"SECOND CHANCE" 38special

Heard something interesting yesterday dealing with our schools.
Seem all the hierarchy of the Painesville City School System including our soon to be leaving Superintendent  were all involved in a custodian problem at one of the Elementary schools. Seems this custodian has two options move to Cedarbrook or Chestnut St. School both onto a different shift?
So I'm to guess this doesn't include a morals issue or the fact that this person couldn't preform their job?
That is if the administration is willing to "move" them.

With all the issues facing our schools an impending levy. Our schools now in academic emergency can someone please just explain why this is such an important issue?

I guess my real interest here is to just see the strength and resolve of the union that represents these people. In the past many have argued their union as well as their representatives are worthless.
I want to find out.

Why is that custodial services are not contracted out ?

Why do broom pushers and toilet scrubbers need a union and pension from the taxpayers ?

Are you really that naive? You are going to pay for the services (because they have to be done) whether it is directly or indirectly. The costs don't go away.

You look down your nose that the people who perform these functions? Please tell us why that is the case?

BTW, what is wrong with having representation?

I don't know the details but I would be willing to wager that you don't either. Why not let the situation play out before you start Union bashing?

Point being ..

Get rid of them and contract custodial services out for 1/3 the cost.

No more pensions, no more health insurance costs inflicted on the taxpayers.

To the knucklehead who thinks custodians are just broom pushers, you are wrong. I happpen to know the person and they have done a lot as a custodian for Painesville City School's teachers and students by keeping their bulding clean and saving them money by fixing and maintaining a lot of areas in the building. At times they have spent their own money.

Taxpayers in Painesville City, Many African American employees have been and are being forced out of the Painesville City Schools. Don't continue to let this happen. This is blatant racism. They have a right to work in our schools just like the Hispanics and Whites. Besides the custodian, they are trying to force out another employee in an administrative position, also. As taxpayers, you have passed levies and paid higher taxes for these schools to be here. You have a voice and if ever they need you to speak up the time is NOW!

3:06 The good old days when unions gave us many of the pay and employee rights we have now. Let's go back to the time before child labor laws? Unions were the good old days. Now some suggest benefits should not be included? Even a private firm would have to include some benefit package.
To all school union employees where is/ your support for unions representing private businesses, or is PERS your only concern?
Look today they have come up with a new system to get free labor it's called internship. Tell a family that after spends close to $100,000 to educate their child now they must serve free a free internship. crazy.
To 5:35 I will mention that WEWS5 news did a story on 4 Ohio council people sending a letter to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine with concerns of AMP-OHIO? One from Painesville. I wonder who the Flock that was? See the story on channel 5's web site. I didn't post your comment, presently it's a little premature.

As soon as business breaks the back of auto unions, steel, mine, telecommunication, Teamsters along with what's left in the others they will then focus on Public Unions. Teachers, Custodians believe it you are in their cross-hairs and soon you will be out there all alone. With no one to blame but you. Look at your vehicles how many were made in a foreign or american non-union factory. You are your biggest enemies. Shop at Marc's soon you might be working there at minimum wages.
Educators soon many of you will be working at a charter school.
The levy signs mention not a raise in taxes? The one last year didn't mention that because it was an INCREASE. Now lets put up signs for a decrease in taxes?
If 80% of the levy goes to staff wages and benefits, What's with this "for the children" I guess they believe we are stupid? Maybe we are. Teachers want a raise knock on peoples doors explaining why you need more than $70,000 to work 185 days a year. Make a case for yourself.

Who knew that is what their jobs are for ?

Why do you think every single office building hires contractors to do this same thing and don't have people on their payrolls to do it ? Because it's 1/3 the costs to contract it out.

This thread is too funny.

Galion just had two custodians, both arrested for pornography charges on school grounds .. union kept them on the payroll for months until they resigned with their benefits intact.

They Galion school system is looking down the barrel at state fiscal emergency and they refuse to consider outsourcing the nightly cleaning even though it would cost just 25% of what the school union charges.

Take a wild guess of what Galion voters are going to do with their 10 mil levy request in 5 weeks.

8:17 as a teacher in the district, most of the money does go to salary and benefits. Schools are not set up to make a profit, like the private sector. Additionally, if you buy something that is broken or defective, you just go to the store and exchange it. Not too easy when it is a child. Also, I don't think I need more than 70,000 dollars per year, and neither do most of the people I do work with. I can tell what we do want....more parental involvement across the board. We have a good deal of great parents that support their children and the staff, but we also have a large segment that gives absolutely zero support...which makes everyone's job a little harder. I thank those parents that stay concerned each time I see, call, or email them.

Also, 12:21, the majority of the custodians are great, hardworking people who care about the kids. There are things that they have to endure as well, so to paint them all as "broom pushers" is a little too simplistic. They do so much more than that. It just shows that maybe you haven't been in a school in a while...it's really not all you hear on the street....

Hey 8:17...

As a teacher in the district, you might not want to talk too loudly about the 185 days.....about a year and a half ago, the district put out a proposal to go year-round school, at least in one school as a pilot project.... Enough staff members agreed to move the proposal forward, and guess where it got shot down....that's right..the parent committee. The parents did not feel it was warranted. Some thought about problems with vacations, child care , and other issues related to a new and different calendar. We did not make the calendar for school. It was built on a farming schedule from 100 years ago. We tried to change it, but the parents of this community voted it down( which I can respect).

I know you don't want to hear about all of the extra time and money we spend outside of class, I can tell you probably don't believe it. I would encourage you to sit and talk with a few PCLS teachers at all levels, to see the challenges they face, both inside and outside of classroom. There are things we do every day "for the children" that we ask nothing for each and every day. It's not as easy as I think you expect it is. There are barriers, regulations, and paperwork that I know you have not even considered. Then, feel free to join us if you are so inclined- That's the beauty of America, you can do just about any job you want if you put your mind to it, and get the proper training....

4:56 I don't have much knowledge of year round school. I do believe the student would only still spend 180 days in class. It was proposed for only one school in the district. Maybe some could enlighten us?
4:30 You are correct schools may not me setup for profit. The people paying the freight should expect a positive result.
Your answer of more parental involvement is right on the mark. Soon you will hear how giving teachers a raise might accomplish this?
4:27 Apples & Oranges I don't see this as a moral's case. If it was why move them to a new location?
3:02 out-sourcing is new to our labor pool. Lake Erie College out-sources many jobs PCLS does inhouse. They even contract with the city schools on some bus transportation in the past.

Teachers will probably be making less... In the new Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) 50% of the teacher's evaluation comes from performance of the student...sounds good in theory, right? Easier for teachers in Riverside, Madison, Mentor...where a majority of the parents care and are involved...harder in districts like Painesville, Cleveland, Warrensville, and Garfield Heighs...where it is a challenge. What might happen is good teachers might leave our district because they can't get students to perform through no fault of trying any number of interventions....once again...tough with little widespread parental involvement/support...

10:13... A few things..

I didn't call them inferior teachers...the state may...and they don't even know all the particulars....I for one, don't want to leave, and won't.....I enjoy working here...and I know many people are leaving....I don't think Dan wanted a new challenge, he might have perceived a better opportunity in Bay...also, don't think that all teachers agree with what's going on in Strongsville just because we are teachers....

When you say "pay more for an inferior teacher"', there are a couple of things with that statement...first, they are many reasons they could be inferior, and not all of them can be attributed to the teacher. Apathy and intrinsic motivation are non existent in many students and we have tried many many different strategies and methods to instill this in students, but when it is not reinforced at home, you are losing the battle. This is something that Riverside, Mentor, and Madison have ahead of us...they are expected to do better (for the most part), and it is reinforced at home. All of the staff works very hard each day to raise student achievement, but we need the parents to buy in as well. Some do, but not nearly enough, and usually not the ones who we really need. I'm not really sure about being careful what I wish for...I want our students to be proficient on the state test and have them held to the same discipline standards as districts around us. I bet if we could get a leader that would adhere to that, scores might improve. .

@957...

My point is that when even the idea was floated, it was shot down by the parents...I get that it was only one school, but it still never made past discussions, due to the parents ( and not just the ones that have students in 2 different grades...a valid point). Also, we did not make the 180 day calendar-it's not like we negotiated it. I would encourage you to talk to your legislators to change it. While you doing it, ask them why school funding has been ruled unconstitutional at least 4X by the Ohio Supreme Court, and yet they still use it even though it is unconstitutional.

I for one, feel that districts like ours need to be in school more, as our students struggle academically. I am comfortable taking the same salary for more days worked. I actually got into this because I wanted to give back to where I am from. I won't be going away just because our students struggle. That's why they need to see people that in it for the long haul.....they notice, and they can tell in a minute if you are not genuine....

There are many many parts to the problems that are being faced in the PCLS District. Although we have many GREAT teachers, we also have a number of teachers that are not able (even though they have their teaching degrees) to teach the students in our system. We have had a teacher this year ask a set of grandparents (both retired teachers) to stop working with their grandchild as he was too far ahead of his other classmates. When this couple has offered to help in the classroom they were denied. We also had almost 1/2 of all the incoming kindergarten children this year come to school in the Fall not ready for learning. The numbers were as follows: 125 of the kindergarten students that came to school this Fall were not ready- of the 125, 75of the 125 were Hispanic. We have one of the lowest KRAL scores in the whole State(meaning the kindergarten children that took this test in Sept. 2012 were not ready to be in school). We have many large classrooms in the early years with a high percentage of the children not ready for learning at the grade level they are in. We have elementary schools with very high percentage of special ed students which need a more intense and appropriated form of education by trained staff. If you look at the test scores for the whole district you will see that the students are passing the tests at the high school level. Recently when I asked an ELL teacher about this fact I was told that it takes 7-10 YEARS for the Hispanic population of children entering our schools to be able to succeed in our form of schooling. Programs have been proposed by staff to address this problem and the administration have denied these programs. We have math classes in the upper elementary classroom that don't have support information for the children to use at home with homework. I ended up purchasing math support books at Barnes and Noble and Scholastic for my own children just so we could complete assigned homework papers correctly. We have teachers that have refused to use technology to inform parents of the daily happenings in their classrooms. In our neighboring school districts this techique is part the teachers job. When we asked to have this in PCLS we were told that the teachers are doing all that is expected of them by Dr. Hanlon. We have to look at the job of education differently in PCLS! If we have to "out source" jobs so that we have money to run a school system where our children are achieving, then we have to do this! These employees affected by "out-sourcing" are often hired by those companies providing the services! I did not say give raises to the teachers, I am saying this money we would save should be used to provide the form of education where our children will succeed and learn. We also need to have teaching styles that are successful for the type of students we have in ALL our schools. Running a modified middle school program in the elementary school is not productive for the majority of our students. Elementary teachers that now are responsible for over 100 children in their subject area are not providing the personal touch so needed by OUR children. So as I end, I can only say our problems are many and we need new administration that can find a way to get the students in PCLS to succeed!

Just remember, no matter how hard you work, how many years you put in, and how productive you are...if there is a person in a third world country they can exploit to save $.50 a day in the short term, the "job creators" will un-create your job so they can create it in another country for a little less.

Exactly! We have educate differently and it has to be creative. This administration has/had no idea what to do with the current student population. There are schools with our same problems who have turned the status quo around. I have seen it and when talking to this administration I walked away thinking we will never move forward. I predict Dr. Hanlon will do quite well in Chardon he and his cadre had were flummoxed here.

9:29 and 5:58: Thank you so much for this information. THIS is the kind of real, honest and comprehensive information that the citizens of Painesville need, and it is obviously coming from people who actually know what they are talking about and who actually care. Again, wonderful information. Thank you. You two are the kind of people that everyone needs to be listening to. You not only seem to have a grasp on the whole of the problems in our schools, but also some possible solutions.

This is slightly off-subject, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when money is siphoned from the public schools and put into charter, etc. schools. There is no reason, in my opinion, that those schools should be able to be any more excellent than the public schools. By that I mean that if a charter school can be excellent, then the public schools should be able to be excellent, too. Therefore, the goal would be not to have children going to other schools as a way to get an excellent education, but having the excellent education available in the public schools.

Maybe a meeting should be held with the two of you offering your thoughts, along with any other like-minded colleagues, as a way to start the changes that you speak of. You two have obviously defined and understand the problems and already have solid ideas on how to fix them. I feel like I just heard running water in the middle of the desert.

A charter school can be excellent much more easily because they have the ultimate trump card ....they can return problem or underperforming students back to their original public schools. Imagine if PCLS could return problem students to their "home" district like Lake Catholic does (if there was one in theory)....PCLS has nowhere to send these students, and therefore must educate all students...

Look your a responsible parent you want the best education for your children. Your willing to work with them as well as the teacher. Knowing this you know there are problem children in your child's class. Maybe bullies, disruptive, have emotional problems, can't keep up over language skills someone mentioned 7 years to be sucessful in our schools. Now who is this affecting your child's education.
In the last report on asset available funds goes not to students that excell but to those behind.
Sorry I'm one tired hearing about race, economics in this same situation any caring parent would send their child to the best school for them city, charter, Catholic what works best.
No student should have to be sent where everyone must go.
As the new buildings were being built, how odd it was in the worst preforming district in the county the one parish school closed? How fast the old school's were torn down as to not let a charter school get leg up.
I sadly disagree the problem isn't charter school the problem is the public schools.

Actually, in theory it should be easier in a district like Painesville. The 50% you are referring to is not about student performance, but about student growth. So if PCLS kids come in low, they just have to make growth. That seems much easier than trying to grow the kids who are already performing well.

7-10 YEARS for the Hispanic population of children entering our schools to be able to succeed in our form of schooling? That is absurd. Why is it the migrants are allowed to remove their children from school learning and take them to Mexico for anywhere from 2-6 weeks during the school year? If they only took their breaks when the rest of the students did maybe this would cut down the 7-10 year learning disability. Give them the homework to do while gone? Do they do it? Have heard many said NO, and have not done what is asked. Going away for so long, parents don't care, kids don't care. This need to stop, it's the elephant in the room no one wants to address.

Then expect them to pick up where they left off without missing a beat. If I had to remove them I'd make bloody sure they had all their homework with them and it was complete upon return. I feel by the Mexican vacations, it's very unfair to our report card. It needs to stop. Either you want your kids to get an education or you don't. This goes along with them not wanting to assimilate as Americans. Are their schools a free-for-all? Just come and go as they please without consequence?

Even if there was school year round they would still flock to Mexico for weeks at a time. Year round wouldn't fix anything, they need to be in school and stay in school like the others do. Take your vacation in the winter, spring and summer. They take these plus extra time and this is time away from learning which leads me to believe they and their parents think very little about their education. Apparently there isn't a need to have an education if you want to work the fields for the rest of your life. Or work at McDonalds translating orders for customers.

The real problem with the Mexicans is why are these people in our country and not their own? Why are we educating their children, and why isn't Mexico? It's absurd. It's not our problem. They have their own countries, and there is no reason for them to be in ours. We can't go squat in Mexico, so why can they do it here - by the millions? The little value they put on education shows in their whole country, and now it is showing in ours. Just wait; we haven't seen anything yet. We are a stupid country.

They don't care about the laws of our country or the welfare of our country -- they just want to win elections, and they are willing to give away our country and all the money and jobs of hard-working Americans to do it. But what makes it just so stupid, is that in a few short years, these same politicians will no longer have jobs, because the Hispanics will have taken over all the elections, and Hispanics vote for Hispanics. Our country will be gone, and the Hispanics will have taken over. It's happening now already. That's about as smart as the fact that nobody has stood up to change the "anchor baby" nonsense yet. It's just all very scary and very stupid. The Hispanics and the rest of the illegals know how dumb we are. They say they are the smart ones. I used to dispute that, but I don't anymore. Looks like they win. The reason they keep going back to Mexico is because that's their country, and that's where they belong. They just come here for the free stuff and to take over the country. Soon all their billions of relatives will be here, too, so they won't have to make so many trips back home.

They should come here on one or two year passes only, and there should be no path to citizenship. No babies born while they are here are Americans unless one of the child's parents is an American.

The other thing that needs immediate attention is the anchor baby problem. Whatever needs to be fixed to change that needs to be fixed quickly.

We need to get the e-verify program up and running so if you are not legally working here, you do not work here. The illegals who are not able to work here will go home...that's right...home...where they belong. They found their way in, and they can certainly find their way out.

Border security needs to continue to tighten and get better as quickly as that can happen.

Once all those things are in place, and only then, should the rest of our immigration be looked at to see what we need once Americans have first dibs at their own jobs again.

First things first, and if both of the (ridiculous) political parties get on board, it can be done pretty quickly, and we will not have to give away our country so the Republicans can keep up with the Democrats when it comes to giving away our country with both fists.

Here's a little note about El Salvator: El Salvator officials says their country would be destabilized if their 200,000 people were made to return to their own country. They say the demographic pressure on employment, resources, social services and housing would be disastrous...and it would upset Latino voters here.

Oh, reaaallly.

The worst part of all of this giving away of our country to whatever illegal wants to come here is that Americans are sitting on their butts and letting it happen. If Americans wanted to stop it, they could.

There has to be a way to solve the educational crisis that we are facing in Painesville. This is a community concern and needs to have the attention of everyone including the members of City Council, churches, grandparents, parents, those that send their children to private schools as well as to the public schools, teachers and administration. What we are doing is not working for the majority of the children in Painesville as seen by our scores!!! If we are really spending $12,000 per student and we are getting the scores we are getting then something is very wrong!
We are not the only school system that is having to deal with ELL/ESL students! To be successful we need to have the right educational programs for our students. We also need to continue to challenge the students that come ready to learn but are assigned to classroom where you have half the children that are not educationally prepared. We need smaller class sizes in the early grades- why would anyone ever think that any teacher can educate small children packed in classrooms of 30 students with many of these students not ready for the material they are using! Why would we "water" down a middle school teaching style into 4th and 5th grade and then wonder why many of the students are finding this teaching style difficult? Where is the educational support materials- books, web sites, support materials- to use by parents with their children to complete homework correctly. One of my last questions happens to be -Why do we still have staff members that do not or will not use our school technology properly? I sat on a committee to create schools that would supply technology for our children to learn with and we built the schools to support this equipment. Again, $12,000 is being spent for WHAT!!!!!
My children have not received $12,000 worth of an education!
For an additional $6000 these children could attend Hawkins- take a look at all that is offered for $18,000 and then compare our offerings. We should be able to have at least 2/3 of the same course offerings and activities for the money PCLS is spending to educate our students. Something is VERY wrong!!!!

I, for one, am in agreement with you, 8:37. I cannot figure out why people keep advocating for more charter, etc. schools, which take money away from the public schools. I understand that some of these other schools are providing better educations, but the real question is why in the world aren't the public schools providing such excellent education that there is no need to go to the charter schools? If they can do it in one school, then it should be able to be reproduced in all the schools, and we know there are some kids out there getting superb educations, so....what's the problem? How many more decades is this going to go on?

I'll tell you the problem ....some kids and their parents...why does Solon and Orange and districts like that do well? Be they are EXPECTED to do well at home. Parent/parents support them and the school, and there is no discussion. That simply does not happen with some of our students and parents. We have a lot of great parents and students, but we have a segment who can not be bothered about education. Here is an interesting tidbit also....the Hispanic parents are some of the most involved and caring, even when their children may not be...I've seen it many times over the years I have teaching in PCLS....

7:52 I understand some of these schools are providing better educations.
My loyalties are to my children not the local school district, its administration or even teachers. If my children can receive a better education I will move heaven and earth to get it for them.

10:18, this is 7:52. You missed my point completely and therefore took my post out of context. I never said don't do what is right for your children. I am asking why aren't the public schools as excellent as any charter schools? Continuing to siphon money away for charter schools is not the answer. The ultimate answer is to make every public school excellent.

I know for a fact that suggestions have been made to Dr. Hanlon by the Ohio Dept. of Education as to how to improve our test scores and he won't implement them. He was told that our school is a diamond in the rough but the problem is our children are not ready for school when they enter kindergarten. Hanlon was told to not depend on HeadStart to prepare our children for school. We need a Preschool with certified teachers to prepare our kids. Also, he was told to HOLD BACK KIDS in the early grades. We are not going to damage anyone's self esteem by retaining a child in 1st or 2nd grade. What really cripples a kid is letting them move on when they clearly have not mastered the skills needed to move on. They go through the rest of their educational career not performing at the same level as their peers. Talk about a self esteem crusher. Why hasn't Hanlon listened? Personally, I believe he doesn't care about our POOR DIVERSE student population. He blames our low scores on everthing else but himself.

I don't know much about educating children, but what about some sort of summer school classes for the kids who weren't up to snuff in kindergarten, and try to work with them there to catch them up to their peers also? And every grade after that if it is still necessary? Or just have English classes for these kids every summer?

At April 13, 2013 at 6:00 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

We don't require summer school. This will blow your mind....Students at our middle school can fail 2 core subjects and still be passed to the next grade and they do not have to go to summer school. What is even more troubling is that they can fail the same two subjects every year and still be passed on. Now let me ask you. If a student fails Science in 6th, 7th and 8th grade, what chance do they have of passing their first Science class at the high school level? The really sad part is that the student has no concept of failing. They believe that they can continue to fail Science or any other subject and still be passed along.

6:00 You seem to know something about this. Now who's policy exactly is this? The BOE, the administration or someone elses?

This is 1:28. Wow, 6:00, this is the type of information that needs to be made public. It is shocking, as you said it would be. And this is the type of education that these kids and our country are expected to succeed on.

1:28 I will ask if the facts that 6:00 exposed are correct. If they are we may have opened Pandora's box. This makes the 50% policy appear to be child's play.

I can't believe an educator would do this?

At April 15, 2013 at 1:38 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

And speaking of the 50% policy, is anything being done to stop that?
