for a missed 6 hour day?
I hope I am asking something that can be understood. It seems more like a shell game to me. IOW, guess where we are hiding the days off from school.
BTW,isn't the most important item, which the State House seems to overlook, the education of the children? How will this be accomplish by more time off?

The new system change from days to hours will be explained at the next board meeting. The present 6.25 school day will be discussed as we change to hours.

I'm a Democrat, but saying that the Republicans want to suppress the vote just because they want people to have I.D.is ridiculous. Start a campaign informing voters that they need it, give them plenty of time to get it, and I'm sure that there will be plenty of groups available to help everyone. If you are too dumb to get an I.D., once you are given plenty of notice and directions how to accomplish that, then you are probably not smart enough to vote. Put another way, if you are smart enough to be able to figure out how to vote, then you must be smart enough to get an I.D. Especially with a country full of illegals, I don't understand who could argue with having people have I.D. It only takes one vote to sway an election sometimes, and there is nothing more important in our country than voting.

Good grief! There's plenty of time to vote. Do you remember the days when we had 1 day to vote? Do you? Well, I do. How long do you wnt to give people? A year? If they are unable to vote at the poles in 1 day or vote by absentee for the few weeks before, then they don't deserve to vote. That's plenty of time. And I'm not a Republican trying to suppress the vote. I'm an independent who is tired of stupidity and crying foul when things don't go your way.

The state auditor confirmed a total of 17? Over 5,580,822 votes cast do the math. Romney lost the state of Ohio by 166,214 votes to Obama. Can't blame the loss on anything but a poor candidate.

Usually there is a screening before kindergarten. Most babes now days must know their alphabet, colors, numbers and be toilet trained. Why does this not apply to the Mexicans? I ask you? Why?

Just to clarify, it is the state switching every district to hours not days. Most NE Ohio districts are way over the minimum hours needed for a school year, so they could have many, many snow days and be ok because they have enough hours.
6:19- it is against ohio law to not accept a student if they fail the kindergarten screening. Something new I found out this year, if a child is not potty trained we must accept them and potty train them ourselves. Currently doing that!

Now, photo ID.
In Lake County you only need proof of where you live. I repeat, where you live. A photo ID makes it much easier at the polls because it has your address on it. You can still vote a paper ballot with just a utility bill with your name and address on it. That goes to BOE to have signature checked before it is counted. As someone else said, proper identification is needed many places. If you can't remember or can't get an ID of some sort, how do we know our elections are valid.
By the way, a passport has your picture but is NOT a valid ID to vote. WHY, No address is listed.

As stated in the example above, 180 days x 6 hours per day equals 1080 hours. Even if 5 snow days (30 hours) were taken away, you would still have to be in school for 1050 hours, right?

Sorry not a Dem or Republican. Don't believe I have come out on either party. You might be surprised but before the tea party took the Republicans hostage I kind of liked the GOP as they generally wanted government out our lives and business. On occasion a Democrat entered the race and they had a pretty good track record.

Today I vote for environmental issues and women's rights. Beyond that I'm not too passionate about anything. If someone in the GOP can support those issues they have my vote. the mimimum hours needed for elementary school is 960 hours. You do the math. 180 days at 6.5 hours a day is more than the minimum required.
